switching from system.web.mail to system.net.mail

I have been converting my code from system.web.mail to system.net.mail.  I have been able to convert the to, from, cc, and message body to the new format easily but...my question is

how do i convert this into system.net.mail format?

SmtpMail.SmtpServer = "server";
                SmtpMail.Send(mail);

Would this be the solution?
SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient("server");
                client.Send(mail);

Here's a full example of how to perform a System.Net.Mail message send. :)

Dim

smtpClient As New SmtpClient("IP or DNS Name")

Dim mailmessage As New MailMessage

mailmessage.From =

New MailAddress(me@mail.com)

If CheckBox1.Checked = True Then

mailmessage.To.Add(TextBox2.Text) ' This is to allow them to check a box to receive a copy of their webform submission.

End If

mailmessage.IsBodyHtml =

True

mailmessage.To.Add(

you@mail.com)

mailmessage.Subject =

"this subject is open to be anything"

mailmessage.Body = "put anything you want in the body, or designate a class to read it from an html file"

smtpClient.Credentials = New NetworkCredential("username@mail.com", "password")

Try

smtpClient.Send(mailmessage)

Me.Session("mailsent") = True  ' Make a decision based on this session, so they cant resubmit the form again in the same session

Catch ex As Exception

Response.redirect("mailsent.aspx")

Am I missing something here?

MailMessage msg = new MailMessage();

 msg.To.Add(new MailAddress(address1));
msg.CC.Add(new MailAddress(address2));

msg.From = (new MailAddress(address3));
msg.Subject = "Evaluation Notice";
msg.Body = "message";
SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient("myIP");

I'm guessing you need to authenticate with your SMTP server.

I am sorry I forgot to thank you for your first reply, how would I authenticate?  I am very new to smtp in general.  Thanks again.

smtpClient.Credentials = New NetworkCredential("username@mail.com", "password")

If your sending using your own mail account, then this is probably the same thing you log into the server as in your outlook / outlook express client, or your webmail client.

The problem is not the port number because when I tried changing it to a different value I got a failure to connect.  When I use the correct port value I get this exception

System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: Command not implemented. The server response was: at System.Net.Mail.SmtpConnection.GetConnection(String host, Int32 port) at System.Net.Mail.SmtpTransport.GetConnection(String host, Int32 port) at System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient.GetConnection() at System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient.Send(MailMessage message) at STAIRSdev.asst_cord.eval_asgnmt.btnSendEmail2(Object sender, EventArgs e) in C:\Documents and Settings\Buff Bufferman\Desktop\Test\asst_cord\eval_asgnmt.aspx.cs:line 3636

line 3636 is client.send(msg);
Any help would be much appreciated.

Okay, I tried that and here is the error I got when compiled.

Error 1 The type or namespace name 'NetworkCredential' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) N:\Inetpub\wwwroot\contact.aspx.cs 33 37 N:\Inetpub\wwwroot\

Help is appreciated.

Hi mrChucky

NetworkCredential is part of the System.Net namespace, you have two options to reference it

Imports System.Net

or if you dont need the entire namespace

smtpClient.Credentials = New System.Net.NetworkCredential()

I can only guess at the problem - because it's your mail server, and it's settings that are returning the error at this point, your code is running fine.

1.) You're trying to specify a different FROM address, than your actually logging in as

2.) Your mail server is locked down, to check the ip or subnet that email is being sent from, and your application, when it's running...isnt on it

There really isnt anything we can do for you at this point - your going to have to get with the people that administer your email server and work it out.

Okay, below are my code for sending email form. I used the Wizard control to create my form.

protected void wrdContact_FinishButtonClick(object sender, WizardNavigationEventArgs e)

Okay, I deleted the wizard and just create a simple table with fields and a submit button. Once the button is clicked, the code above is executed except instead of "protected void wrdContact_FinishButtonClick(object sender, WizardNavigationEventArgs e)", it's called "protected void btnSubmit_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)" and I still recieved the same error. So what's going on here? Ther is no view state at all, at least I thought so.

 And oh, it works on my development server.

Any other ideas why this is happening when it's only a simple form with no ASP.NET controls at all. I found out from my web space host that their servers are not cluster and it's single only. So where could the problem be? It works fine on my development machine at home. This problem only happens when I uploaded to my web space.

I'm not sure what clustering has to do with it.  I'm guessing, plain and simple - that you are using your ISP's mail account (probably DSL or Cable Modem) to send your email (from your development machine).  Your ISP knows when a connection to it's mail servers is being established from inside it's own network, and when a connection is being established outside it's network.

Your web host - unless it's your ISP and it resides in the same segment that allows connection to the mail server...isn't allowed to access your email server for sending.

This is generally known as Relay protection.

Your application is working fine - the error message you posted shows that it's doing everything just the way it should.  It's your email server when it tries to send the message that is kicking it back.  Only your EMAIL SERVER administrator can answer why.

Many thanks for the response. I don't think it is the mail server problem this time with the followin error:

Server Error in '/' Application.

Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster.

I believed this is something different and I'm not sure where to go about troubleshooting thiss error message. I already opened another thread jst for that error message. But no one seems to know what it is.

 Again, thanks fo your insight.

Okay, I found that code below causes this error:

MailMessage NetMail = new MailMessage();
SmtpClient MailClient = new SmtpClient();
NetworkCredential TheseCredentials = new NetworkCredential(ThisUsername, ThisPassword);

If I comment it out then I do not have the error.

No, I contacted lunarpages and their mail server does require authentication. Those codes are from them but I later found out that at least those line causes the error stated above. They're unable to help me because they still believed that it's my code and not something in their mail server. How do I make sure that is not the code that is the source of the problem? Another word, how do I do more trouble shooting on this?

Okay, this frustrate me alot. The page now suddently does not display the error but the page doesn ot send out the email to the recipeint address. Below are my most current codes of the button submit and the getBody methods.

Okay, I just found something strange happned too. If the domain of the from field is set to @myCompany.com then it works but if the from field is from someone else using other domain names then it's not working. The code below is the line I'm talking about.

string ThisSender = txtEmail.Text;

Any idea why this is happening?

Again, you are running into issues with the email server imposing rules.

Imagine if I were able to connect to any email server and specify that I wanted to send email fromme@whoever.com.  HUGE security hole.

For Corporate or Enterprise installations, they host their own mail server most of the time - so that they can control the variables.

For individual or small company based solutions.  They sign up with a hosting company that provides an email address (that matches their domain name) that they can send from, and receive mail at.
