I'm trying to install VS 2008 but the .net 3.5 framework install fails. I've tried installing .net 3.5 on it's own but it fails. It produces this error Message:

[11/21/07,10:42:01] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 was not attempted to be installed.I am assuming there is a problem with my machine since it's two different installs fail. I'm Running XP Pro SP2 with the latest windows updates, .net 1.1, .net 2 Sp1. I haven't installed VS 2008 or .net 3.5 beta on this machine. I've also tried installing .net 3.0 through windows update but that fails as well.
Hopefully someone can help me out there, thanks.

1603 is a very generic installer failure. This blog article might help you diagnose it:

Kevin,
Thanks for the link. I am still running into the same issues despite following his advice. So far everything I've tried has failed to come up with a solution. I guess I'll post on the msdn forums and see if anyone there can help. My other option is to re-install xp on my machine but I don't have time for that now.
thanks
Gary

Hi, I met same problems with you yesterday on window server 2003 R2. But today, I installed dotnet3.5 on it successfully today.
The procedures are:
- uninstall IIS service and related components.
- reinstall IIS server and asp.net etc.
- install dotnet3.5 successfully today.
Hopefully, this would help you.
regards,
F.Chen

That worked!!! Many, many thanks. I'm not a member here, but created an account just to make sure others might see that you're onto something, rather than just another suggestion dangling in the air without resolution. Thanks again- --Mike--fchen:

Found a quicker and easier way for me anyways to do it.
just stop the World Wide Web SERVICE...
Either open IIS and try to stop it from there, or goto My Computer. Right CLick. Manage. Services. Then what should be the last or close to last service named World Wide Web Publishing.
Enjoy.

This may be totally off-base for your situation, but I encountered the 1603 error code (noted to be a very generic error) while trying to install AutoDesk Revit 2010 for a client. After trying the "full" redistributable packages of .NET 3.5 and .NET 3.5 SP1 from download.microsoft.com, with the same sort of errors, I checked the system event log on the workstation having the problem (WinXP Pro SP2 in an Active Directory environment). The error logged there mentioned something about a lack of permissions for a particular DLL file in the path C:\PROGRAM FILES\REFERENCE ASSEMBLIES\... [truncated]. I looked at Security permissions and found that Users did not have full permissions, and that the Administrator account (local or AD) had absolutely no permissions (not even READ permissions) on that folder or sub-folders and files. Further, I checked the permissions level for the Administrator account and found that, for some reason, the Administrator account on this workstation was not a member of the Administrators group, but was in the "Debugger" group.
My shotgun approach was to reset group for Administrator account to "Administrators," and to give the Administrator account full rights to the folder structure mentioned in the event log.
Hope that's helpful to someone.
