Online training

Hello Guys,

I keep thinking how can we lower the barriers to wxPerl and increase its uptake.

I wondered if some online training might be quite nice. I would like
to try creating some online training videos, maybe we could upload
them to youtube or somewhere. I wondered if anyone knew of any
classroom software that would allow us to do that.

In the absence of any decent and free conferencing software that would
allow us to video conference, share screens, ask interactive questions
and of course record it for posterity, we could use Google Hangouts
for the time being.

Therefore, I would like to invite you to an initial video Hangout.
The subject would be "How to create a simple data entry screen with
wxPerl". We'd cover the basic layout of a window and how to collect
data from it. I'd like to invite everyone to join in, if you are more
experienced, please feel free to join in and contribute your own
ideas, if you are interested in the wxPerl book, please join in and we
could use the information we generate for samples and parts of a
chapter, if you just want to learn, then even better.

We are in all sorts of time zones, so I suggest if we did it late
evening UK time, it would be early morning antipodean time and daytime
in the US, sorry India.

What do people think? Would that work?

Regards

Steve.

Hi Steve,

The thing is, so much programming these days has shifted into app
development for iOS, Android, and Windows Mobile. The hard fact is that
wxPerl will never be as popular again as it was before the post-PC era. My
own opinion of course.

I originally came from Perl/Tk, which was immensely popular 15 years ago.
Then, with the passing of Nick Ing-Simmons, the interest began to drop
sharply. At present, Perl/Tk is completely dormant, and I can't see why
anyone, in this modern age, would consider learning Perl/Tk. And that is a
real shame, because Perl/Tk is actually very pleasant and powerful to work
with.

Thank goodness wxPerl is not in the same category yet. Now, having said that
there are a couple of interesting things to consider. Depending how popular
Perl 6 will become, if wxPerl were to be the first native GUI toolkit for
Perl 6 programmers, I can see how that would spark renewed interest in
wxPerl among the Perl community.

Secondly, I subscribe to the Perl Weekly newsletter (http://perlweekly.com).
They have a very large subscriber base which seems to be ever increasing. I
think it would be a great idea to regularly submit a short article or blog
post about different features that wxPerl has to offer. I would certainly be
interested in contributing that way. By keeping wxPerl on the radar this
way, who knows what might eventuate.

Best Regards,

Ron.

Hi Ron!

Perl6 already has a IUP module. So wxPerl can't be the first ;) I didn't
test it though.

I do have interest to use wxwidgets with Perl6. So I started playing
with NativeCall. Name mangling is a pain in the a**. I'm still figuring
how bindings between Perl6 and C++ should work, because Perl6 has some
support for name mangling C++. But I can't get it to work yet.

I did some research on this and I have to admit writing these bindings
is no easy job. If anyone has some kind of basic example, like opening a
wxframe, I'd be more than grateful :)

Hi Erik,

Thanks for providing this information. The URL for the IUP toolkit, for
people who are interested, is

https://github.com/mrhdias/perl6-IUP

I imagine it would take a mammoth effort to port Wx to perl 6. I applaud
anyone who even contemplates taking on such a task. This is definitely far
beyond my technical ability.

Cheers,
Ron.

WxPerl online training needed
I would be willing to pay someone who could provide some online/remote/telecommute training for me. I know perl but I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around some basic things concerning WxPerl. I don't know how much time it would take. I would expect less than 4 hours total time over the coarse of two weeks. I would like to think I am smart enough to get what I need in less than an hour but what ever it takes. [wxperl-users] wxPerl Wiki => wxPerl Kwiki
Hello all, Once upon a time I installed a Wiki, called it the wxPerl Wiki and didn't look at it anymore. I noticed that only a few people use it, it's been hacked a few times, and to make it work, at least yours truly should put more time and effort in it. This morning I started installing Kwiki, which is a far better Wiki platform than the Wiki that was installed. Apart from the UserPreferences page (working on it), everything works as it should. However, the data people entered in the old Wiki can't be converted to Kwiki automatically. Therefore I need your ...

I appear to have succeeded, that is, I don't get any errors, but I also don't see a box. How do I give it a position, size, etc?
