One important difference is that you are able to separate the design of a web site from the code. This makes for ease of maintainablity and much more structured applications. If you ever worked with classic ASP the code-behind is a great invention.

Code Behind vs. Non-Code Behind
If you do not use Code Behind will the only thing you need is the .aspx file??? What is the benefit of code behind? I want to know the benefits.Moojjoo Õ¿Õ http://www.mmwebs.comhttp://moojjoo.blogspot.com/ The reason I ask about benefits is because everybook or place I read about ASP.net they do not, I repeat "DO NOT use CODE BEHIND" Even my MICROSOFT ASP.NET Step by Step book does not use it.Moojjoo Õ¿Õ http://www.mmwebs.comhttp://moojjoo.blogspot.com/ From a runtime perspective there is very little difference, howev...

code behind vs non code behind
hi,How do I gain access to server objects and events when I am using code behind? When I am using code behind in C#, I do not have access to server objects & events on my drop down list. However, when I do not use code behind, I have access to server objects & events on my drop down list.  Thanks.  You always have access to server controls from code-behind.  If your dropdownlist ID="DDL1", you can access it using Me.DDL1Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.T...

what about the code-behind (code behind)
One MAJOR difference between AJAX.NET and Atlas.NET seems to be that AJAX.NET is able to expose methods in your codebehind to the client. Why doesn't Atlas do this? Or am I mistaken? With AJAX.NET it's just a simple line or two:  Ajax.Utility.RegisterTypeForAjax(GetType(myClass)) <Ajax.AjaxMethod()>Public Function myFunction PLEASE tell me Atlas has something comparable to this. I don't have the time to rewrite all my code-behind methods in javascript or atlas script. All you need to do in Atlas to expose a method on your page (or its code behind class) is to put a [WebMet...

Code Behind or not Code Behind
Ok i am confuse now.... A lot of books are showing pages without code behind (the code is integrated in the .aspx) Is it better to use the code behind or not. Is there any difference between using VB.NET or C#.NET except for the code synthax. Thank you and come again. A lot of samples show inline code just for simplicity.. i personally use code-behind because I like to seperate my code from presentation. As for VB.NET or C#, its your preference.. there is no difference really when its all said and done. From a purely mathematical sense, having everything in a single file would s...

Code Behind in VS.NET?
I have heard from a few people here that VS.NET supports Code Behind, but I guess Im having a tough time finding that. I started out learning ASP.net in Web Matrix, and a book that walked me through the basics. The book was written however, for the previous version of WebMatrix which had several really nice capabilities, that were taken out in the updated version. Because of this, I decided to install VS.net. For some reason, ever since I installed VS.net, Web Matrix doesnt work exactly right any more. After reading around on some forums I have gathered that the two are incompatible to...

To Code Behind or Not Code Behind, That is the Question...
I have been working in ASP.Net 1.0 for several years.  I have just begun using 2.0 and I am really liking it. I understand how to create pages with code in the page and code behind the page.  I'm just not clear on what is considered the preferred method. I am about to start a new application and I would like to do it the recommended way. Are there any opinions on this already, something I should be reading? Thanks a lot,Chris Hi,  Generally, code behind, or code behind files are recommended, as they make applications easier to debug and rework.  I guess that the thi...

How do you code yours? Design Time or Code Behind (.net 2.0)?
What’s your preferred method when coding?   I have noticed in a lot of books and even the Quick start Tutorials section of the site they use Design Time examples using Drag and Drop examples with visual studio. Surely having code in your .aspx file such as asp:ObjectDataSource is not the best method. Surley the best method is to use classes with code behind?   Your comments would be very much appreciated.   Thanks   WD ThanksWDRocket Whois - http://www.rocketwhois.co.uk/ IMO, it depends on what you are doing. If you are creating one web form or a very small sit...

Inline Coding (i.e. no Code-behind) and Wilson Pages (.Net 1.1)
Hi, I'm developing a personal web site and planning on hosting it on Brinkster, but Brinkster does not allow codebehind or using Dlls (from what I understand). But I would still like to use Wilson Master Pages, if possible.  I downloaded the free source code from the Wilson Master Pages website, but I'm not an advanced enough .Net programmer to firgure out how to use the source code using inline code.  Normally, you would use something like:<%@ Register TagPrefix="Wilson" Assembly="WilsonMasterPages" Namespace="Wilson.MasterPages" %>  on your templated pages...

Actually i made a page. It is now a .aspx file, a .aspx.vb and a .aspx.resx file. I also made a new class in a VB file. when i built the project i found the dll in the bin folder. I uploaded the stuff onto the web page (all three, global.asax, web.config) and the dll into the bin folder of my websites root, but it doesnt work. Setting width for .net controls in code(.aspx) page using function call in code behind..
Hi,  Currently I am trying to set the width of the asp.net Table as follows. <asp:Table width="<%=GetWidth()%>" >   and code behind protected Unit GetWidth() { return Unit.Percentage(50); }     It's not working. I know that it works if I set the width complete on some page event(like page_load) of code behind....   Is there a way to maintain the same syntax like calling code behind function in design page...i.e. calling function of .aspx.cs in .aspx page and assign the width as shown above.   Thanks and regards, Giridhar...

