[ID 20001107.006] Problems installing perl5.6.0, perl5.00405 on AIX
Hiya. I'm attempting to install both Perl 5.6 and/or Perl 5.4.5 on an AIX box running AIX 4.1.2. They both compile with no problems: they fail a few tests, but those still result in 99% functionality. What blows up is the install. Perl 5.4.5 reports an out of memory error upon installation, like so: root@appf ***** /netadmin/temp/perl5.004_05 28 % ./perl installperl -n cp perl /usr/local/bin/perl5.00405 chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/perl5.00405 Out of memory! ('top' shows 1400MB free virtual memory, 124MB free real memory, etc.)...

[ID 20000518.009] Bug/Inconsistency in POP3.pm (libnet) with perl5.6.0
Hi, I have spent a couple of hours tearing my hair out over this, and found an easy work-around... this happened since grabbing perl5.6 and libnet1.0703. The problem: perl code using Net::POP3.pm was failing to connect to the localhost. Examining the logs showed it never tried - running with debug showed the constructor always returned undef. Grabbing the smtp port works fine, as does sunrpc and a couple of other ports. It turns out that the POP3 module attempts to get the port for "pop3" service, where this basically standard Linux 2.2.13 (Redhat 6.1 with a kernel u...

[ID 20000522.003] perl5.6.0 Sys::Syslog.pm setlogsock/_PATH_LOG/connect bug
This is a bug report for perl from rtm@cert.org, generated with the help of perlbug 1.28 running under perl v5.6.0. ----------------------------------------------------------------- [Please enter your report here] The Sys::Syslog::setlogsock uses "defined(&_PATH_LOG)" to determine whether a call with the argument 'unix' is acceptable. Unfortunately, &_PATH_LOG is unconditionally defined in Syslog.xs, so the argument 'unix' will always be accepted (and setlogsock will return success), even on systems where it won't work. Solaris 2.6 is suc...

This Week on perl5-porters - 6-12 January 2008 "Um, I think you caused me negative work. I rather wanted "dtrace" support and it seemed that because of you I didn't have to write it." -- Nicholas Clark, on the joys of having other people do your work for= you. Topics of Interest Ever more strict In the continuing "strict by default in 5.12" thread, Glenn Linderman made a most pertinent remark: Perl 6 has staked the "strict be default" claim. Perl 5 may approach the same place, but will have to do so more sl...

Salvador patched the prototyping mechanism to permit C to mean that a bareword will be converted to a typeglob. Rafael Garcia-Suarez replied that "stat" already had...

Ron Isaacson had reported that he used code references in @INC, to great effect, but regretted that the modules loaded...

This Week on perl5-porters (6-12 October 2003) summary++ # new week. 5.8.x binary compatibility Chip Salzenberg notices some binary incompatibility issues between perl 5.8.0 and perl 5.8.1 : some XS modules built under 5.8.0 don't run properly with 5.8.1 without being recompiled. This is due to the new hash randomization feature. Running perl 5.8.1 with the environment variable PERL_HASH_SEED=0 fixes it. Chip suggests a more general fix -- basically to move the hash seed to a global variable instead of a function argument -- and says that 5.8.2 should be rele...
