Performance problems + Other problems

Hi,

Im running a Netware 6 server for the novonyx webserver, And its
almost
only used for www. 1st service patch installed.
Total memory is 767 MB, UW SCSI disk with Adaptec card, And its a
Celeron
2ghz, 10/100 network card on a 10mbit connection.

Because i have huge traffic (200-600+kb/s almost every time) i have
looked
around a bit regarding performance. But now i dont know the standard
values of.

Maximun Simultaneous requests
Listen Queue Size
HTTP Persistent timeout
And the cache size in obj.conf file.

Does anyone know what this values should be as default and in heavy
load ?
The server has some big files 150mb+ downloadable on it.
And i get mail about broken downloads and timeouts

I also have some other problems with it.
If i let the server creates index of a folder its eating my memory,
So i
need to restart it every 4-6 days or so.

It abends if i just want to restart the webserver, Wasent there before
but
it have started with it.

And another thing with the index, Sometimes it creates a page that are
not
correct. Pasting sample.

SP3 is now installed.

But it still eats memory if i Novonyx is making the index every time
that
page is accessed.

It dosent depends on the size of the files.
It seems to be that when u have lots of files in a folder and u let
the
page be created "indexed" it cant release the memory used.

I think u could see this problem if u put many documents (the more the

better 100-1000) in a folder and try to update it some times.
And checking free memory before and after.

can you go into Monitor | Loaded Modules and see which one is eating

I used the remote manager.

Top mem modules are.

And the server was rebooted 18 hours ago, and had 115397 request since
it
started.
Checked on another server and NSHTTPD was only 5MB.

it shouldn't use that much memory. I would do the following:

map a drive to the root of SYS
open a command prompt
switch to that drive
FLAG *.* N /S (will remove readonly attributes from all files on SYS)
reapply SP3

if that don't work, then post magnus.conf and obj.conf

Ahh... missed from... every thing gone.

I have tested on another server, and it shows the same problem.
Cant a Novell programmer look at the module for creating index files
?

SP3 installed

Easy to simulate.

1. Make a folder in the web without index.html
2. Add about 200-500 files (size dont make any different)
3. Check memory on server
4. Update the page several times (10 - 40)
5. Check memory again

Then make me a bug fix.

OK, I used SYS:\SYSTEM which according to Windows Exploder has 935
files in it

starting memory was 3.8MB

ending memory was 4.7MB refreshing the page from 2 different
workstations. Note that I did not change any files in the directory,
I
just kept hitting reload on the browser.

> are these servers upgrades from NW5, or NW6 original installs?
They are clean installs of NW6, with both with SP3.
But the problem was there before the servicepacks to.

So u did see the problem to, then im not alone.
In a more used website this makes the problem bigger than the
simulation.
And as im learned a novell server just runs and runs and runs. And i
have
even read about a missing server at a school, but they found it atlast

built in behind some wall. :)

It seems like the index module cant release the memory when its done,
If i
make a index.html it works greate.
But if the server have taken to much memory it sometimes make an abend

when restarting webserver, So its better to reboot it then.

ps. I hope they find a solution to this because i love the index
engine.

yeah, but after 40 refreshes it only took 1 extra MB of RAM for 935
files indexed. I tried both simple and fancy indexing, and could not

get it to take any more - perhaps you have a cache setting that is
eating memory? could I see your magnus.conf and obj.conf files?

maybe your web server is busier than mine, but I have in magnus.conf:

RqThrottle 48
ListenQ 4096

and I do not have:
ExpectInternationalUrl ON
AsyncDNS on
MaximumFilesReturnedInIndex 4000

perhaps comment these lines out for testing, restart the webserver and

see if it helps - then add them back one at a time, and see if the
problem re-occurs

Ok.

I will try that one.

magnus.conf
RqThrottle 48
ListenQ 4096
#ExpectInternationalUrl ON
#AsyncDNS on
#MaximumFilesReturnedInIndex 4000

Obj.conf
Init fn="cache-init" MaxTotalCachedFileSize=2400

It maked an abend when i was going to restart it, but we will se if
that
problems dissapear with those settings.

Yes in my opinion its heavy used, but thats my guess.
About 1500 hits each day (not so much)
And about 200-300 kb/s Lan Troughput in a medium value, sometimes
40kb/s
and sometimes up to 700+ kb/s (checked in "Health Statistic Trend
Graphs" )
Everything used for the webserver.

Now there are 134 files in 36 folders of a total of 179 MB unindexed.
And free memory after i did restart it is "Available Memory GOOD 527MB

764MB 767MB "
Time and date "Novell NetWare 6 Server Version 5.60.3, March 27, 2003
-
Server Up Time: 0:00:07:09"
Hit counter is now " 231428 " on my page

Then we will se in a day what the difference is.
But i guess this is a bug with the index engine, and it have not been

found because not many ppl using it with this kind of traffic.

Do you have contact with the developers/bug reports at Novell ? Or you

mayby are one of those. (You mayby should ask if anyone have seen this

problem before).

Best Regards
Magnus

Now its time to compare.

I have tryed the settings u suggested but.

Still 134 files in 36 folders of a total of 179mb.

Free memory now after little more than 20 hours are :
Available Memory GOOD 458MB 764MB 767MB

Time and date :
Novell NetWare 6 Server Version 5.60.3, March 27, 2003 - Server Up

So in about 20 hours it have used about 80 megs of my system memory.
And total hits to my first page has been 1193, but it could be greater
if
they have saved a favorite direct to any folder.

Its the NLM memory usage that grows,

We can take another question meantime.
Is it possible in a simple way to have any of those stats pages in
remote
admin visible for a normal web surfer (just a link to it on my page) ?

I have now tryed the file
nshttpdnw6.exe; 842250 bytes; Date/Time: 11-12-2002/04:02PM
That contains the NLM file dated (aug 16, 2002)
But the problem is still there.
These are those top 5 nlm now.
NSHTTPD.NLM 6.00.07 2002 Aug 16 1,150,853 654,699 134,057,984
135,896,304
129 MB
SERVER.NLM 5.60 2003 Mar 27 1,212,416 1,576,960 53,293,056 56,082,432
53
MB
NSS.NLM 3.03 2003 Feb 7 157,904 541,472 19,230,720 19,938,288 19 MB
DS.NLM 10350.19 2003 Mar 18 2,128,489 356,610 3,645,440 6,142,827 5 MB

FILESYS.NLM 5.13 2003 Feb 11 580,215 76,736 2,580,480 3,286,583 3 MB
And the server have been running for 12hours now.

So it seem like we need to make that coredump.

Can u tell me the routines how i submit it.
Should i make it with the old or new NSHTTPD ?
And where do i send it ? , Cant post files here and it can get huge.

Best regards
Magnus
