VWD 2008 express bug? cannot display aspx in design mode and split mode

I've installed VWD2008 Express on two machines. The aspx page cannot be switched to Design or Split mode. After clicking Design, the page just don't render. The display area will show whatever other windows' remaining content if it's covered. Clicking Split doesn't do anything. Source View works fine. The application is not hang. I can still close the tab and reopen it in Source mode.

However, another installation works fine.
(Both PC are Win XP SP2. This problem machine has Symantec Firewall, Norton Ant-virus installed. They have different display card.)

I tried to reinstalled/repair it a lot of time and it doesn't solve the problem.

Make sure Microsoft Web Authoring Component appears in Control Panel. If it does, uninstall it. The go to WCU\WebToolsCore\en-us in VS DVD and run WebToolsCore.exe. The setup does not have UI, give it about 10 minutes to finish. Verify that Web Authoring Component appears in Control Panel. Try go to DV again.

Thanks

Microsoft Web authoring component appears in Control Panel. I tried to remove it and reinstall VWD. But it's the same.

I downloaded VWD from web and don't have VS DVD.

Can you give me version of the fpeditax.dll in Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD and version of MSO.DLL in Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\OFFICE12? Right click on the dll and choose Properties then Details.

The Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD\fpeditax.dll version is

12.0.4518.1066

And Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\OFFICE12\mso.dll version is

12.0.6036.5000

Btw, I downloaded the trial version of Team edition. There is no WCU\WebToolCore but WebDesignerCore.exe.

I un-installed Web Authoring Component and ran WebDesignerCore.exe. The "VS Web Authoring component" reappeared in control but the problem remains. And the version of Fpeditax.dll number is the same.

Just wonder. Could Symantec Client Firewall cause the problem?

Does it happen in plain HTML pages as well? I.e. when you simply open VS, File | New |  HTML page and switch to DV? Also, did you perform complete install or a custom setup?

Thanks

Can you try another scenario:

1. New Web site

2. add a stylesheet

3. Drag stylesheet from solution explorer to <head> element in default.aspx

4. Define a class in the CSS file, such as .class1 { background-color: red; } and save CSS file.

5. type class= in the <body> element attributes

Does intellisense display class1?

Thanks

Hi,

i am having exactly the same kind of problems.
Visual Studio 2005 and VWD 2005 are ok on my Vista Business box. Expression Web too.

But VWD 2008 shows no toolbox-items when a page is open (aspx or html).
The preferences-window does not show options for the HTML-designer
The tabs for split view and design-view are not there.

I had seen this behaviour in the beta-version, so i uninstalled the beta immediately.
The final version has the same issue on my machine.

I tried everything i could think of and tried every solution i could find on the net.
Uninstalled VWD 2008, re-installed.
Uninstalled VWD2008 and VWD 2005 plus all related stuff like MSDN Library...
Reinstalled VWD 2008.
Downloaded the ISO-file and re-installed from that source.
Manually installed WebdesignerCore.exe from the ISO.

But i am stuck now.
The HTML Designer or how it is called just does not get installed.

Suggestions are thet i should check  Microsoft Web Authoring Component is installed.
It is not.

Mikhail suggests to manually install WCU\WebToolsCore\en-us in VS DVD and run WebToolsCore.exe.
Being a VWD user i don't have the VS DVD, but i have used the ISO file which should be the same stuff.
There is nothing like WebToolsCore.exe. In my ISO it is called WebdesignerCore.exe.
At least i presume this the file that Mikhail means. Is that right?

Does anyone have a clue?

Kind regards,

Tjerk

This issue is different. You don't even have Design tab as opposed to having working Source view and Design tab that does not work. In your case VS setup appears to be incorrect. Is markup getting colorized? Does CSS editing work? How's about JS files - do they get colorized?

