AMO localization - how to localize categories

The list of categories (left-hand column in the home page) is stil in
English in the sl staging version

https://addons.allizom.org/sl/firefox/?browse=featured

.... and I can find the place where these en-US items (From Alerts /
Updates down to Other) are hiding. Could it be they are not
localizeable at all (like tags, here to stay)?

HI,
If you registered translator, on the Add-ons page in the menu Tools you
should see "Localizer tools" item. Just click this item, and next find your
locale and click it. In the right pane you will see Categories. Click this
item and translate strings.

Thanks, that got me further! Now I am stuck with the l10h home page
and the progress summary without any entries - no static localization,
no categories, no featured collections, no pages for sl.

Hope Wil can get me going ....

AFAIK that page is not updated anymore. Your categories are here
https://addons.mozilla.org/it/firefox/localizers/categories/?userlang=sl

_...or maybe it gets updated iff theres something to be updated about,
based on the staging.

No, I meant that, for what I know, this page is not used/updated anymore
(look at the activity log, static pages are included in the .po file
now, etc.) and should be removed at some point.

I don't think so: I suppose that amo and allizom use different
databases, so you should work on addons.mozilla.org. If you're not able
to open the Localizer tools section on AMO, you just have a problem with
permissions.

I would appreciate if somebody from higher up would clear these
specific points:

a) what is the role of addons.allizom.org vs addons.mozilla.org - my
assumption is it is staging vs production, but I may be wrong. So
where should the localized categories be entered and what rights /
pwds should I have? I can work in allizom, but not in mozilla.

b) Seems like pages https://addons.allizom.org/en-US/localizers resp.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/localizers are not supported
anymore?

c) where do we (i.e. l10n for sl) stand? It would be good to know the
current percentage finished. The po is prettz much done, so are
categories now, but none of collections and pages, as I have no idea
where to look for guidance. For me and for sl customers it is pretty
much a case of diminishing returns and somewhere somehow I'd like to
say "that's it". Could well be that this is the point.

Hi,

You've caught the US on a holiday weekend, so we're a bit slow to
respond. Regarding your questions:

correct, allizom is staging, mozilla is production. Occasionally (weeks
to months) we'll completely rewrite the staging database with a fresh
database from production. Nothing should be done in staging unless you
are just testing something. If you want to make changes that last do
them in production.

They are broken right now, yes. They have a long tale of excuses but
that's the short of it. Your actual localizing pages should still
function correctly, the links on the right hand side of that page when
you are logged in.

Every week or so I send out an email with all the current percentage of
localized strings. There are 491 untranslated strings as of that last
update (Jun 17 was the last one I found).

If you tell me your locale and your email account on AMO I can check to
make sure you have permissions if that is the issue.

Thanks,

[AMO] Localizing category names works again
Good news! Rob Hudson migrated the category localization pages from PHP to Python last week. They are currently being tested on the -dev site but I plan to push them to the live site next week unless we encounter troubles (live means, removing the /z/ prefix in the URL). The top level page can be tested at: > https://addons-dev.allizom.org/z/en-US/localizers/ If you click on your locale and then look on the left there is a "Categories" link option which will allow you to localize categories. An example URL: > https://addons-dev.allizom.org/z/en-US/localize...

Switching from dev web server to local IIS?
I'm working on a website, located in C:\Documents and Settings\noobjk\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\WebSites\WebSite1. I can test it by hitting F5 and launching the development web server, but I'd rather just use my local instance of IIS. (Why have two webservers running when one's enough?)To do this, I assume I need to move the files into the IIS root, c:\inetpub\wwwroot -- but which files? This switch from VS 2003 has got me pretty confused. Hi noobjk, You actually don't need to have the files under c:\inetput\wwwroot anymore -- you can now store them anywhere on disk. To setup you a...

English locale in the localized versions
Hello, It would be very nice if all versions of Firefox would also include the English locale and an easy way to switch to it. Not everyone likes their software not being in English, and the auto-detection feature of the download page makes it easy to get a localized version by mistake. I've ran into this problem several times while setting up friends' PCs, and having to reinstall Firefox was annoying. I realize that adding all locales like, say, Opera does would more than double the installer size, but the English locale alone is small, and the changes required would be t...

If I publish a website developed in Visual Web Developer Express, does the Sql Server database have to be local to the web server?  Your post is a little vague, so I'l do my best to try and answer. The short answer, no.The SQL Server database has to be accessible to the web appilication though, but doesn't need to be local. It can either be on another server on the same network, or it can be on another server half way across the country (The firewall has to be configured though). Most of the sites I've done, have all of the databases on a dedicated Server, while the...
