Zenworks Imaging Problem with Intel 965

Hi, I Have been look at the imaging problem We are having related to the
Intel 965 motherboard. I have already applied the hot patch 3
(ZDM7SP1_HP3_20070220) this has upgraded the Linux kernel to
2.6.16.21-0.25. However Im still having a problem with the kernel
finding the cdrom at startup. It just stops with the error message
Could not find the ZENWorks installation CD. Activating manual setup
program. I have done some research and it looks to be a problem with
the kernel not supporting the IDE controller architecture. It appears
that the problem has been fixed in later kernel updates unfortunately I
dont know how to add the fix to the Imaging CD. Any suggestions would
be great.

Things I have tried:
insmod=ide-generic 		//no change
all-generic-ide //no change
Changed the ACHI settings in the bios //no change

I'm willing to try to recompile the kernel but I'm new to Linux so I
would need some instructions on how to preserve the imaging engine.

Thanks for your help.

Here is the all the information that I have been able to gather on this
issue.

The issue as I understand it is that the version of the Linux kernel
which is on the Zenworks Imaging CDs does not support the Pata/Sata
driver on this mother board. When you boot the system using the
imaging CD (including HP3) it displays a "Could not find the ZENWorks
Installation CD error.

'Bug#387741: linux-image-2.6.16-2-686-smp: JMicron JMB361 on intel P965
b' (http://tinyurl.com/2m4w3l)

Apparently the ata_piix controller driver either does not load or will
not allow the controller to connect to the IDE CD rom.

After crawling through forums I discovered that the 2-6-18 Kernel can
has moderate support for this chipset. Working through the
NDSEngineers forums I was able to get a replacement kernel for the boot
cd.

After replacing the initrd, linux, and root files on the zenworks
imaging cd I was able to get the 965 to boot by setting the sata drive
to legacy emulations and passing an all-generic-ide flag to the kernel.
This allows the system to load the drivers but release the IDE CDROM.

Thank you very much I had stared down that path using the 'information
you pointed out ' (http://www.zenimaging.info/downloads/zenworks/)but
did not think to try the "all-generic-ide " after using the 2.6.18
kernel so I was going to try to patch the kernel to 2.6.20 however my
knowledge of Linux is still limited. I will try the all-generic-ide
and the 2.6.18 kernel before I peruses the kernel patch any more.

Thanks again for the quick responses

Ok, here is the out come I was able to get the 965 to work in using the
boot iso that was provided along with all-generic-ide (kernel
2.6.18.3).
However when I copied the root, Linux and initrd files to the zenworks
hot patch 3 CD, it was able to detect the cdrom but stopped and gave me
message that said the cd was not a zenworks install cd and could not
continue the auto install. I have no idea what it was looking for. I
also tried the newest (kernel 2.6.18.6) root, Linux and initrd files,
they did not give me this error but it was unable to find the cdrom at
all even with the all-generic-ide boot parameter(wired). It would be
nice to use the 2.6.18.6 kernel because I was able to get ntfs-3g
working and edit the welcome screen to display my company logo, however
at least imaging is working again. Thanks you very much for your help.
And if you have any ideas for me let me know.

Thanks,
Bob

The HP3 CD has a different structure than the vanilla CD. I was unable
to get the HP3 cd to work with the 2.6.18 kernel.

The HP4 cd does not work for booting the 965 architecture we have on
hand. I have not tried to replace the kernel with the working 2.6.18
kernel. I will do so this afternoon and let you guys know how it goes.