Thanks

Non-working CSS intellisense means fpeditax.dll does not load for some reason. It is difficult to say why, but let's at least check file existence. Here is what I have on my machine:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD: fpacutl.dll, fpcutl.dll, fpeditax.dll. Digitally signed, correct version 12.0.4518.1066. In C:\Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD\1033 I have fpedsat.dll and fputlsat.dll.

More questions:

- Do you have Office 2007 installed?

- Is there msxml5.dll in windows\system32?

Thanks

All the files exist and the three of them have the same version number.

No, I don't have Office 2007 installed. I download and install the Open xml file converter for Office XP just for testing if it will solve the problem.

I have msxml2, 2r, 3, 3a, 3r, 6, 6r. But *no* msxml5.dll in Windows\system32.

Could Symantec antivirus/cient firewall cause the problem? It has NVidia Quadro NV 285 with newest driver. Some IT software may be installed. Google desktop. Office XP....

Hi Michael,

thank you for your attention.

No, markup is not colorized. CSS editing does not work. JS files the same issue.

JS are not colorised either.

I agree of course that setup is incorrect or incomplete.
Tried it as a regular user with Admin-rights. Tried it as Admin. Tried it with UAC turned off.
Just beatme what is blocking it.

I do have Office 2007 installed as well as MS Expression Web.

Thank you

Mikhail,

I appear to be having the same problems.

Added an aspx file to project opens in source tab. Click on design sort of freezes. I can not switch back to source. However, I can just close the page and open it again (into source view). Also, I can not even click on the split view.

HTML pages have the same problem as aspx pages when switching to design or split view.

I was able to add JS and CSS files. The colors highlight fine and I also have object-context with the drop-down window.

Here are a few things that I have done so far.

  • Uninstalled Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component
  • Installed Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component 12.0.4518.1066 (Product ID: 82503-694-0000007-62682)
    • Located on VS2008ExpressENUX1397868.iso @ Z:\VWDExpress\WCU\WebDesignerCore\WebDesignerCore.EXE
  • Setup environtment variable "PATH" to begin with "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD;"
    • Click "Start"
    • Right-Mouse-Click "My Computer"
    • Click "Properties"
    • Click "Advanced"
    • Click "Environment Variables"
    • Locate "System Variables"
    • Select "PATH"
    • Click "Edit"
    • Type "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD;" at beginning
    • Click "OK"
    • Click "OK" (system does a brief pause)
    • Click "OK"
  • Verified version instaled on disk
    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD
      • FPACUTL.DLL 12.0.4518.1066
      • FPCUTL.DLL 12.0.4518.1066
      • FPEDITAX.DLL 12.0.4518.1066
    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD\1033
      • FPEDSAT.DLL 12.0.4518.1014
      • FPUTLSAT.DLL 12.0.4518.1014
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11
      • MSO.DLL 11.0.8172.0
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12 (Just in case?)
      • MSO.DLL 12.0.6213.1000
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Office10 (Another just in case?)
      • MSO.DLL - missing
    •  c:\Windows\System32
      • msxml2.dll 8.30.9529.0
      • msxml3.dll 8.90.1101.0
      • msxml4.dll 4.20.9848.0
      • msxml5.dll 5.20.1081.0 (was missing - was able to copy from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11)
      • msxml6.dll 6.10.1200.0

I also tried other steps you have suggested. I created a stylesheet, dragged it into the head of my aspx page, added a class, saved and then tried to type out div class="... but nothing appeared in intellisense for the class name.

When I edit the css file, I do see a CSS outline updating as I add more classes.

I have Microsoft Office 2003 installed. However, when ever I try and open an excel, word, visio, or power point document, I am presented with the message - "Microsoft Office [application name] has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application." The network admin hasn't been helpful to me in this scenario, so I installed the microsoft word, excel, and power point viewers. I use google docs to compose new documents and have been debating if I should just install OpenOffice.org. Does Microsoft Office have an effect on this issue with VWD? Would it help if I just uninstalled Microsoft Office completely?

hi lewis, what I did is I uninstall visual web developer and delete vwd  folder in C: program files and install it again. It seems like Microsoft didn't inlclude this to their latest patch. So far I can't find any other  way to solve this unless you uninstall it and delete it's folder in drive C.

