Times for configure; make; make test

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Moin,

somebody asked a while ago here about times for configure and compile:

configure: 1m 19s real (sorry, forgot to write down user time)
make: 4m 52s real
                4m 23s user
                   19s sys
make test: 4m 45s real
                2m 31s user
                   18s sys

Compared to that: time to download latest snapshot: 2m 31s, time to
unbzip/untar: about 20 seconds. All in all it took me about 15 minutes
from start to end.

The system is an Athlon Thunderbird (not the latest generation called
Palomino) running at 1.0 Ghz (AMD no longer produces anything under 1.4 GHZ
except the smaller/slower Duron series). The RAM isn't the fastest either
(DRAM 133). The disk is a fairly recent "big" one, but has "only" 5400 RPM.
However, anything took place in a crypted partition, limiting especially
the disk access from 24 MB/s (raw writing) to about 5 MB/s - there are
certainly faster systems ;)

Of course, to the hour or so it takes on an iPAQ, this simple rocks ;)

Cheers,

Te"I am already sleeping on my keyboard"ls

foolperl-5.6.1: make; make test; rebuilds twice on AIX
I just wanted someone to know that make; make test; recompiles all the C code twice on AIX (this had been fixed in the past). This is admittedly a minor annoyance in an otherwise fine release and probably indicates a busted make more than anything else (gmake does the right thing), but if it can be easily fixed, I say do it :-) John. Why different results with 'make smoke' from 'make test'
From 'make test': t/dynpmc/foo.................................ok 1/9 skipped: various reasons t/dynpmc/gdbmhash............................ok t/dynpmc/rational............................ok 1/8 skipped: various reasons .... and these have been the results for these tests for months. no more 'make install && make test' with shared libperl.so on Linux
Everybody trying to build a Perl with a shared libperl.so on Linux knows it: make test will actually test the previous built. This already resulted for me in more than one horrible confusion. One could get used to; always say make install && make test This cannot be considered a solution, though. The little patch below fixes that; it also makes a less serious change to Configure: it lets it exit with a zero status on success, so one could say, ex. $ ./Configure -Dusedevel -def ../thrdconfig.sh && make test_harness Regards Adi -----------------------------...

[ID 20020325.001] make -j && make test doesn't work
[reposting with the fixed subject] This is a bug report for perl from stas@stason.org, generated with the help of perlbug 1.33 running under perl v5.7.3. ----------------------------------------------------------------- If I'm trying to build bleadperl with 'make -j' on an smp kernel (dual proc) it has some minor failures unaffecting the tests, but this prevents one from being able to say: make -j && make test since 'make test' won't run. here are all the relevant Error reports from make (the whole log is 170k). If I'm not mistaken...
