Communication by Firefox devs to add-on devs
The time has come for the developers of Firefox to start communicating with the developers of add-ons. As a case in point: Recently the classic.manifest file in fx3 has had a large number of override codes added to it that reassigned filenames from example.png to example-aero.png. Suddenly, all third-party themes in Vista are now missing buttons in a number of places - some of them not easy to spot (e.g. - the wrap icon that shows up only when you reach the bottom of a page in a page search). If one of the themers had not had a user using Vista who communicated with him, and if the t...

Purpose of dev-tech-xpcom
What's the purpose of this list? I used to think it was about XPCOM itself, basically for questions about the code in xpcom/**. However, that doesn't seem to be how everyone else uses it. In fact, it seems to be about all coding questions that are somewhat Firefox- or XULRunner-related. Basically what the platform or extension lists are supposed to be. Should we, therefore, delete this list/newsgroup? As it is used, it is redundant. -christian -- All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances...

localizing Add-on SDK-based Firefox features
Localizers! I recently started the Jetpack Features working group [1] to investigate the feasibility of shipping core Firefox features as default addons built with the Add-on SDK (similar to the way the Test Pilot addon ships with Firefox beta builds), with an initial focus on the BrowserID, Open Web Apps, and F1 Sharing features. One of our challenges is figuring out how to localize these features, which embed strings in JavaScript code and also load HTML pages (but do not use XUL). Jetpack engineer Alex Poirot is working on a localization API for the SDK that should ev...
