Secure FTP file held open issue

There have been numerous posts over the first half of this year
regarding SSL FTP services having issues with many clients. The
problems range from a file being held open after transmitting, the
server disconnecting after transmitting, or files transmitting 100%
but never storing on the server.

I have tried the following clients:
SmartFTP v1.0 Build 981
Filezilla v2.2.7b
WS_FTP Pro v8.02 and v9
Secure FTP 2 v2.0.12

The only client that seems to work is Secure FTP 2. But, we have
other people trying to connect to us with other clients and do not
want to switch. We are fully patched to Netware 6.5 SP2 running
NWFTPD.NLM 5.04.20 (May 25, 2004).

This is still not working. I have submitted a bug report to Novell.
Does anyone in the "in" community know if there is a timeframe to get
this fixed at Novell? Or, is there someone from Novell who can
explain to all the FTP client companies how to fix the problem in the
client?

do you have SET LEVEL 2 OPLOCKS ENABLED=OFF and SET CLIENT FILE CACHING
ENABLED = OFF in autoexec.ncf (before the volumes mount)

I set both of those settings and still have the problem. I even did a
full server restart.

There are different results depending on the Secure FTP client:

Filezilla: Transfers 100% complete, but the server never saves the
file. And then the connection gets reset.

WS_FTP: Transfers to 100% but the program hangs there, and the server
connection stays open and then the nwftpd.nlm never releases the
connection or the file that was being transferred.

Secure FTP 2: FTPs successully everytime. No problems.

OK, the reason this one works is because it is what Novell uses for
testing :)

My Novell contact has some new NLM's if you want them for testing??
Let me know where to send them and I will tell her.

The new NLMs would be greatly appreciated. We currently have our
production FTP server demoted as a testing server. It is running NW
6.5sp2 w/ eDir 8.7.3.1. Let me know if that will work with the new
NLMs.

You can send the NLMs to my yahoo email address.

Thank you for keeping this thread open!!

I found out the following information from Novell:

At issue is the fact that most sFTP clients, when breaking down an SSL
connection, don't send through a Close Notify packet. Most FTP
servers are aware of this, and tear down the connection regardless,
but ours had not been built with this 'workaround'.

Right now, there is an Internal Winsock build that has this
functionality built-in. If you'll please keep an eye on our website,
there will soon be a WSOCK6x release with the fix.

I tested a pre-release of the WSOCK6x files, and they do fix this
issue (and so far hasn't caused any other abends either). :)

Thanks to everyone for getting this working!!

Open File Utility

I have used a utility called WhoHasIt in these past occasions to determine what files are open. Security Issues with files.
Hi, I'm new to .Net and I have been building a download centre for files. However I only want to files to be downloaded by registered users. Therefore to solve this problem i created a directory called 'Files' and added a number of access rules to block out unknown users. This worked great when i tested it on the localhost. When i tried the direct path to the file it redirected me to the login page. However when i now try it on my IIS (v5) it doesn't redirect me for any files except .aspx. This would enable users to directly download the file (if th...

FTP Open File
In visual studio 2005 I was able to do a 'open file' from the file menu and select a file from an FTP server, work on it, and save it back.  In the open file dialogue box there was a list of 'FTP locations' and an option to 'add/modify ftp locations'.  Great for doing a quick change to a web.config or something like that. I see none of this in VS 2008, and if I just pick the FTP server from the explorer list, and select the file from the ftp server, i immediately get an error of  'document  cannot be opened.  It has been deleted, renamed ...
