Gang, From the list of available public DNS servers, these are either unresponsive or actively rejecting queries from my location: 4. 2. 2. 4 65. 74.140. 3 66. 90. 68. 15 66. 90. 68. 16 66. 90. 68. 25 66. 90. 68. 26 67.138. 54.100 151.197. 0. 38 151.197. 0. 39 151.202. 0. 84 151.202. 0. 85 151.203. 0. 84 151.203. 0. 85 192. 76. 85.133 199. 45. 32. 37 199. 45. 32. 38 199. 45. 32. 40 199. 45. 32. 43 199.166. 31. 3 206.111.255.123 207.225.209. 66 220.233.167. 31 I would LOVE to get some confirmation that it's not just me (my location, carrier, etc.), but that these are GENERALLY publicly unavailable for everyone ... so that I can exclude them from the DNS Benchmark's suggestion and public server testing/benchmark list. To test whether a specific nameserver is responsive from your location, fire up a MS-DOS Prompt (DOS Box) and give the command 'nslookup' (w/o the quotes). You should get a simple '>' prompt. > To first see what a SUCCESSFUL DNS lookup looks like, just enter a domain name, like 'grc.com' and press enter. After a short pause you should see some lines and finally one showing the IP address of grc.com, which is currently '4.79.142.200'. Thus the lookup worked correctly using the default nameservers for your system. Now we want to see whether the same lookup functions when you specify the specific nameserver for nslookup to query ... from the list of those above. To set a server to test, use the "server" command, like this: > server 4.2.2.4 nslookup will switch to using that as the default server for subsequent lookup queries. Next, simply give it a domain name to lookup, like 'grc.com', simply by entering the domain name and hitting Enter: > grc.com If the lookup succeeds, you'll get grc.com's address, otherwise you'll receive a timeout, refused, or other error. --- So my question is ... do **ANY** of those nameserver listed above work for **ANYONE** ??? Thanks a million!!! -- ________________________________________________________________ Steve. Working on: GRC's DNS nameserver spoofability testing. https://www.grc.com/dns/dns.htm

Correction... I *AM* getting DNS replies from 199.166.31.3 (ns1.quasar.net) But not from *any* others. :) Thanks! -- ________________________________________________________________ Steve. Working on: GRC's DNS nameserver spoofability testing. https://www.grc.com/dns/dns.htm

Picked up your request in grc.news, but I don't subscribe to grc.dns... By coincidence, I dumped my ISP'd DNS servers (too slow) earlier this week and used 4.2.2.4, 4.2.2.5. They have handeld my DNS needs impeccably since. I thought I'd run a tracert for you to 4.2.2.4 to see where that DNS server is located from my point of view. > C:\WINDOWS>tracert 4.2.2.4 > > Tracing route to vnsc-pri-dsl.genuity.net [4.2.2.4] > over a maximum of 30 hops: > > 1 3 ms <1 ms 3 ms 192.168.1.254 > 2 47 ms 46 ms 48 ms 64.230.197.121 > 3 46 ms 45 ms 50 ms dis15-ottawa23_Vlan110.net.bell.ca [64.230.228.22] > 4 45 ms 44 ms 47 ms core2-ottawa23_GE11-1.net.bell.ca [64.230.241.221] > 5 50 ms 46 ms 49 ms Ncore3-montreal02_POS0-4-0-0.net.bell.ca [64.230.147.133] > 6 51 ms 49 ms 48 ms bx4-montreal02_so-0-0-0.net.bell.ca [64.230.170.174] > 7 50 ms 48 ms 49 ms peer_Level3_bx4-montreal02.net.bell.ca [67.69.246.126] > 8 69 ms 54 ms 57 ms ae-5-5.ebr4.NewYork1.Level3.net [4.69.141.6] > 9 60 ms 56 ms 68 ms ae-74-74.csw2.NewYork1.Level3.net [4.69.134.118] > 10 56 ms 57 ms 56 ms ge-5-0.core1.NewYork1.Level3.net [4.68.97.40] > 11 60 ms 56 ms 56 ms vnsc-pri-dsl.genuity.net [4.2.2.4] > > Trace complete. > > C:\WINDOWS> Looks like NYC from here... > So my question is ... do **ANY** of those nameserver listed > above work for **ANYONE** ??? Hi, Steve. Thanks for giving me an excuse to see if BIND's nameserver tools are available for Windows. They are! So I used "host" to get these results, instead of the ancient and annoying nslookup. RESULTS ================================ Returned Correct IP: 4.2.2.4 199.166.31.3 Query Refused: 66.90.68.15 66.90.68.16 66.90.68.25 66.90.68.26 Timed Out (10 seconds): 65.74.140.3 67.138.54.100 151.197.0.38 151.197.0.39 151.202.0.84 151.202.0.85 151.203.0.84 151.203.0.85 199.45.32.37 199.45.32.38 199.45.32.40 199.45.32.43 206.111.255.123 207.225.209.66 220.233.167.31 "grc.com has no A record": 192.76.85.133 ================================ That last one is interesting! I wonder what you do with a nameserver that doesn't have any A records. -- erbe

