Where is and how can I view a log file? Netware 5.1

I use nwadmin to manage users etc. on my netware 5.1 server

I see a small error log within this but no real log files.

Is there a log file/events file?

How do I view it?

That depends on what log file you are looking for.
The server's main log file for error messages shown on the server console
is sys$log.err in sys:system on the server. It can be viewed through
NWADMN32 in the server properties. However the server has a number of
other log files depending on the services you use and those log files you
have to open them yourself on the server (e.g. not through the
administration tools).
So what kind of log files are you really interested in?

Thanks for the reply.

I'm looking for one that would give details on deleted files and
directories

Well, there is no log per se that gives this. What you are looking for is
more like auditing functions. Auditing needs to be specifically enabled
before it gives you information on operations that were done.
However in case of deleted files, the salvage function of netWare may
already be very helpful as it will not only allow you to recover deleted
files, but also tell you when a file was deleted and by whom.

There is none, unless you enable auditing. I assume you want to find
out who deleted a directory? In that case, if auditing is not enabled,
then your best be is to go into Salvage and tru to salvage the files,
there you look for "deletor" to see who deleted them.

The function you are looking for is Auditing. Please have a look
in the documentation, search for "Auditing" and "auditcon".

Assuming NW 4.11 or above:
Auditcon, Audit directory services,Audit directory tree
Highlight the O or OU and press F10, enable container auditing
Auditing configuration,Audit by DS events:
Log in user on
Log out user on
(f10 to toggle), Esc, save=yes
Audit options configuration:

Hour of day to archive (0-23): 1
Number of old audit files to keep (1-15): 2
 Allow concurrent auditor logins: No
Broadcast errors to all users: No

Error recovery options for audit file full
 Archive audit file: Yes
 Disable audited events: No
 Disable event recording: No

Auditing reports,View audit file, no filter

Note that all auditing is done separately per O or ou!

If you are willing to consider a commercial alternative,
that supports PureIP, then there is a command-line auditing utility
that I have written.
Please see: http://www.caledonia.net/catalog.html and
http://developer.novell.com/nss/nss_profile.jsp?product_key=83789

**********************************************************************
WARNING! Read this even if you think you know what you are doing!!
If you turn on auditing for certain events, like login and then set
Archive audit file = NO and Disable audited events=YES you will
lock yourself out of your server. The same thing will happen if
you let your SYS volume run out of disk space.
Always set Archive audit file = YES and Disable audited events=NO!

**********************************************************************
If you just need to track logins/logouts, then there is a product
called
AuditLogin from http://www.condreyconsulting.com. I have not tested it
so
I cannot vouch for it's quality.

I'm building a test network that is currently a mess. This network will be used to test the migration of my 10 netware 5.1 Sp 6 servers to NW 6.5. netware 5.1 sp8 in a mixed netware 5.0 / 5.1 nds7 tree
Any problems doing an overlay SP8 for Netware 5.1 (on only 1 server, the backup server) in a mixed environment and then upgrading Groupwise and Primary File Server later on off-hours? Specifically, the question is, all servers in the tree are NDS 7.62b The SP8 seems to require NDS 8.x. Will this 1 server running NDS 8.x cause a problem in the same tree with all the other 7.62b servers?