Code Inline Vs Code Behind
I recently started learning ASp.net and coming from a php background a tend to favor code inline as oppose to code code behind. But most professional articles are using code behind which indicates that it is the insdutry standard. I am really not sure which one would be more beneficial to me here. Please let me know your guys's opinion on this. Should i learn code inline first and then code behind or go straight to code behind?  I have to say so far code inline appears easier to understand, but code behind makes sense (separating logic from the User interface). Also, would you...

what is in-line code vs code-behind?
I hear these terms thrown around alot but cannot find a definition. I am using webmatrix.(is it a step down from Dominatrix?) "In-line" code is classic asp-like server side scripting placed in the aspx file iteself.Code-behind is seperate class files for the aspx / ascx files which get compiled along with the aspx page. Hope this helpsSam CromerSenior .NET Developer the code behind is the code that you write behind the aspx file it will be aspx.vb or cs  the inline code where you place the code in the HTML file for the page......!!! what is better ??? ....... it is better to use inl...

Code Blocks vs. Code Behind
I'm currently building an ASP.Net MVC demo for our company, with the goal to win them over that it is a feasible pattern/framework for us to use.  One thing I'm struggling with is the benefits and drawbacks to to using code blocks, <% %>, to fill the page with data, create forms, etc., versus using server controls and filling their values in the code behind. I know this is a loaded question, but any argument for or against would be welcomed. Hey! I would like someone to answer this as well!  To me adding inline scripting blocks (<%%>) reminds me of classic a...

Code Behind vs Code Seperation
The pre-whidbey code-behind model used inheritance which had plusses and minuses from a development perspective. The new model uses partial classes for web environments. After some experimenting with Whidbey I'm becoming somewhat anxious as to the new programming model. It seems that I will be unable to seperate logic completely from user interface, as with the current model, I can build the assembly for the application and deploy it, and leave the aspx files seperate from the assembly. This allows us to change the user interface after deployment, or provide quick hotfixes by overrid...

inline code vs code-behind
Could someone please tell me how I would do the following with "code-behind" instead of using inline code as I have done below? <table> <tr><td>whatever</td></tr> <% If IsAllowed("00100000") = True Then Response.Write( "<tr><td>more text</td></tr>") %> </table> in aspx page: <asp:Table> <asp:TableRow ID="moreText"> <asp:TableCell> more text </asp:TableCell> </asp:TableRow> </asp:Table> in code ...

Page Code VS Code Behind
Is there a way to turn-off code behind for asp.net and write script on .aspx altogether? Regards: Waqas Mahmood Khan PakistaneMale ;) It's up to you. Simply don't use code behind if you don't want it. VS.NET will automatically create code behind files for you. It is a better way to organise your code, although the downside is that you must rebuild more often. Keith PattonTechnical Director Ethical Media http://www.ethicalmedia.com You can use Asp.Net Web Matrix Right now , Visual Studio standard is to use code-behind. I've gotten used to it, and it does help seperat...

inline code vs code behind
does inline code get compile in the aspx page? if does, is there any performance advantage between code behind and inline code? Thanks. ASPX pages get compiled the first time they are hit, regardless of whether there is code-behind or not. There is no performance advantage to code-behind, it is all about "better" design and maintenance. Thanks, Paul Wilson, ASPInsider, MC**For the best .NET code, examples, and tools, visit:WilsonDotNet.com, WilsonWebPortal.com, ORMapper.net thanks for your comment. "It is all about better design and maintenance", I will disagree with you on that statement. "Performance is #1 on my list", without it, no customer will satisfy and no matter how easy the code is to maintenance or how good design is, remember customer never see that, they only see what's on the screen not on the backend of design. But for one thing I will agree that ASP.NET definitely is lot more cleaner from presentation and logic since they are separated. It is only good for the developer. But does performance gain if using ASP.NET? that I do have a big question and it is very big issue. My classic asp work much faster than ASP.Net even though the code is hard to manager but I rather have good performance than anything else. Bad performance chase the customer away! Hopefully every developer know this and especially the ASP.NET team. Recently I intermingle script with html and it actually really gain performance but th...

VS.NET makes automatic but invisible change to code behind file ...
I have designed an ASP.NET page in VS.NET 2003 Enterprise Architect using C# that dynamically loads user controls on the page. When I make a change to an .ASCX file in HTML view using the property window, like setting the "align" property for a <table> tag, it seems to automatically initiate a change in the code behind file (an asterisk instantly appears next to the .ASCX.CS file name) but none of the code has changed! If I continue and build (or rebuild) the project, that user control no longer functions. If I go to the ASCX.CS file and hit Ctrl-Z I get a Microsoft Developme...
