12.1 ralink rt3090 can't activate device

hello there,

I can't get my wireless to work. the device is a ralink rt3090 in a
netbook.
the kernel driver is rt2800pci with the newest kernel from the stable
12.1 repo.
the wired connection works fine.

everything seems to be fine, in /var/log/boot.msg are no entries.

when I try to activate the wireless device in the kde network manager,
the device instantly deactives itself.

edit: terminal output

Are there any pertinent messages in the output of the 'dmesg' command? That is
not the same as boot.msg. In addition, if you use systemd, boot.msg is empty.

doesn't seem so. heres the output: 'dmesg output for diagnostic -
Pastebin.com' (http://pastebin.com/QWeW0DzF)

interesting seems the last line, it appeared after i tried to aktivate
the card.

From the dmesg output, suspend/resume is clearly not working. It would be
better if you do not suspend or hibernate until the device is working.

The section of the output prior to suspending shows no errors.

okay, then i will avoid suspending.

but that still does not help with my actual problem. could the kde
networkmanager be the problem? i read something like that in another
forum.

I just tried to set the network settings in yast with ifup. didn't
change anything - wired works, wireless not.

OK, it doesn't work. We still need some additional diagnostic information.

Please go back to NM, and try the connection. Please report what happens, then
post the output from the following:

[code]
/usr/sbin/iwconfig
sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan
/usr/sbin/rfkill list
[/code]

If rfkill is not a valid command, then hook up your network and 'sudo zypper
install rfkill' and then repeat.

"ideapad" and "acer-wireless"?

I guess that you have a mild version of the problem that
the kernel module for acer laptops and wireless devices is loaded on
laptops of other brands
including Lenovo devices.
Compare:
'Threads tagged with -acer-wmi-'

You may check if acer-wmi is loaded by
Code:
--------------------
    lsmod | grep acer*
--------------------
.

Martin

okay. next problem: I blacklisted the acer_wmi in

Code:
--------------------
    sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf
--------------------

Code:
--------------------
    blacklist acer_wmi
--------------------

then I rebooted and now I cant even try to activate the wlan device. In
the popup menu it's now grayd out.
now rfkill says

Code:
--------------------
    /usr/sbin/rfkill list
  0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
  Soft blocked: no
  Hard blocked: no
  1: ideapad_bluetooth: Bluetooth

  Hard blocked: no
  3: phy0: Wireless LAN
  Soft blocked: no
  Hard blocked: yes
  5: hci0: Bluetooth
  Soft blocked: no
  Hard blocked: no
--------------------

how to solve that one?

"Wireless LAN [...] Hard blocked: yes" -> Please look for a hardware
switch anywhere on your lenovo ideapad s205 (on the right side between
the mic out and HDMI) and try to turn your wlan switch on...

If there is no (real) hardware switch working with linux you might try
to boot in the operating system that was installed by the
seller/manufactor (e. g. Microsoft W7), activate the WLAN there and boot
into openSUSE after that.

*Good luck!*

yes, the hardware switch is on, I have never touched it and checked the
position.
the trick with windows is worth a try, but if I remember correctly, the
last time I booted windows the wireless was on. Unfortunately windows
doesn't boot any more (grub says something like disk read error) at the
moment and I currently have no recovery disk at hand. I will try/check
if it is activated in windows, as soon as I get my recovery disk.

If that doesn't work, I will have to uninstall linux and use windows
again. I bought that netbook for my studies and wanted to use linux for
a change. If the hardware switch doesn't work on linux, linux is not
usable on that machine :-( I doubt that another distro makes a change.

thank you for your help everybody, the original problem was solved :-)
(wierd thing, acer drivers loaded on non acer laptops)

I will report back if it worked with windows.

wireless is working now! just got it a few minutes ago to work. this did
the trick: (first post, point 3.) 'Be aware if you are thinking of
buying a Lenovo Ideapad S205 netbook! - PCMech Forums'

I am not sure, but I seem to suffer from the random disconnects that
some other users already have reported. I will have to test longer to be
sure about that.

thanks again!

So you went in the BIOS, disabled and enabled the wireless LAN.
Thanks for reporting.

