Question on migrating from 11.0.2.2 to 11.5

Hi-

I am trying to migrate from 11.0.2.2 running on AIX 4.1.3 to 11.5
running on AIX 4.3. I have had real problems performing Sybase upgrades
before so I have the luxury this time of having a seperate AIX 4.3 to
test this migration on. As I understand from the docs I should be able
to load a dump from my 11.0.2.2 server and load it directly into 11.5.

This seems to have worked accept for the method that it allocated
devices. I did not exactly match each allocation one for whe creating
the database but the total data and log sizes matched exactly. Hoping
to consolidate the data partitions for easier management. See the
portions of sp_helpdb that I have included below.

11.0.2.2 (orignal machine)

 syb_log1 90.0 MB log only 92096
 syb_user1 200.0 MB data only 19728
 syb_user1 800.0 MB data only 0

11.5 (new machine after the load database)

 log_disk1 90.0 MB log only 92160
 user_disk1 310.0 MB data only 132640
 user_disk1 800.0 MB data only 0
 user_disk1 90.0 MB log only 92096

*** notice the two log partitions and the larger total allocation to the
data partitions.

When I onlined the database SQL commands seem to run just fine, but this
does not make sense. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

Load database will not make a database larger. The db that you loaded
the dump into appears to be larger below. Load database will however
try to cleanup up the segmap in the target database.

I don't see an issue below based on your description.

Thanks for the reply Lance. Looking into this further I now see that
there is nothing wrong with the output below. I need to learn how to
move a consoldidate seqmaps based on output of sysusages. My ultimate
goal was to take the original 800MB and 200MB data partitions and merge
them into one partition with my 90MB log partition staying the same. Is
this possible? My database is getting ready to start growing quite
rapidly, so I would like to maintain as few partitions as possble, so
when I migrate to 11.5 on a new server things should go smoother. Is
there a flaw in what I am trying to do?

Thanks,
Brian

Yes, it is possible, by direct updates of sysusages
under very specific conditions.

If two rows in sysusages (ordered by lstart) have the same
dbid and the same segmap, and the vstart value for the
second row equals the vstart + size of the row before it,
you can update the size of the size of the
second row to the size of the first row, then delete the second row.

Example:

 dbid segmap lstart size vstart
 ------ ----------- ----------- ----------- -----------
      6 7 0 1024 50331648
      6 7 1024 1024 50332672
      6 7 2048 1024 67108864
      6 7 3072 1024 67109888

This is equivalent to

 ------ ----------- ----------- ----------- -----------
      6 7 0 2048 50331648
      6 7 2048 2048 67108864

Just be very sure you have your math right!

You have to maintain the 1-to-1 mapping of logical page numbers
to virtual page numbers.

Our company plans on migrating from our 11.0.2.2 database on NT 3.51 to a new server running NT 4.0 and 11.5.1. What will be necessary for the migration? Can I simply load 11.5.1 on the new server, load the logins, create the databases 'for load,' and restore the database dumps from 11.0.2? Thanks, Patrick Bennett Patrick, Yes, essentially, you can do that. You might want to just install 11.0.2.2 over on NT 4.0 and get it running as it is today. You can install a basic server (just master/sybsystemprocs), then move the device files over to it and boot it. Then, ru...
