PatchLink Novell - the truth?
I have been dealing with these options over the last few weeks and I have come to a few conclusions: Although the product that Novell offers is an exact replica of patchlink update 5.0 its an older product. PatchLink Update 6.0 is out and novell does not have it. And it wont get it for quite some time as I was informed. Novells "lite" version only supports novell and windows and does not offer the same cross platform support that patchlink does. PLUS 6.0, comes with an agent management center, mandatory baseline, filtering options, etc. There is alot more to it than what novell offers now, and base on what I heard will ever offer. In addition Novell's tech support is horrible. Some dont even have a clue about the product at all, and their best are no more than level 1 support. I received all the help i needed through PatchLinks tech support, both on the 5.0 questions I had and 6.0. Why would i want to settle for a second rate, older product, that novell doesnt have the capability to support. As far as pricing goes, it was novells jump the gun reps that offered the product for low pricing, i was even offered a dollar a node subscription, when in fact the list price starts at 18. That is why many novell customers bought the product but dont have their subscriptions (licenses) turned on by patchlink who actually support and maintain the product, even for novell. This experience, as well as reading the commentary by novell staff in this forum have brought me to express my feelings, and brought my company (10k nodes) to drop novell. They were very untruthful about the relationship with patchlink from the begining. FYI, the only advantage that novell customers get is that the software is for free, which btw, patchlink honors as well if you are a novell house, like we were. the best solution I would advise if you are looking for patchlink patch management solution is to contact the actuall manufacturer. You wont have to deal with the run around with novell, you will receive alot more knowledge and support from people who are actually trained on the product. Thank you Peter

My mind goes in the same way as Peter. Every problem I had with the installation or something else were solved by other PatchManagement users or by PatchLink support. I never received an answer from Novell Support. I think they test this product like us, If not, tell me why you announce this product and it doesn't work with your Netware products ? The Netware agent cannot be installed on a Netware 6 SP3 server.

Normand, Novell is on an upward learning curve with Patchlink - Novell has access to Patchink's own support, but it's bound to take a little while before it's all integrated... Patchlink are telling us that version 6.0 is not out until around June 7th, at which point we will have access to it for our customers. OK, this is advance warning that I'm about to be reposting a bunch of patches of mine which appear to have succumbed to Warnock's Dilemma. The first three should be uncontroversial: there's a documentation fix-up for core.ops, and new tests for strings and stacks. The last one is rather larger, and consists of a greatly expanded set of tests for PerlString's, plus a bunch of bug-fixes. The hotpatch has resolved my Optiplex GX745 boot issue, however I would like to throw out some observations. We have a script that reads the Image Safe Data and these are the changes I have notices. `zisview Name` used to return the PC name value from the image safe data, now it has changed to `zisview ComputerName` `zisview Wrokgroup` used to return the workgroup value from the image safe data, now it has changed to `zisview WindowsWrokgroup` is the purpose of changing these attribute names a path forward for something in the future? Would anyone be able to help with the following??? We currently use patchlink to deploy patches to approximatly 1800 PC's. We did have the patches required assigned as mandatory baselines however reading various posts, news letters etc the patches should be deployed using Group Deployments. I have created a package, which is fine, however because we have machines added all the time they dont automatically get the deployments I have created as they where added to the User group we have after the scheduled start time of the deployment!
