Dead-for-me "Public" DNS Servers... Dead-for-you???

Gang,

From the list of available public DNS servers, these are either 
unresponsive or actively rejecting queries from my location:

I would LOVE to get some confirmation that it's not just me (my 
location, carrier, etc.), but that these are GENERALLY publicly 
unavailable for everyone ... so that I can exclude them from the 
DNS Benchmark's suggestion and public server testing/benchmark 
list.

To test whether a specific nameserver is responsive from your 
location, fire up a MS-DOS Prompt (DOS Box) and give the command 
'nslookup' (w/o the quotes). You should get a simple '>' prompt.

To first see what a SUCCESSFUL DNS lookup looks like, just enter 
a domain name, like 'grc.com' and press enter.  After a short 
pause you should see some lines and finally one showing the IP 
address of grc.com, which is currently  '4.79.142.200'.  Thus 
the lookup worked correctly using the default nameservers for 
your system.

Now we want to see whether the same lookup functions when you 
specify the specific nameserver for nslookup to query ... from 
the list of those above.

To set a server to test, use the "server" command, like this:

> server 4.2.2.4

nslookup will switch to using that as the default server for 
subsequent lookup queries.  Next, simply give it a domain name 
to lookup, like 'grc.com', simply by entering the domain name 
and hitting Enter:

> grc.com

If the lookup succeeds, you'll get grc.com's address, otherwise 
you'll receive a timeout, refused, or other error.

above work for **ANYONE** ???

The first one (4.2.2.4) works for me.  The next ones (above) don't. 
Will keep going through the list, but I thought the success on the one 
might be something you'd want to know asap.

Picked up your request in grc.news, but I don't subscribe to grc.dns...

By coincidence, I dumped my ISP'd DNS servers (too slow) earlier this 
week and used 4.2.2.4, 4.2.2.5. They have handeld my DNS needs 
impeccably since.

I thought I'd run a tracert for you to 4.2.2.4 to see where that DNS 
server is located from my point of view.

Bob, it would be quicker if you do:
make a file dns.server with the numbers from Steve post (without spaces), then execute:
a=`cat dns.server`; for b in $a; do dig @$b grc.com; done > resolv.dns.grc

It would take some time to contact all servers and receive answer, then you could just attach the file to a post.
You could "zip" it if you want also. I am sure Steve could parse the result.

If dig is not available in your system just use:
a=`cat dns.server`; for b in $a; do nslookup grc.com $b; done > resolv.dns.grc

Hi, Steve. Thanks for giving me an excuse to see if BIND's nameserver
tools are available for Windows. They are! So I used "host" to get these
results, instead of the ancient and annoying nslookup.

Jim, I think those spaces are tripping you up.  The error message you're 
getting isn't saying anything about the server--it's saying that the 
program you're running doesn't understand what you just asked it to do.  :)

Good that you qualified your statement. The Level 3 4.2.2.x DNS servers use
"Anycast" technology, and will trace a different destination, depending on

I've attached a .bat file (under 1k) that attempts to resolve news.grc.com on 
all of the servers you listed, as well as using the default server for a 
reference comparison. Run as follows, it will provide usable output
(including stderr):

I've attached my dns.out as well. Only the first server (4.2.2.4) resolves 
correctly. One other server (192.76.85.133) just gives a strange result. I'm not 
sure why my default DNS server is timing out, either. :/

I've attached my results using Sam's batch file.

Slightly unusual DNS set-up here. A couple of windows 2000 servers as 
primary and secondary DNS which then use Treewalk (on an XP Pro machine) and 
my ISP's (Virginmedia formerly know as NTL) DNS servers as forwarders (in 
that order)

he included 199.166.31.3 among the "living", I retested and had a result 
something like the following:

I knew the Level 3 one wasn't dead before I tested because I use it (when it 
works).  Sometimes though 4.2.2.4 IS dead. I find that I have to keep 
switching DNS servers because they stop working. I use 4.2.2.4 and 
128.171.3.13 (University of Hawaii) and when those suddenly stop working, I 
switch to my ISP's DNS servers (3 in Hawaii and one at Orange, California 
RR) and when those stop working, I switch back to the first two.  Sometimes 
NONE of them work for 10 minutes or longer.  Usually if they stop working it 
is during prime usage time in Hawaii.

All others on the list are dead except I got the same strange response 
others have reported for 192.76.85.

But given the strange things I have been seeing recently with the various 
DNS servers I use, some on that list that were dead when I tested them may 
well be alive the next time I test.

ONE thing that Steve and everyone should keep in mind - especially with the 
Level3 servers - is that the IP addresses 4.2.2.1 thru .6 (at least) are 
dynamically routed by border routers to the closest Level3 server (there 
likely is an official name for this effect, but I do not know it). It is 
possible that this dynamic routing might occasionally result in dead ends 
because changes have not been completely distributed to all border 
gateways...   This is likely the case with some other public dns providers 
(Sprint? etc) who operate a network of dns servers, not just some beige box 
back at the rack at the ISP...

In my case, since only that one of the six IPs continually fails 
I'm guessing that it's a static configuration problem of some 
sort.

It's also interesting (to me) that none of Verizon's DNS servers 
are available to me (within Cogent's IP space.)

I managed to get the Verizon DNS to work ... but then I am on Verizon, 
so that might be the difference.  Here is what I got:

My local router is configured as my DNS server. The router uses OpenDNS. DNS Benchmark suggests that my current server is the fastest which I take to be based on the cached speed. The cached speed is almost instantaneous. The uncached speed is the same as OpenDNS (as would be expected). OpenDNS itself is about #30 on my list. Just a General Wonderment About "Open" DNS Servers
If a Google or a GRC includes massive lists of DNS servers known to work and... just use them... what's the ramifications? If they are available to use the owner must be giving implied permission? It got me thinking about WIFI. Now, my biggest argument is that WIFI is administered by lesser expertise than DNS servers. And that may be the answer. But... The "Edit DNS Server IPs" user interface
I find the "Edit DNS Server IPs" user interface a little unfriendly (confusing, even). In particular: (a) When I add an IP address, there is no indication that anything has happened. The IP address stays in the field where I typed it, and there is no "done" or "added" message to show that anything has happened.
