Upgrading from ASE 12.5.x to ASE 15.0.2 - Methods

Hello all,

I have been writing some checklists regarding the Upgrade from ASE12.5.x
version to ASE15.0.2 version, and I have to cover some different sceneries.

I would like to confirm with you guys, If my thoughts are correct
regarding the methods for each situation, and if not, would like some advice
from you please. Correct me please if I am wrong.

Follow the sceneries and the possible methods for each situation that I need
to cover:

A) Migrating from ASE 12.5.x 32-bit to ASE 15.0.2 64-bit version of
Adaptive Server Enterprise (in this case the page size won't be changed)

Method 1) Dump and load:

              Create a 64-bit Adaptive Server

Dump the databases on the 32-bit server

Load the databases to the 64-bit server

Method 2) BCP data out and in strategy

              Create a 64-bit Adaptive Server

Create devices, databases, and tables on the 64-bit server

bcp out on 32-bit server and bcp in on 64-bit server to bulk
copy data into tables

Method 3) Replacing the binary

Can I use this method if I am migratin from ASE 12.5.x? or Should
is use this method if the 32-bit server is already

          a version 15.0.x?

B) Upgrading from ASE 12.5.x 2k to ASE 15.0.2 4k,8k or 16k page size (in
this case the pre-15 and the ase 15.0.2 have the same 32-bit/64-bit version)

Method 1) Use SYBMIGRATE utility

Can I use SYBMIGRATE when my old server is a 12.5.x version?
(I will have the page size changed on the new ASE15.0.2 server)

Method 2) BCP In/Out strategy

Create the ASE15.0.2 Adaptive Server with a 4k,8k or 16k page
size

Create devices, databases, and tables on the ASE15.0.2

bcp out on ASE12.5.x 2k page size server and bcp in on
ASE15.0.2 4k,8k or 16k page size server to bulk copy data into tables.

Thanks in ad vance

Kind Regards

Telma

You'll also need to create devices and databases as in
your method 2 below (but you probably already knew that).

Its also a good opportunity to consolidate or clean up
device layouts. Data and log segments need to match
but ajoining like fragments can be merged.

You'll also need to bring across the logins, roles
and anything else you've defined in the master database,
any custom system sprocs in sybsystemprocs, etc.

This approach is a lot more time consuming but it does
allow you to create cleaner layouts, if required.

This won't work. You can't simply replace the binaries and
expect it to work. ASE will barf on start up because the
master database is the wrong version. You'll need to
follow the upgrade steps as outlined in the manuals.

> or Should is use this method if the 32-bit server is already
> a version 15.0.x?

It will work for a 32 to 64 bit migration. The manuals
	explain the details.

This is what sybmigrate was intended for.

Yes. This is what sybmigrate basically does (as well as a few
other things like recreating all the objects).

A couple of things to consider - do you need to go from 32bit
to 64bit? Do you need to change the page size?

The simplest thing to do would be to install the desired
target server elsewhere, configure it and do some test
runs of some of the above scenarios. Start with the
simplest - dump and load - unless you change the page
size. Do test sybmigrate and compare how long everything
takes. This will give you an idea of the expected downtime.

Dump/Load (from ASE 12.5.4 to ASE 15.x) - VS.
Hi All, We are in the process of planning the upgrade of our ASE 12.5.4 dataservers to ASE 15.x. What is the most recommended way to upgrade ASE dataservers from ASE 12.5.4 to ASE 15.x? Potential options: 1) Install new instances of ASE 15.x and load database dumps from our ASE 12.5.4 dataservers to the newly installed ASE 15.x dataservers. - OR - 2) Use the ASE upgrade utility (sqlupgrade) to upgrade our existing ASE 12.5.4 dataservers to ASE 15.x. What are the Pros vs. Cons for loading a 12.5.4 database into a 15.x ASE dataserver versus performing an ASE dataserv...

When upgrading from ASE 12.5.x to ASE 15.x, what is the best version to upgrade too? Dear All, I'm currently working on a ASE 15 upgrade project (upgrading from ASE 12.5.x). I'm trying to decide what version of ASE 15 we should upgrade to. What are your thoughts? Which version is the safest bet (ASE 15.0, ASE 15.0.1, ASE 15.0.2, ASE 15.0.3 or ASE 15.5)? Which ASE version is considered, at this time, the most mature and reliable version (i.e. with the least amount of known bugs, least amount of upgrade issues, etc.)? Upgrade ASE 12.0/64 bit on AIX 4.3.3 to ASE 12.5.x/64 bit on AIX 5.2
Trying to find what is the supported upgrade path for the above. Going from 12.0/64bit on AIX 4.3.3 to 12.5 (or 12.5.x) 64bit on AIX 5.2. If I put AIX 5.2 , the dataserver binary of 12.0 will not work which is used during the upgrade. If I put 12.5.x on 4.3.3, the dataserver binary will not work beacuse it is new binary for 5.2. Other than backup the databases and load them to the new server, is there a supported how to upgrade? Thanks! ...

Are there any common errors / issues related to using the dump/load strategy vs. sqlupgrade utility for upgrade/migration to ASE 15.x (from ASE 12.5.x)? Hi everyone, I've been reading posts on this discussion thread to try to see if I can find any disadvantage of using the dump/load strategy vs. using the sqlupgrade utility (i.e. common errors / issues). So this sparked a few questions... 1) Is one upgrade/migration strategy prone to more errors and issues than ...

ASE 12.5 32bit to ASE 15.0 64bit upgrade
What are the steps to upgrade from 12.5 32bit to 15.0 64bit on AIX 5.3? The 15.0.1 Installation Guide describes the normal 15.0 upgrade process but then has a terse section towards the end, "Migrating from 32-bit to 64-bit version", that describes other steps. Are these steps in addition to the normal upgrade process (sqlupgrade) or are they in place of sqlupgrade? Do I really have to drop and re-create all compiled objects (step 12 under Method #3: Replacing the binary)?
