VPN access crashes server

I have a user that was allowed VPN access.
It has now been removed (user is simply not authorized any more)

But each time that user tries to access VPN the server abends in IKE (BM 3.8
SP4)

Anybody has an idea how to stop this happening?

There were a lot of VPN-related fixed in BM38sp5. I'd put that on, and the
post-sp5 IR1 patch as well. I would also get up to the latest NetWare support
patch and post-sp patches as listed in tip #1 at the URL below. This sounds
like it might be an NMAS-related issue.

I also suspect it is NMAS related.
In fact now even me (as admin) crash the server if trying to access it
via VPN
No idea what might be casuing it.
I am in fact on BM 3.8.5

Server was working fine for years, suddenly stopped, updated security
update 2.05, NMAS 3.2.0.1, reconfigured VPN
No difference, EACH time same abend:

No difference.

Updated VPN client to 3.9.0 (even connecting to 3.8.5 server)
Also updated on the client PC
NMAS Client 3.4.2 FTF
Challenge Response Client 2.7.6 FTF

and... connected to the server no problems at all.

It looks like client's NMAS might have been crashing IKE

Really unpleasant!

But it works for now

Well, thanks for the info on that - I'm surprised a client-side program
would be causing the abend.

Try Security Services 2.06 (NMAS 3.2.1) patch.

Too late to see it that on its own fixes it, as I already said, client
NMAS FTF made the trick

Sadly, after next server reboot & access via VPN again same problem.
It just crashes

As far as I can see there is NOTHING else that I can try

I love Novell's products but moments like that want me to change to
something else that will not give me this grief

Still having issues there?

I've got lots of clients with BM VPN servers who are not having any
crashes with them, vpn-related or not. I'm really wondering what is
unusual about your server.

I have some workaround ideas for you, but they involve a backup BM
server.

It all started when I introduced Universal Password to my eDirectory

Seems that once I applied UP policies to the VPN user the crash on
server-side stopped happening

I also never had any problems with BM in the last 5+ years

Interesting. So you applied UP, and started crashing, but then applied
UP to VPN, and crashes stopped?

Yes, applied UP to VPN USER(s) and crashes stopped
Tried few times by now (also rebooted server in between) and the
problem did not re-appear

Thanks for the feedback.

I'd guess this was some sort of NMAS issue...

Server access with VPN
I an new to this whole VPN thingy. I am running 3 Novell SBS 6.0 Sp4 servers and one has Border Manager 3.6 running. For right now I only want VPN clients to access the GroupWise 6.0 POA located on the Border Manager Server, but I was wondering if I need to setup something differently if I want VPN clients to access the other servers. My boss doesn't want the other servers to be reached from the outside, but we had talked about possibly in the future allowing access to them. Anyway I don't want to have to set things up twice if I don't have to. Just wondering, ...

Is BorderManager required for VPN access
We run a mixed 4.2/5.1 network and are looking at installing a mail and internet proxy server. This server is VPN enabled supporting both PPTP and IP-sec. We require remote clients using XP systems to log in to the network. Do I need Border Manager to achieve this ? If not, what would the client systems use to make a connection ? > We run a mixed 4.2/5.1 network and are looking at installing a mail and > internet proxy server. VPN appliance and Server access
Greets, I have opted for a SnapGear SME550 VPN appliance for remote access to our NW5.1 servers inside our LAN. So far, I can get inside the LAN from a remote win98 box and ping my servers on 192.168* and even bring up Management Portals for each server with a web browser. Do I still need to do all this BorderManager 'stuff' to login to the Novell Tree and map a few drives? Currently, BorderManager is not installed in our network...but I do have some old BorderManager VPN 3.5 here I could install ONLY if I have to. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Roote...

Access to server via VPN
Hi All, How can I setup my Nw6SP3 file server so that users can access their files over a VPN link? I've tinkered with ifolder but I think that remote users want to be able to access their files as if they were in the office. Anyone help? Regards. > How can I setup my Nw6SP3 file server so that users can access their files > over a VPN link? If using Novell Client, just replace the server name with its IP address under Novell GUI Login | Advanced. Once VPN'd, you should be able to hit the server. -- Edison Ortiz Novell Product Support Forum SysOp (...

Installing a new server over a VPN
I am having trouble installing a new server into an existing tree over a VPN. One server is running at Location A. Location A is using segment 192.168.1.0/24. I have created a separate container and partitioned the container in NDS to hold the new server. The new server is being added to Location B. Location B is using segment 192.168.2.0/24. The two segment are connected to each other using a VPN. I am able to ping and run tracert to the IP of the server at location A successfully. As a test, when I installed the new server from location A, with an IP on the ...

Installation crashes while selecting server
Hi, We are testing ZfD4 right now on a Windows 2000 server. The first part of the installation (eDir, console1) goes alright, we don't care about syncing the eDir and the ADS at this stage. At the point in the ZfD server installation after you have to select which components you want to install, you have to browse for a server. In that screen the tree and OU are shown. As soon as we open the OU in which the server resides, the installation just exits. No errors, no DrWatson or whatever. I just checked de zfddebug.log, and nothing particular in there neither. We...

Server crashes after loading VPN
I have a BM 3.8 server at a client site w/ sp3 that abends during boot just after it loads ike.nlm. If I rename the VPN related NLMs (Authgw.nlm, vpmaster.nlm, ike.nlm, vpinf.nlm)and reboot the server loads fine. This server initially did not have the vpn component installed. I reinstalled BM and SP3 as well as updated to the TCP/IP NICI stack. The abend log is below: Cheers, Steve ********************************************************* Server MJ_FS2A halted Wednesday, August 10, 2005 4:02:26.926 pm Abend 1 on P00: Server-5.70.02: Page Fault Processor Exception (Err...

What files get installed on AIX server and is the EBF installed on AIX Server?
I installed Impact 5.3.1 on our server on Friday. Does anyone have a list of what should have been put in the Sybase directory? Also, does the EBF get installed on the server side or just the client. Since the instructions for installing the EBF don't quite fit the installed directories on the server(no Impact-5_3/bin directory) my best guess would be the EBF only gets installed on the client side. Am I right? On the last page of Chapter 1 of the Server installation guide, the section on Understanding Environment Variables refers to the c:\Sybase directory which is for ...

BorderManager Server Properties not Accessable in NWADMIN32
Been trying to install/configure BorderManager for a while now. Having several problems with the snapins for NWADMIN32. 1. When starting NWADMIN32, get NWADMIN32 splash screen, then BorderManager splash screen. But BorderManager splash screen shows BM 3.5, not BM 3.8 2. Opening Details pages on the NetWare server that BorderManager is installed on shows the BorderManager property pages. Clicking on any page gives message that BorderManager is not installed or not accessable. 3. When installing BorderManager snapins for NWADMIN32, the installer shows BM 3.7, not BM 3.8. ...
