Connection established - NO connection!? -- please respond!

Huge problem at the moment:
I am connected to the internet via Wifi (NetworkManager) - and
Konqueror tells me I am ONLINE in our local library. They run an open
network and users need to log in on a special website to get full
internet access. As stated, my computer tells me I would be online, but
I dont have any connection (neither via FF, nor via Konqueror). Same
applies when connected via Ethernet. Oh, and Ive already tried to use
and change settings with traditional method with ifup...

Strange: In my own villa everything works perfect.
*
ANY HELP IS VERY MUCH APPRECTIATED. PLEASE DONT HESITATE!*

Hi
Can you provide you credit cards details please ;) lol

So do you get an IP address? Can you see their access point in the
NetworkManager? You haven't set a static ip address and it's not
getting a dhcp one?

Hi malcolmlewis. For my credit card details PM me.

I see EVERYTHING as normal in NetworkManager. I am able to select the
AP, it loads, it connects. Konqueror states I am online.
Then again, when trying to actually call a page, no byte reaches my
screen.
I've tried to change settings with IFUP (even if the program is totally
****) and I am SURE that the address is DHCP.

Pinging won't work. Ping google and console states the same as if wifi
is completely switched of. Thanks for helping, bro.

Can you ping an ip number 208.69.34.231 for example but not www.google.com
if so it is not DHCP but you DNS.

Hi
So your not re-directed to a portal for logging in assuming that's how
it's meant to go at the library?

Do you get a dns server entry in /etc/resolv.conf and route (netstat
-ar)?

Do you have wireshark installed to do a packet capture?

Thanks for staying with me, baskitcaise and malcolmlewis!

Baskitcaise: Today I'll be sitting in my University again - probably
once more with the same issue. Would you be so friendly and tell me how
to fix the configuration IF your above mentioned case would turn out to
be true? Maybe the problem fixes itself this way.

Malcolmlewis: Nope, no redirection. I'll post the output of netstat -ar
later. Wireshark is installed, I'll try to launch a capture when I'm
there.

Thanks for your effort, but I've been notified before. You know... I'm
working here. ;)
All other users are able to use the network with their laptops. I guess
something isn't right with my configuration due to the fact that I can
connect, but don't receive a single byte.
I'd be happy to receive some further suggestions.

Hi
Just making sure ;) Thought you were visiting though :)

So you get an ipaddress, what about dns entries in /etc/resolv.conf.

Can you check another users entries (winipcfg or from a dos
box ipconfig /all on windows machines) for DNS and gateway.

I'm wondering if you are using kde4-networkmanager or the one for kde3.
It shouldn't be an issue but my curiosity would have me try the kde3
version if you are not using it.
I actually still use it all the time.

If you are using networkmanager-kde, then you really should be fine. Red
packages mean a roll back. But you may have some inconsistency in your
repo's with priority.

Code:
--------------------
    zypper lr --details
--------------------

we can have a look.

But it's unlikely that this current update/roll-back thing is the
issue.
T.B.H; It's most likely a config issue.
But I have never used a connection in a public place so I'm a little
out of the water.

Several are marked red. No NetworkManager for KDE4 installed - just KDE.
Is an upgrade key? ;)

Second though about your red packages. Is this computer NOT connected to
the Internet?

Actually that list is a bit messy. Are you actually wanting kde4.2.* or
kde4.3.* RC3?

Afaics and iirc I'm really unsure what package highlighted this to me
red is a vendor change.

Man first, have a try at Info, have a look at 'Wiki'
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page), if all that fails 'Scroogle'
If I've helped click on the Rep button I don't know what it does but it
sounds cool.

@caf: KDE4 - always on the bleeding (but stable) edge. Hand me a towel
to clean up the mess! ;)

Remove everything kde4 for now. And to get kde4.3 see this:
'KDE4.3.* Upgrade - HowTo - openSUSE Forums'

*Please note to set priority to 99 for all repos except: oss, and
non-oss which should be 120

*You actually do not need qt44

*And VLC should be disabled, then do unconditional update in Packman
and accept vendor changes to Packman in any error's that pop up.

No.
Did you actually change anything. It's a PITA to read your list too, so
darn wide.

