How much memory should a server use? DHCP/DNS/WWW/GrpWise(POA/MTA/GWIA/GWINTER)/iFolder/Msgr/File/iPrint/

We have a HP GL 380 G4 server with 4gb of ram (maxed out) and 200gb of
disk space (90gb free) being backed up with an 200gb LTO drive ... and
about 75 users (active connections) accessing files, printing, getting
email, et al + customers accessing our website.

I'm starting to think that we should order a separate groupwise/email /
web server in the two year budget due to memory usage. Since we
started using Groupwise our memory has dropped from 2gb free to 910mb
free... peak 760mb.

We also have received the Available Logical Space warning messages and
the Remote Administrator shows the Available Logical Space from
reaching "yellow" state is an on-going problem. Currently it's happy
again at 360mb since adding the -u######## switch to the server.exe
startup command in the autoexec.bat, but is that a permanent fix?

Are we looking good as far as memory goes? We're currently in the
process of moving all of our users onto the mail server. Currently
only about 40 users (30 left to migrate) are accessing our mail server
and the rest are still using a 3rd party vendor that had been hosting
our email via POP3 for the last 10 years.

Thanks,

Ryan

Personally, I'd run GW on its own server ...

As for 'how much memory a server uses' really varies depending on the
usage pattern and type of application that's on it. And the 'usage
pattern' is the key factor ...

What version of netware are you running? There have been TONS of memory
fixes, enhancements, etc.

We're currently running Novell Netware Small Business Suite 6.5 Support
Pack 4a

So we're up to about the latest and greatest "stable" memory
enhancements.

The server hasn't shown any signs of performance problems... yet, but
we have more users to add. Currently there's nothing in the budget for
an additional server -- so that's where my concerns come in.

our usage patterns are 10hrs a day, 4 days a week heavy usage by 80
people. Then moderate usage on friday and on-off usage the rest of the
time.

Like Peter noted, over the long haul you might well budget a second
server.

That being said, I have a number of SBS 6.5/6.6 clients running
GroupWise and NetWare on a single server (in some cases a second server
for BorderManager).

You might look to add more storage capacity.

Also, regarding a second server, one very good reason to consider
having one in the mix is to replicate Edirectory.

an you load seg.nlm, and get a copy of the segstats.txt for the server
(load seg, then from the seg main screen '/' -> Info -> Write Segstats)
then post that here.

Also, can you do a "load config /all" from the server, then post the
resulting sys:system\config.txt, after removing the file listing that
occurs after the set commands, and any sensitive infomation- eg serial
number, public IP addresses, snmp community strings, remote access
passwords etc.

If they are just accessing files and print, 2GB is generally more than
enough. However, if it also process LOTS of mail by GW, you'll need
more than 2GB, but again, I'd put that on a dedicated server ...

; This is a sample of the slp configuration file.
; Two types of entries can be made: 1) DA entries, 2) SA Register
Filters.
;
; The DA entry allows static configuration of a known DA. This would
be used
; when the DA was out of multicast range and DHCP was not being used
to
; configure the DA.
; The static DA configuration format is as follows 'DA <addr type>,
<addr>'.
; The first word must be "DA". The addr type is the address type.
Currently, only
; IPV4 has been defined. IPV6 will be defined in the future. The
addr is
; the address specified.
;
; The following is an example of a static DA.
; DA IPV4, 130.1.1.1
;
; The SA Register Filter would be used when the administrator wanted
all services
; of a specific service type being mapped to a single scope. For
example,
; the administrator wanted all "lpr" printers being registered to
scope "printer".
; The format is as follows: 'REGISTER TYPE "<type name>" to SCOPE
"<scope name>"'.
; The parser will look for REGISTER, TYPE, and SCOPE as keywords
followed by quote on
; a single line. Example:
;
; REGISTER TYPE "lpr" to SCOPE "eng"
;
; The last line must contain a line feed and char return. A
semi-colon specifies a
; comment.

Ryan,

Btrieve is currently configured to use WAY to much memory -
approximately 512MB. Edit bti.cfg to reduce its usage - 100MB is
probably more than enough, and that only if you're using some LARGE
databases.

You're loading device drivers in onfig.sys and autoexec.bat - bad idea.
Comment them out.

You've got oplocks enabled, turn them off:

set client file caching enabled=off
set level 2 oplocks enabled=off

add to the beginning of autoexec.ncf:

set file cache maximum size=2147483648
set auto tune server memory=off
nss /MinBufferCacheSize=131072

Make those changes, then reboot the server. Let it run for a day or two,
then repost a new segstats.txt

Hamish,

My logical space is now sitting in SUSPECT state at about 320MB all the
time since the changes you recommended.

I haven't noticed any other performance changes. Would you like
another seg and config?

Thanks,

Ryan

Ryan,

I'd lower the threshold then. Sitting at that level is not a problem.

Would be interested in a look to see how its looking.

What DNS server is used when using a proxy server?
Hey to all :) When you are using an anonymous proxy-server for the internet what happens with the translation of typed URLs to the IP address? What DNS server is used for the URL translation of the websites you visit? 1. The DNS server of your ISP or 2. the DNS server of the anonymous proxy server? Or in other words, who manages the URL translation for the visited websites: your ISP or the anonymous proxy server? migrate DNS from a netware 5 server to a netware 6 server
Are there any instructions for moving the dns from a netware 5 server to a netware 6 server and maintaining the databases? I don't want to have to reenter all of my special DNS info again. Also, when I change the DNS server, I would like to maintain the same IP address for the DNS service. I know I could do an add secondary ipaddress, but is there anything I need to do in the DNS setup to have it respond to that secondary ipaddress rather than the ip address that is on my netware 6 server already? How much memory can Netware use?
Is Netware subject to the same limitations as Windows with a 4GB space due to addressing issues on 32 bit processors or can it access additional memory for caching, etc??
