upgrade 11.0.2.2 to 11.5.1 questions....

Our company plans on migrating from our 11.0.2.2 database on NT 3.51 to
a new server running NT 4.0 and 11.5.1. What will be necessary for the
migration? Can I simply load 11.5.1 on the new server, load the logins,
create the databases 'for load,' and restore the database dumps from
11.0.2?

Thanks,
Patrick Bennett

Patrick,
Yes, essentially, you can do that. You might want to just
install 11.0.2.2 over on NT 4.0 and get it running as it is today.
You can install a basic server (just master/sybsystemprocs), then
move the device files over to it and boot it. Then, run 11.5.1
installation and do the upgrade during the installation.

The latest EBF for 11.5.1 on NT is EBF 8075 - you can install
that after the install/upgrade to the base 11.5.1. Ask Sybase
Tech Support/Customer Services for that EBF to be sent to you on CD.

I thought about doing that, but then I came to my senses. ;>
I took 11.5.1 home to test the upgrade process on a development machine and it
was anything but smooth. Maybe the upgrade/installation problems with 11.5.1
are fixed now, but it had tons of problems w/ bombing out during the upgrade
without saying why [ended up being sizes of certain databases and database
options].
If I did do what you're saying - just installing a basic server with
master/sybsystemprocs - how could I just move the device files over? The
devices would still have to be inserted/created to be set up within master.
The logins would also have to be re-inserted... It doesn't seem like it would
save me much time overall.

Thanks - I only had 8037... I'll download 8075 when I get a chance...

P.S. It would be nice if Sybase would set up a list-server we could subscribe
to which informed us of new EBFs (for ASE and Open/Client).

Patrick,
You said that you had issues during the upgrade (bombing).
Is your server setup with case insensitive sort order? If so,
that might be an issue for you - there was a known problem with
the NT upgrade program that is fixed (but not in 11.5.1 GA) which
caused upgrades to bomb if the server was case insensitive.
Also, issues due to space within DBs (see below) cause upgrades to fail.
What I would do is to first try to do the upgrade via the
standard methods after checking for space issues mentioned below.
Or, look through the following steps to do a manual upgrade.

Some ideas for manual upgrade on a new machine:

Let's say your original server's master database file
was: C:\SQL\DATA\MASTER.DAT on 11.0.3.2. and subsequent files
were also in C:\SQL\DATA. You could essentially do a 11.5.1
installation on machine B with C:\SQL\DATA\MASTER.DAT and
other files in the same locations as on A.

Then, when you move device files over, also move the master
database device and sybsystemprocs device. So, you'd be copying
all device files to the exact same directory on the new machine.
When you start 11.5.1, you then will get a message in the
errorlog saying that the server was started against a master
device of a different version. No problem there - that's normal
during upgrade. Once 11.5.1 is started, you need to run the
upgrade program. You do the following:
Get a command prompt (I just do "Start/Run" enter "CMD" and run it
that way).
CD into the %SYBASE%\upgrade directory
make sure the environment variable is set to the servername:
SET DSQUERY=your_servername
run UPGRADE.EXE
Once done, use isql and run instmstr in from the %SYBASE%\scripts
directory. such as: isql -Usa -Pxxxx -iinstmstr -oinstmstr.out

** Before you run upgrade, be sure it is the same version as the
** SQLSRVR.EXE that you have. Run UPGRADE -v and SQLSRVR -v to
** verify the version of it. If you installed the whole 11.5.1 off
** of the CD, then you're fine. Even if you have 8037 for 11.5.1,
** just make sure the major number of both are 11.5.1.

That should do it.

Errors that might affect an upgrade in place:
- Not enough space in sybsystemprocs to proceed
- Not enough space in each database (all dbs need 2MB of free space
to be run through the upgrade program
- DBs need to have their options turned off before upgrade.
Only one on should be "select into" for tempdb.

There is a document for migration out on the Sybase sybooks
and techinfo web sites
http://sybooks.sybase.com and http:/techinfo.sybase.com

Yes, it is. I despise case-sensitive servers.

So where is the 'fixed' version?

> Also, issues due to space within DBs (see below) cause upgrades to fail.

That's one of the reasons I'd almost prefer to install cleanly and restore the
user-databases only. I'd prefer to have a decent sized master, and sybsystemprocs
right off the bat instead of having to increase their size in our current
installation and end up master device allocations all over the place. I see it as a
way to clean up some of the mess that our databases have become over the years of
constant growth.

I may still try to follow your steps and upgrade more or less 'in-place.'
Thanks for the information John.

Patrick,
I'd go with a 100MB master and sybsystemprocs devices.
I'd also go with a 100MB sized sybsystemprocs DB. That way,
you don't have to keep expanding it with every upgrade.
The master database is still small, but the upgrade will expand
it by 2MB usually.

The fix for the upgrade program is probably available via
Sybase Tech Support. They understand the issue being that
they seemed not to have done good testing with the upgrade
process on case insensitive servers. Oh well. Anyway, you
can either do the fresh install and load databases and then
just perform an ONLINE DATABASE <dbname> command after loading
to upgrade. Or, go with the steps I mentioned in the other
posting I gave you.