REMOVE all your kde4 repo's
The add back as in the guide.
Change all your priorities.

It's easier for you to do all this than for me. But if you really can't
manage I'll do it, but it will be tomorrow before I have time. I can
have it done by 6am BST

I'm not sure of the wisdom of the X11 kde4 factory, but maybe you added
it for a reason?
Pikerhog? what is that?

I already did ad the 2 repositories as mentioned in the HowTo. And if
you take a CLOSE look at the table above your last post you will notice,
that priorities were already changed.
Are you sure you've never heard of the magic pickerhog repo? ;)

Is there actually a way to find out if this issue is coused by wrong
settings?

I had said, remove all kde4 repos and add in the 2 from the kde4.3
howto. But look what you still had:

Not really. But the fact that it was working and now it's not. And the
fact that no one else is reporting issues with networkmanager. Suggest
that user config/settings is the problem.
Sometimes if you just delete the wireless entry from the list of
connections and create it anew can help.

Already deleted and created a new profile for that particular AP. As for
me, I've never had that issue before either. I have the strong feeling
that it might be resolved after updating my repos and upgrading some
packages.

Right now internet connection over here is really crappy (don't ask
why) and YaST2 always times out. Would you please provide a small hint
on 'THIS' (http://tinyurl.com/l26t83) thread for me?
Actually it's not the first time I've been searching for a solution to
this. I'm _sure_ other users would love to see an answer there, too.

Thanks. ;)

Back in Black!
The issue is still not resolved. Its impossible to work with those
crappy WinXP computers our university provides...
On top of all, they are occupied most of the time.

Ive collected relevant data of my network configuration with
collectNWData.sh.
As youn can imagine, I already did looked up the stated "causes", but
Im missing the point on fixing.

Id appreciate it *very much* if one of the network professionals here
would take a closer look at this: 'CollectNWData.sh :: Paste 200YNZdT2o'

@TheMask
I am afraid my understanding of all this is too limited to offer much
advice. But I suspect, that if your connection works well in one place
(A) and not in another (B), the problem lies at point (B). Identify the
differences at (B) and you might be on to something.

Differnce between A to B is the encryption. While A uses WPA BEFORE you
get in, B redirects to a standart web page - and if correct login data
is given, grants access to the world of wwww.
Boy, I though the log might help somehow. Ill talk to the developer of
the script.

Things i found from the script :-

1 ) CND0150E: Es knnte ein Problem mit der default gateway definition
141.76.176.1 am Interface ath1 vorliegen ----- Means the default gateway
needs sorting

2 ) <6>thinkpad_acpi: radio switch found; radios are disabled -----
have you checked this ?? is it set on ?

There may be more,If there is i'll get back to you.

First of all: Thanks for taking the time to digg through the log,
deltaflyer.
As for point #1: What exactly do you mean by "needs sorting"? Point #2:
In order for wireless to work, OpenSuse completeley ignores the radio
switch. It only matters when using bluetooth.

The ip you put in the default gateway for ath1 ( your wireless device )
is incorrect, you need to put the correct ip in

Mh... I am working with KNetworkManager, my interfaces are not
configured with ifup. Normally it should detect the IP. Where may I set
it in KNetworkManager?

I've been reading alot about configuring networks in OpenSuse by now -
and still I can't figure out where exactly the problem resists.
Somewhere online I've read that it would be mandatory to enable option
"Request Broadcast-Respond" in YaST2 in Network settings.
This very specific option is not ticked in my settings - it stays gray
and can't even be enabled. If anyone knows some advice for further
proceeding, I am more than glad to hear it.

You need to go to YaST - network devices - network settings & do it
there. You can set the dns, default gateway, host name etc there

Looks like you've received my message. I'll post the output as soon as
I get back to my university network (probably tomorrow).

Issue resolved. I noticed that OpenSuse dropped a hint for e during
bootup that resolv.conf was modified. Deleted that one and since then,
everything is cool. Whoa. Many words about nothing.
THANKS to everyone who was/is patient with me. Even with my many posts
anfd being a "parent penguin", I am still stunned at how many
possobilities OpenSuse brings with itself. Learning is a lifelong
process.
