If the service doesn't start, you should check the Windows event log for messages. hmm. this was posted in the "general" newsgroup (twice) as well. You should only post your question once in one newsgroup in case others want to follow the discussion. Starting 3 discussions makes that harder to do. <MAK> wrote in message news:4d062c24.701c.1681692777@sybase.com... > Hi, > > I have installed Sybase ASE 15.5 Developer Edition on > Windows XP (SP3), but the following Services are not getting > started automatically or manually. > > Sybase BCKServer _ <ServerName>_BS > Sybase MONServer _ <ServerName>_MS > Sybase SQLServer _ <ServerName> > Sybase Unified Agent > Sybase XPServer _ <ServerName>_XP > > Attached is the log when I executed manually the > RUN_<ServerName>.bat which gets stuck on the last line of > the log. > > I would appreciate if you could help me out on the above > Services getting started. > > Thanks and regards, > MAK >

Hi Rob, Thanks for your reply. I checked the Event Viewer (Application) log but couldn't find anything that says regarding the non-starting of Sybase Services. I don't seem to understand why the Services are not starting whether manually or automatically through the Services.msc viewer of Windows even though the ASE software got installed correctly. Please help me out in resolving this issue. hi kevin, i apologize for the inconvenience. the reason for posting the same query over here was that i thought probably i might have posted my query in the wrong newsgroup, i.e. general, hence once again i posted my query in "administration" newsgroup. but from now onwards i'll continue in this newsgroup only at least for this query. so please help me out with the solution for my below service related problem. thanks, mak > hmm. this was posted in the "general" newsgroup (twice) > as well. If the service doesn't start then either there is an error, in which case there must be something in the event log. Try starting the service form the command line, i.e. "net start sybsql_xyz" if 'xyz' is the name of your ASE server. Run this from a DOS box, and see if there's an error, then check the event log for details. If not, then perhaps the service is not properly defined at all. Since *all* your ASE services aren't starting, I'm guessing it is something in this area. Check the path to the executables; use syconfig.exe to see if you can moify the startup parameters, or look directly in the registry to see the command line that is kicked off when starting the service. You'll need to dig into this -- it may be a Windows issue ather than a specific Sybase issue. HTH, Rob V. Due to the ever increasing number of questions I am receiving, I currently simply don't have the time to answer detailed individual questions. Please post your question to one of the ASE-related newsgroups so that the ASE community can participate/benefit. These newsgoups are comp.databases.sybase (Usenet), as well as various newsgroups on Sybase's own news server (forums.sybase.com). Also, please provide sufficient technical details (error messages, actual queries, query plans, etc.) about your problem. Try the Sybase FAQ at http://www.isug.com/Sybase_FAQ/, which contains answers to many questions about ASE. Kind regards, Rob Verschoor If you don't want to use X Windows, you could try "sybinit4ever", a free tool which uses only an ASCII interface to create a new ASE server. It can be downloaded from http://www.sypron.nl/si4evr.html See the ASE reference manual / System Administration Guide / Transact-SQL user's guide This / These books can be viewed or downloaded as PDF files from the Sybase website http://www.sybase.com/support/manuals/ . For more details how to get there, see http://www.sypron.nl/sybbooks.html . For more information on the background of this problem, as well as a solution, see http://www.sypron.nl/idgaps.html . .... syntax and description are in the ASE Quick Reference Supplement, which you can download from http://www.sypron.nl/ase_qref.html (for a better version, see my book -- www.sypron.nl/qr). To use dynamic SQL, you need at least ASE version 12.0, which has the "execute immediate" feature for this. In earlier versions of ASE you can simulate some types of dynamic SQL though; for more information, see http://www.sypron.nl/dynsql.html and http://www.sypron.nl/dynsqlcis.html . For more information about Sybase Certification Exams, see http://www.sypron.nl/certtips.html . The ASE Performance and Tuning Guide contains a lot fo info about this topic. You can download this manual from http://sybooks.sybase.com/as.html . Hi Rob, Thanks for the solution. I could start the all the services using "net start" except the xp server which gives the error "System error 1067 has occurred". But all these services has to be started via DOS box manually. Is it possible to automate this task? Also these services do not start when I use the gui based Services.msc to start manually or try to automate. Could you please let me know why this happens? Is it the problem is with Win XP? Dunno, if the service start manually but not through the Control Panel, that's really a Windows problem. Rob V. On 14-Dec-2010 17:37, MAK wrote: > Hi Rob, > Thanks for the solution.
