Status 301 handling for the awesome bar

If a server returns a 301 (permanently moved) status for a URL accessed via
the awesome bar dropdown, the now obsolete URL persists in that database
with its relatively high priority, and the replacement URL is added with a
low ('first access") priority. Wouldn't it be better to have the new URL
completely replace the obsolete one and inherit its priority, i.e., isn't
that the logical extension of 301 handling for that situation?

This sounds totally reasonable to me. Have you added a bug?

It is bug 213467 [1], and it isn't as straightforward as it may seem.

That's specifically about bookmarks (holy crap, I commented in that =
bug!) and I don't think that's the exact same issue that Fote's asking =
about, really. It's related, though.

I'm not as concerned about the malicious attack case as I am about the =
public-wifi-redirect case. We should really devise and code an algorithm =
for detecting such situations and use it as a way of acting smartly =
here. Cases where 301s are within-domain, for example, seem like =
straightforward ones for automatic replacement.

I would much rather have that the suggestions from the AwsomeBar
contains the URLs which I entered, and which I can remember, rather than
the URLs which they redirected to, and which I wouldn't have a chance
remembering. I don't know if these sites usually use 301 or 302.

A URL need not be bookmarked to show up in the awesome bar dropdown menu, so
no, my concern was not specifically about bookmarks.

From the discussion in bug 213467 I think that within-domain 301's are not
all that straightforward, either. For example, a URL without a path is
supposed to be a request for the site's "index page" which could have any of
a number of conventional names ("paths") -- for either a hard document or a
script. If some sites are returning a 301 with a path field in the URL,
that is misuse of the 301 (IMHO) and should not in fact be handled as a
"permanent" redirect.

Because the inclusion and positioning ("priorities") of entries in the
awesome bar dropdown menu are based on such a large number of factors, and
301's can be misused (either with malicious intent or "stupidly"), I suspect
that any bug I might file based on the concern I raised last night would
become a "de facto" WONTFIX a la
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213467#c23

And we have enough bugs that just sit there for years, so I'll pass on
filing a likely additional one. :<)

Firefox 3 feedback
Name: CTM Product: Firefox Summary: Firefox 3 feedback - The Awesome Bar is NOT awesome Comments: The "awesome bar" is incredibly annoying. I liked the behavior of the previous version more: typing in a URL would instead bring up a direct history, and I could easily hit my down key to access previously visited URLs that began with the same start string. This is convenient. It is NOT convenient to be tossed a huge, bulky drop-down menu of non-matches that instead try to pick words from bookmarks or previously visited pages that may not even have anything to do with t...

In FF 3 all I have is this other thing which may or may not be useful. As a result I uninstalled version 3 until a fix is released that will allow me to disable this feature so that the location bar functions as it did in version 2. It would be even better if you could somehow use both. I would then try out the so called "Awesome" bar as long as I still had the functionality ...

Firefox Status Bar
Hi Gregory, I don't use a screen reader so I'm not sure how the following will work for you but they are worth trying. The Organize Status Bar extension for Firefox allows you to hide and rearrange the items in the Status Bar. A lot add-ons (but not all) have alternative means for accessing them other than just in the status bar so you could obviously hide those. Organize Status Bar https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1759 I prefer to have a second status bar rather than lose any icons so I use the Statusable Firefox add-on that provides a second status ...
