GPF's In PB DLL's

Hello,

I have posted already regarding a gpf we encounter in pbrte050.dll. We are
currently in the midst of researching several gpf's that are occuring in
different PowerBuilder dlls when running our application. We are using PB
5.0.03 (32 Bit) with SQL Anywhere 5.0.03 (build 884). The following are the
regularly reported gpfs we are seeing:

APP CAUSED AN INVALID PAGE FAULT IN MODULE PBRTF050.DLL @ 0137:10d01c9e

APP CAUSED AN INVALID PAGE FAULT IN MODULE PBDWE050.DLL @ 0137:115e6d2a
APP CAUSED AN INVALID PAGE FAULT IN MODULE PBDWE050.DLL @ 014F:115e6d2a
APP CAUSED AN INVALID PAGE FAULT IN MODULE PBDWE050.DLL @ 0137:115bf13d
APP CAUSED AN INVALID PAGE FAULT IN MODULE PBDWE050.DLL @ 0137:115cd66b
APP CAUSED AN INVALID PAGE FAULT IN MODULE PBDWE050.DLL @ 0137:115bf4e5

These have been very sporadic and difficult to recreate consistantly. I
have not been able to narrow down exactly what lines of code are being
executed when they occur. The gpf's in PBDWE050.DLL seem to involve
printing functions though. Our users most commonly are using HP 4, 4L, 5,
5L, 6 drivers.

I have found one instance where we create an instance of a nonvisual user
object on a window (created in the open event) and the object was not being
destroyed. What are the usual signals when this is the case (create without
destroy)? Are they gpf's, memory leaks, both? I tested the area of our
application where the destroy was missing against the win95 resource meter
and even though this object was not getting destroyed, I saw no memory leak
at all and, at least while I tested it, encountered no gpfs.

I have read in this newsgroup about different versions of PBRTE050.DLL.
That with PB 5.0.03, you get 2 of them. One dated 5/15/97 and one dated
5/16/97. I have read postings from TeamPS guys that stated that the one
dated 5/16/97 is the correct one. Is this true for 5.0.03 32 bit? We have
been distributing the one dated 5/15/97.

I am hoping that an educated guess can be made about what could be causing
these listed gpfs or how to research them further given the module and
memory address and other information I've presented.

This has become an extremely urgent issue for us, so any information would
be greatly apprecieated.

TIA,
Ted

Hi Ted,

Check the online infobase, located on the PS website, on these memory
locations / DLLs. Might give you extra information. As search criteria,
enter like this:
PBRTF050.DLL 0137 10d01c9e

Which .dll's can cause errors in PB .dll's

Upgrading to PB 7.03 DLL's --> Rebuild project generated DLL's???
We have several apps that are all built using windows machine code DLLs and were last compiled / rebuilt when first migrated to pb7. If I upgrade to pb7.03 and then install the latest build 10077 or whatever it is do I need to rebuild all the DLL's? I'm assuming yes and feel more comfortable doing it anyway but it is time consuming and always a risk putting out new DLL's on the network. I did think I read somewhere that one of the fixes or enhancements in 7.03 was faster network execution of DLL's. Is this true? thanks jack Jack, Although it sometimes...

DLL's obfuscated using DotFuscator when deployed don't work and the DLL's are easily decompiled. What to do?
I used DotFuscator Community edition that ships with VS2005 to obfuscate some of the DLL's from my PreCompiled website. When I deploy these obfuscated DLL's on the webserver, my site doesn't work. If I revert back to my old DLL's fo my precompiled website, it works fine. Secondly, the DLL's obfuscated with DotFuscator Community Edition are easily decompiled to the original source code using a decompiler like Salamander .NET decompiler (http://www.remotesoft.com/salamander/). Then, whats the use of this DotFuscator if it can't obfuscate the DLL's. Ple...

API's and dll's
Could anyone please shortly explain to me how API's and Dll's are used in ASP.NET I need to be able to access Windows API's to list all SQL servers on our network. If I want to use a dll to call and return this, do I have to write it in .NET, or will my old VB6 dll be good enough if I add it from the COM tab ? Can ASP.NEt talk to the Windows API's? If so, is is called from the client machine or the server - or can it call it from both ? Thanks. Graham I think, accessing Windows API directly is not possible. But there is a great solution: Write a COM-object in VB6 that...

PBD's OR DLL's
I have written an application and currently deploy this with an .exe and several pbd's. What is the difference between checking PBD in the application painter? -- Regards, John If you don't check the "PBD" option in the painter, then all referenced objects in that PBL get compiled into the .EXE file. This causes problems for dynamically referenced objects (many datawindows) unless you're very careful about your .PSR files. If you compile to PBD, then all of the objects in the PBL are there. Other than that, AFAIK, it's just a preference on...

Who's show is SN? Steve's or Leo's?
I don't want to start anything (honestly)! Just want to ask a simple question. Does the Security Now podcast belong to Steve Gibson or Leo Laporte? Maybe I'm in a world all to myself, but when I listen to the excellent SN podcasts, I want to hear STEVE, not Leo. But especially in the past few shows, it seems Leo will repeatedly interrupt Steve in the middle of a sentence that I want to hear the rest of. I consider this very rude of Leo. Steve is making a point that I (we) want to hear, then looses his train of thought after Leo barges in and asks something. It...

DataSet's DataTable's and TableAdapter's Oh My!
Here is my situation.  I am using VB as my programming language.I am creating a part of a website that will be the admin section.  I want the admin to be able to add/edit data in a set of tables that normal users can't.  There are 20 lookup tables that I use in the website that I want the admin to be able to manage (i.e. add, edit, delete, insert).  I don't want to create 20 separate web pages (one for each table).  I have one page that has links to all the tables.  Each link has a "table" querystring variable associated with it.  When the...
