Bug / Possible permissions error (?) re: trying to edit Gnome 'classic' main menu

see [image:
http://sites.google.com/site/brbrasher/bryan-s-file-cabinet/screenshot_0.xcf]

I added 'Menu Bar' (comes standard in 11.2) from the 'Add to Panel'
options and I can't seem to change anything with it. (see image)

Is there possibly a way that I am not doing this as a superuser? ...a
bug? Any suggestions?

EDIT: Not sure why (img)xxx(/img) doesn't work - does it have to be a
particular file type?

But the link is here:

Thanks!

you should not be doing this as superuser!

since you are trying to change YOUR menu, you should be able to do it
as you, a regular (non-super) user..

doing it as superuser would change the menu for root only (or maybe
system wide, i'm not sure...)

if you are unable to change your menu as you then something is wrong
with your system (possible caused by a previous login as root to
KDE/Gnome ?????)

you should never log into KDE/Gnome/XFCE or any other *nix-like
graphical user interface desktop environment as root..

doing so 1) opens you up to several different security problems, 2)
too many too easy ways to damage your system no matter how careful
your actions (example: just browsing in your home directory while
logged into KDE/Gnome/etc as root can lock you out later as yourself
due to permissions damage), 3) and, anyway logging into KDE/etc as
root is *never* required to do any and all administrative duties..

so, always log in as yourself, and "become root" by using a root
powered application (like YaST, File Manager Superuser Mode) or using
"su -", sudo, kdesu, or gnomesu in a terminal to launch whatever tool
is needed (like Kwrite to edit a config file)...read more on all that

directly posting images to these fora is not possible...linking to
images elsewhere (as you did) is the way to go..

Thanks for the reply!

And, noted about logging in as root. I'm actually already doing that -
I just couldn't see any other reason why I wouldn't be permitted to
change my menu items!?! hah

ok...you don't tell if you are using KDE or Gnome or what...and you
should always do that (put it in your sig, once and it is done
forever...like mine) because it makes a difference..

so, i don't know where the stuff is saved for your menu...but,
whereever that is i think i'd find out and see if maybe the file with
it has maybe been set read only..

OR maybe you installed using a corrupted install disk...

1. did you get your install image from
http://software.opensuse.org/112/en ? (then where?)
2. did you check the md5sum of the downloaded iso?
3. burn the disk as slow as you can?
4. use good media?
5. do this http://tinyurl.com/yajm2aq before install attempt?

if you answered "no" (or "don't know") to any of those then see the
following cites, and if we can help further, please ask because we
want you to be successful:
