Printing >1 page of text in a report

Hi!

I have made similar posts without success, and am now looking for basic
advice as we are spinning our wheels on this one.

We have a PB 6.5 report with about half a page of single line data
fields, followed by a large text display area occupying the entire
bottom half. The data source for this text needs to be large - in
excess of 5,000 characters - and therefore "overflows" the 1st page.

However we try to display the text (columns, nested report, nested in a
composite..), PB does not page break within the text properly. A
variety of problems occur - chopping text, skipping parts of the page -
but mostly it seems PB wants to treat the text as a unit - bumping the
whole thing to a second page instead of breaking the text.

Can anyone thoroughly advise on: data storage (Oracle long datatype?),
report techniques, workarounds - we are stumped! RTF has been proposed
- would that help at least with the page breaks? What about techniques
to manually force page breaks - how would we know when they were
needed? Our last resort is to parse the text line-by-line into a
temporary table then display the lines in a group.

Help!

If I can give you one piece of advice.. stay away from the RTF stuff. It is
a major pain up the backside. We wish we weren't using it. Our application
was in need of using special characters and we decided to use RTF ans use
different fonts etc. We now wish that we had just got a custom font!

Stephen here,

We got the data dumped into an Oracle long column in a temp table. We
placed the column in the detail of a nested report, and that did the trick!
Not perfect, as we lost the ability to enclose the whole report in a
rectangle (to mimic a form), but it's close.

Now we are looking to customize the header on the base report - resizing for
these subsequent pages created by the nested report - any ideas?

still trying,

Stephen

Hi, Acacio here,
Are you using trail the footer for the first half of the report ?
What about slide all above or slide up ? You can find in the properties
folder.
Try these advices... Could be work...

Stephen again,

Well, my enthusiasm was a bit premature. It turns out in testing that the
approach fails/degrades when the data overflows to 3 or more pages. Also, we
get degraded results when a subsequent nested report is added to the base
directly below our text report. Finally, we had to abandon headers and footers
in our nested reports, and go to great lengths to hide/display custom text in
the base headers and footers keying off page number.

To review our report requirement:
page 1 - top half, numerous small data columns (dates, IDs, etc)
page 1 - bottom half - begin long text display (up to 28K characters)
page 2, 3, etc - long text continued (with custom headers, footers)
last page - more small data columns.

We have now seen everything:
    1. Footers disappearing
    2. Headers disappearing
    3. Blank pages after long text
    4. Nested report text encroaching on base header and footer
    5. Lines chopped - only half displayed on screen, but print out OK
    6. WYSWYG failing - text will not display on screen, but will print out
(autosize releated)
    7. WYSWYG II - print preview page breaks not matching print out

We even saw PB print the last page over the top of the first extra text page!!

At this point, we really feel that we are pushing PB report capabilities - is
our approach all wet or is support for our text-intensive report just not
there??

Report with text spanning >1 page
Hi! Using PB6.5. We have a record with several character columns used to store large amounts of text (approx 4-30K characters). Our columns are 2k, and can have 2+ rows. About halfway down page 1 of our report, we need to display the text columns consecutively down the page, possibly overflowing to 2nd & even 3rd pages. Then we have another nested report to start on a new page after the text. We have tried many approaches - nested, composite, etc - but cannot get the text to "page break" properly. Logically, we want the text in one or more nested reports, sinc...

Printing > 1 page of text object.
Hello, I am having a problem with the datawindow on text fields that are greater than 1 page. Here is the layout of my datawindow. Each id must be printed on a separate page. The header, body and comments on the 1st id looks great. But the comments roll over to the next page. The next page is in the format.
