ODBC problem with SQLAnywhere

I have an application developed in PowerBuilder 6.0 general release and
being run on various flavors of Windows 95.

Some of my clients are complaining that they cannot connect to the
SQLAnywhere database. It fails with the following message:

DB Error Code: 999
DB Error Message: SQLSTATE =IM004
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager]Driver's SQLAllocHandle on
SQL_HANDLE_ENV failed

I am using Version 5.5.04 Build #1867 of SQLAnywhere.

The funny thing is that before I upgraded the application from PB 5.0.01 to
PB 6.0, no one had problems connecting to the database. The only thing that
is differrent is that I am using PBODB60.DLL instead of PBODB50.DLL. Also,
this problem does not happen to everyone. It seems to be hit or miss.
Unfortunately, all my clients are at remote sites, so I am unable to
physically examine the particulars of each system that is suffering from
this.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can solve this?

This is a fairly common problem stemming for multiple different releases of the
SQLAnywhere DLLs on the client machine. Check for the following files,
eliminate duplicates, and make sure they are all the same version/build:

wod50t.dll
dbl50t.dll
wl50ent.dll
dbeng50.exe (or rtdsk50.exe, if using runtime engine)

try adding the SQL Anywhere directory to the path entry of autoexec.bat

example:

set path=c:\sqlany50\win32;%path%

Thanks for the tip. I did a binary compare between the SQL Anywhere files
on a computer that does work with the files on a computer that does not
work, and there were no differences encountered. I verified that there were
not duplicate file names anywhere on the system. As I had indicated, my
distribution files have not changed except that I recompiled the app under
PB 6.0, whereas it was running PB 5.0.01 before. So, the only
database-related file that is different is PBODB50.dll vs. PBODB60.DLL.

I'll keep investigating this, but if you have any other suggestions, I'd
love to hear about them. Thanks again for the help.