Hi, Steve Well, I've never done this before, but if I followed your instructions correctly, these servers seemed to work: 4.2.2.4 151.197.0.38 151.197.0.39 151.202.0.84 151.202.0.85 151.203.0.84 151.203.0.85 199.45.32.37 199.45.32.38 199.45.32.40 199.45.32.43 BTW, you're welcome a million. :) oat s

The error message you're getting isn't saying anything about the server--it's saying that the program you're running doesn't understand what you just asked it to do. :) -- Bob Trevithick Registered Linux User #426103

Hi, Steve After reading skepticalnewt's post in grc.news.feedback and seeing that he included 199.166.31.3 among the "living", I retested and had a result something like the following: > grc.com Server: ns1.quasar.net Address: 199.166.31.3 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. Non-authoritative answer: Name: grc.com Address: 4.79.142.200 The following was the result yesterday early evening or late afternoon (and this morning) that made me initially exclude it: > server 199.166.31.3 Default Server: ns1.quasar.net Address: 199.166.31.3 > grc.com Server: ns1.quasar.net Address: 199.166.31.3 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to ns1.quasar.net timed-out I wonder how many of the others are working and then not working like that? Or are semi-working? Well, I've never done this before (I mean, test servers in DOS box or anywhere else), but if I followed your instructions correctly, these servers seemed to work (in addition possibly to 199.166.31.3): 4.2.2.4 151.197.0.38 151.197.0.39 151.202.0.84 151.202.0.85 151.203.0.84 151.203.0.85 199.45.32.37 199.45.32.38 199.45.32.40 199.45.32.43 You're welcome a million. :) oat s Steve Gibson wrote: > Correction... > > I *AM* getting DNS replies from 199.166.31.3 (ns1.quasar.net) > > But not from *any* others. :) > > Thanks! >

FWIW I get a non-authoratative answer from L3 (4.2.2.4): > server 4.2.2.4 Default Server: vnsc-pri-dsl.genuity.net Address: 4.2.2.4 > grc.com Server: vnsc-pri-dsl.genuity.net Address: 4.2.2.4 Non-authoritative answer: Name: grc.com Address: 4.79.142.200 Some of the servers may be offline for maintenance etc. If they are dead, they won't do very well on the tests and will sink to the bottom of the pile won't they? They will soon be under radar and sonar...

Sometimes though 4.2.2.4 IS dead. I find that I have to keep switching DNS servers because they stop working. I use 4.2.2.4 and 128.171.3.13 (University of Hawaii) and when those suddenly stop working, I switch to my ISP's DNS servers (3 in Hawaii and one at Orange, California RR) and when those stop working, I switch back to the first two. Sometimes NONE of them work for 10 minutes or longer. Usually if they stop working it is during prime usage time in Hawaii. All others on the list are dead except I got the same strange response others have reported for 192.76.85. But given the strange things I have been seeing recently with the various DNS servers I use, some on that list that were dead when I tested them may well be alive the next time I test.

ONE thing that Steve and everyone should keep in mind - especially with the Level3 servers - is that the IP addresses 4.2.2.1 thru .6 (at least) are dynamically routed by border routers to the closest Level3 server (there likely is an official name for this effect, but I do not know it). It is possible that this dynamic routing might occasionally result in dead ends because changes have not been completely distributed to all border gateways... This is likely the case with some other public dns providers (Sprint? etc) who operate a network of dns servers, not just some beige box back at the rack at the ISP... :-)

In my case, since only that one of the six IPs continually fails I'm guessing that it's a static configuration problem of some sort. It's also interesting (to me) that none of Verizon's DNS servers are available to me (within Cogent's IP space.) -- ________________________________________________________________ Steve.
