Strange errors n OS X platform

I have seen strange errors on OSX 10.6 and 10.10
on tryserver during xpcshell-tests for C-C TB, but
I think these errors are application neutral.
(OK, it could be related to build infrastructure differences. I have no
idea.)

For example, you can find the error on OSX 10.6 build,
say,
https://treeherder.mozilla.org/#/jobs?repo=try-comm-central&revision=2eb2e1ab94b0

There on OS X 10.10 optimization shows the error with the test file
test_osfile_async_copy.js: what I find strange is
the missing function symbol (?) error in the message in the excerpted
log below. It mentions "Function:1042" (!?)
(I only mention this osfile_async_copy as an exemplary error: there are
series of tests that fail due to similar issues of missing function symbol.)

I have seen this in other people's build submission logs on tryserver.
For example,
https://treeherder.mozilla.org/#/jobs?repo=try-comm-central&revision=2eb2e1ab94b0
See OSX 10.0 optimization log there.

I wonder if someone can shed some light on the nature of the bugs.
Also, if it is a known bug that occurs from time to time for no apparent
reason (??? I hate this type of problems, though ???),
I wonder why it is not filed as "Intermittent" failure.

Thank you. I did not know that.

However, what perplexes me is that
if these errors are marked as intermittant, then why
the particular error log line is not followed by the
bugzilla entry like many other intermittent errors. That is why I got
confused and did not know it.
Maybe the bugzilla entry needs to marked as intermittent so that the
error in the tryserver test log is propery annotated?

The tests appear to be failing at the "getCurrentDirectory" line.

Suspect:

It seems
Bug 994951 - Activate OS.File xpcshell tests on B2G
changed the code somewhat, but probably it is not the culprit.

I am not sure how the code can return null if one of the first if
conditions are true (and the last else clause makes me a little
uncomfortable, but we trust system calls. Erh?)

But what perplexes me is that sometimes this bug is not triggered and
sometimes it is. (Oh maybe it is likely to happen on optimized build
than on the debug build.I see the error in OSX 10.6 opt and 10.10 opt in
the particular tryserver run. Hard to say at this moment.)

I assume they do not show up because the treeherder scripts only check
for title match. And the bug reports use different titles to express
that it handles more than one test case failure.

I suspect in Bug 1224846 that this could be a packager/deployment
problem just like the previous test failures that were only observed in
OS X Opt builds. Tests pass during OS X Debug builds and according to
comments in the bug reports the test pass locally as well. For me this
indicates that some files are not in place when the test runs. Now if
the error message would include the file or function that should be
loaded via require script.

I only found one similar bug in Bugzilla:
Bug 959554 - *** ERROR addons.xpi: Failed to process extension changes
at startup: Error: couldn't find function symbol in library
(resource://gre/modules/osfile/osfile_unix_allthreads.jsm:68)

This is DUPLICATEd to:
Bug 960509 - 32bit mode of Firefox 29.0a1 is busted on OS X

This might be a difference between the APIs in 32bit OSX and in 64bit OSX.

Try adding some logging e.g.

Aha, I see.

In this case, although the desire to cover more than one test case
failures is understandable,
it would have been useful to file separate bugs so that the known
intermittant failures are marked in the
treeherder log as such.

Just my two cents worth.
