Problem: couldn't cancel ODBC statement to SQLServer on SUN Solaris

Hello,
I'm running a ODBC based programm (Visual Basic DAO) against a Sybase
SQLServer 11.0.2 on SUN SOLARIS 2.5.1. The ODBC driver is the original
driver from Sybase. The problem is that a cancel-statement didn't work.
It seems that the cancel-statement didn't reach the SQLServer and the
programm waits for a result that never come. So the programm hang. (A
similar problem occurs when I connect via an 4.9-client like isql/w from
Microsoft). I found out that the problem relates to the urgent attention
signal. SQL-Server works with in-band-attention signal or with
out-of-band-data (OOBD) RFC 793. Solaris work per default with OOBD RFC
1122. I didn't know exactly what kind of attention signal ODBC use.
I have no problems when I' connection to SQLServer running on HP server
with HP-UX 10.10. HP-UX understands RFC 793.

Does anyone know a solution for this problem!

Thanks Wolfgang Kunk

Hi Wolfgang

I assume you are running your ODBC app on a win / win'95 / NT machine
What version of open client have you got loaded on this machine ???
Are you editing entries in a win.ini or sql.ini file ???

If you are using open client 10.x or greater then you should not be
having this problem.

Try adding the ,Urgent statement in your ini file.
This is for tcpip.
ie SERVERNAME = logical servername or ip address, netlib driver, port,
Urgent
SYBASE = 191.67.81.2, wdbwsktc, 5000, Urgent

Hi Matt,
thanks for your answer. Here are the additional information:
1. Our client machines running under Win 95 or Win NT 4.0.
2. We are using Open Client 10.0.4
3. I have the following entry in SQL.INI for the SQLServer LANCIA wich
is running on the SUN-Server 'medusa'
    [LANCIA]
        win3_query=WNLWNSCK,medusa,3024
        query=NLWNSCK,medusa,3024
4. I have the following entry in WIN.INI
    LANCIA=wdbwsktc,medusa, 3024, urgent

Which entry is nessasary for a ODBC connection, the entry in SQL.INI or
the entry in WIN.INI ?

Wolfgang,
You don't need an entry at all in WIN.INI for any version
of Open Client above 4.x. This means that if you have
Open Client 10 running and you are running 32-bit, all entries
in the [SQLSERVER] section of WIN.INI are not used.

You cannot add ",URGENT" to SQL.INI - it is not supported.

However, you may need to add an ODBC "workaround" in the
ODBC.INI file to force use of the ct_cancel with the ATTENTION
flag. I am not aware of the specific workaround that you
may need, but in the past, people have had to add a line to
their ODBC.INI under the particular datasource(s) of

34Cancel=yes

However, this is probably an issue with the version of the
ODBC driver you are using. I'd log a case with Sybase Tech
Support and have them review all the other customer cases
dealing with this topic. Yes, you have the 10.0.4 of Open
Client, and that's the latest revision on 10.0.x but you
may need a newer ODBC driver either directly from Intersolv
or Sybase - and Tech Support should be able to help you
determine if the latest EBF of the ODBC driver is right for
you for this problem.

Has anyone on this list had experience running an SQL Server (Or
Adaptive Server) on the same UNIX box a an Oracle instance? If so,
where there any problems, issues?

	Apart from Oracle being a pig and a resource hog, no, not
	really. You can control each of their use of shared memory,
	but you can't control their processes' use of physical
	memory and since Oracle runs more processes it will consume
	more memory. Oracle will also chew up the OS buffer caches
	(which, luckily, Sybase doesn't ordinarily use), but if you
	can control that thru your OS you can dedicate more to shared
	memory. If you have an SMP system, you can try restricting
	processes to processors (if supported by the OS) and dedicate
	seperate IO subsystems to each database server to avoid
	device contention issues.