Can't boot 12.1 after update & can't mount the partition for backup
Hi all. Last Sunday I've run an update for my 12.1 x64 running off an external HDD (my internal has to be replaced) with the new btrfs File system. It updated fine on Sunday, then I started it once on monday to get some info from the net - all went well, after I returned from Univeristy to get to answering mails I the farthest point I got with the system was the login-screen. After that the system crashes with a lot of messages which I unfortunately can't copy here as I can't access the bootlogs on the drive (gonna try rescue install now that I've got the media)....

I can't get no cache, I can't get no cache. 'Cause I try and I try and I try and, I can't get no, I can't get no cache.
I have fiddled out for days tinkering with the setting in about:config trying to get FireFox 12 to use the disk cache. I have NOT found the trick. This One Trick Pony ain't doing it like it used to up until recently. Pray tell anyone, What information can I share that will point a knowledgeable person to aid me in getting FF to disk.cache? I have also tried restarting FF with add-ons disabled, (There were NOT too many to do this to, so it was quick and easy) Here is my stab at trying to convey the information that MIGHT govern matters Using about:cache Informatio...

Why I can't login in 'host' or 'admin' account when i upgrade to 3.1.1 from 3.1.0
Hi,I unzip DNN3.1.1 package and conver to my DNN original directory (ver 3.1.0) and install successfully. But when i login in 'host' or 'admin' account, it display 'Login Failed' ,so i tried to clean cookies in IE and also delete my portal aliases in C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files\. But it still can't login by any account.Anyone have an idea what's wrong? I can't swear to this, but it seems I've had problems in the past with account resets in this situation. Have you tried logging in as Host with the default password "host"...

10.1.1 won't baseline so I can't upgrade to 10.1.2
I have assigned 10.1.1 to all of the devices in the zone and ignored the remaining devices in the pending column, but 10.1.1 says "In Process" and will not Baseline. Can anyone help or has anyone experienced this? I can't upgrade to 10.1.2 until this happens. 12.1 M5 KDE won't connect to any wireless network
System uses a broadcom legacy chip(not sure which one off the top of my head), but had no issues setting it up successfully with the install_bcm43xx_firmware script. It scans networks and works properly except it cannot actually connect to any of them. Networks tested had WPA, WEP, and no encryption. User credentials were confirmed to be correct by using them on other devices with no issues. Issue exists with both knetworkmanager and ifup. I haven't tested Wicd because I really don't want to use an 11.4 repository on 12.1, though I'm aware that the odds of real damag...

Wireless 1.1 Can't Login
Using Groupwise 5.5e and WebAccess with Wireless 1.1 The webaccess works fine from a regular browser, but when you try and access it from a wireless device it allows you to put in your login and password in and then tells you: your login is not current. please login again. In knowledge base I found one on TID that reference a proxy problem when running across multiple servers, but the web server and all groupwise agents are on the same server in my case so I don't think that will apply. Anyone got any ideas? justin@eculligan.com wrote: >In knowledge base I found...

Can't activate Signature option in SM 1.1.14
I just noticed something odd in SM 1.1.14 when after quite a long time I wanted to re-activate my signature. I don't even really know at which point in time it didn't get added anymore :-\ Anyway, the weird thing is, that in Edit -> Mail & NG Account Settings -> Compose & [whatever that is called in the English version] I can't even select to add a signature in the Compose area at the top right, when in the drop down selection box below the 2nd checkbox, the most common option "Begin reply underneath cited text" [or something like that in English]...

Can't install ASE 12.5 with Repserver 12.1
Hi, I seem not to be able to install ASE12.5 with Repserver 12.1 on NT. Anytime I install the ASE 12.5, and then install Repserver 12.1, The ASE refuses to start. What can I do? Thanks in advance Kenny I had the same problem as others have. I ended up installing REP 12.1 then ASE 12.5, in that order even thought it says otherwise in the manual. I haven't tried it, but someone else had said that reloading Open Client 12.5 will fix the problem after loading REP 12.1 on top of ASE 12.5 Hope that helps. Hi, No, It did not work. What else? Kenny Are you installing...