This does not help.

  • Uninstalled VWD from add/remove programs
  • Deleted C:\Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools folder.
  • I installed VWD from the DVD
    • web designer tools folder did not exist afterwards.
  • Ran Z:\VWDExpress\WCU\WebDesignerCore\WebDesignerCore.exe
  • Confirmed folder now exists for Web Designer Tools
  • Ran VWD
  • Open aspx file
  • Click "Design" tab
  • Program never does anything ...

Do you have any other suggestions?

I had the same issue ... finally got to the bottom of it:

Within my environment path variable I had MS office path defined as follows:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10

This contains an old version of fpcutl.dll, which VWD ends up using.

To solve the problem add C:\Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD to the start of your path variable.

Unfortunatly that doesn't work. That was one of the original things that I tried before I uninstalled and then reinstalled VWD. I'm looking now and my path reads as:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD;C:\Program Files\CA\Dcs\DMScripting\;C:\Program Files\CA\DCS\CAWIN\;C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\PROGRA~1\CA\ETRUST~1;c:\ut\gen;C:\Program Files\GnuWin32\bin;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\;C:\PROGRA~1\CA\SHARED~1\SCANEN~1;C:\SYSMGT\TNGSD\BIN;C:\SYSMGT\TNGAM\AGENTS

Yes, designer is Office 2007 component. However, it does not require Office 2007. Perhaps the message that Office 2003 is not installed for the current user is indication of the problem. Did you try uninstalling or at least repairing Office 2003 so its applications start normally? Versions of binaries seem to be OK.

Thanks

I ran the installer and tried the following:

  • Add or Remove Features
    • Left all options checkd
  • Reinstall or Repair
    • Ran Reinstall (and rebooted)
    • Ran Repair

The only thing that I haven't tried yet is uninstalling.

I don't know if this helps. I can close the pages if they are design mode. however, if I close VWD afterwards, it crashes with the following error signature.

AppName: vwdexpress.exe      AppVer: 9.0.21022.8     AppStamp:47316132
ModName: mfc80u.dll      ModVer: 8.0.50727.762      ModStamp:45713438

You don't have to uninstall Office. Since you removed it anyway, try this:

1. Uninstall Microsoft Web Authoring Component in control Panel.

2. Install Office

3. Install Web autoring Component from WCU\WebToolsCore folder on the DVD by running WebDesignerCore.exe (~5 minutes to run, no UI). You may have to download CD image.

4. Make sure Office not on the path as indicated above.

I seem to be having the same sort of problem with VS 2008 Pro on Server 2003 with Office 2007 and WSS 3.0.  And I've tried VS2008 Pro on Vista Business with Office 2007.

I have noticed that that if I drag a control from the toolbox onto the design surface and only edit it in the properties pane it is visible and stays visible.  If I edit the source in any way the control will disappear even after syncing.  If I drag a control into the source view it is never visible whatever I do.  The controls all appear fine if the code is built and run.

I tried everything short of uninstalling and reinstalling VS (not that this seems to be a reliable fix) and nothig is helping.  Any news on a proper fix for this bug?

Well I hate to tell you this, but I was running the same installation and the only way I was able to resolve it was to uninstall both Office and Visual Studio and then do a reinstall of both. I'm not sure what exactly was causing the issue but I haven't had the problem since. It took half the day to install VS again with all my Ajax and UI components but it was well worth it.

Thanks for the quick reply but bother!  I was hoping to avoid uninstalling VS because it took ages to install all the extensions, sdk's, etc, etc the first time!  And I had created a Virtual Image of this machine and passed it round the office.  They won't be thanking me now!

In most cases you will find all you need is in VWD 2008, If you install SP1 then you can compile class libraries now as well, so less need for c#2008.
