UserApp 3.5.1 won't deploy, can't configure

I've got a formerly working, now dead, UA3.5.1 here. I was on vacation
last week, so wasn't around when it died.

Looking at the jboss output (jboss.log is attached), it looks like this
is the relevent error:

17:34:21,084 INFO [SessionFactoryObjectFactory] Not binding factory to
JNDI, no JNDI nam
e configured
17:34:22,267 ERROR [Boot] Unable to retrieve global configuration

to listener insta
nce of class com.sssw.fw.servlet.InitListener
java.lang.RuntimeException: com.sssw.fw.exception.EboDataException:
Error loading framewo
rk base configuration into memory.

Also, if I try to run configupdate.sh, I get:

[Fatal Error] :-1:-1: Premature end of file.
Exception in thread "main" org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Premature end
of file.

at
com.novell.internal.installer.idm.ldap.LdapConfig.main(LdapConfig.java:180)

Now, this was all working when I left. We had a power outage on
Tuesday, but the UA was brought back up and was running ok again on
Wednesday after that, so I don't think it's related. Some time Wed or
Thu, it died.

This looks to me like something, somewhere, is damaged, but I can't
find what it is. At least going by the file system timestamps, nothing
changed.

UA is 3.5.1 patch R
OS is SLES9

Looks like one of the configuration files in the IDM.WAR that has the
initial configuration for the framework is corrupt, no longer valid
XML. Which one I don't know.

Do you have a backup of the IDM.WAR prior to the powerhit? Try
restoring that.

Tried going back to Monday. That didn't help. IDM.war looks like it's
the same, though.

Using the IDM.war file from the uapatchR install (backup) didn't work
either. Same error. I'm thinking it's not the IDM.war file. Any clues
as to what it's trying to retrieve ("Unable to retrieve global
configuration settings.") and from where?

Interestingly, it's getting far enough to make an LDAP bind to the
eDirectory server, but it's not doing anything useful with that bind.

It just repeats this pattern a bunch of times. It seems to have managed
to bind ok, but doesn't search for anything, just goes off and binds
again.

Some of the configuration for the User Application is stored under the
User App driver in the objects under AppDefs. This is XML data, wonder
if one of those got corrupted and that is the problem, just a theory.

Greetings,
I am having a problem with getting the server.log.

Please double check that your Public Certificate in
eDir is still valid. I have seen similar issues
when the certificate in eDir has expired. This
is the one that is generally only good for 2 years.

Greetings,

1) Also, have you confirmed that the UAD is still okay?
Some of the Global config settings are stored in the UAD.
If we can not reach / read the xml in the UAD then it will
fail with a similar error.

2) If you modify the configupdate script to make it run in
debug mode, do you get any errors when you launch, try to navigate
or press OK at the end.

John pointed to this, too, and I had come up with the idea myself, but
wasn't quite sure where to look. As it turns out, this is indeed the
problem. I had been trying to see via an LDAP trace which objects the
UA was attempting to use, to see if I could find a problem with those
specifically. For some reason, that didn't work for me.

I had previously re-deployed the UAD, but that does *not* change the
data in the AppConfig objects and attributes. Those were damaged
somehow (still working on the "how" part here...) and all of the
XmlData attributes were 0 bytes. These are stream files, and were
somehow nuked in the file system, not via eDirectory itself. I was able
to confirm this because the changes did not synchronized to the other
server in the tree. I was able to use that server to recover, by
promoting it to Master and doing a Send All for the partition. This
replaced the missing stream files, and the UA is up and running again.

So, the error I started out with turns out to mean that the UA cannot
read the configuration data from the XmlData attribute stream files
stored on under CN=AppConfig under the IDM UserApp Driver (UAD) in
eDirectory for some reason. In my case, it was file system problems,
but it could also be a problem contacting the LDAP server itself, or
with access rights to those attributes and objects.

I had previously tried that, but it didn't change the output of the
configupdate.sh script at all, so I discounted it as not being
implimented or something. Should it have produced more extensive
output?

Good theory, John. In fact that's what it was. I was heading that way,
too, and using the LDAP trace to find out what objects I needed to be
examining. Strangely, the LDAP trace didn't show any attempt to read
any of those objects.

But, closing the loop on this one, the problem was that the XmlData
stream files were destroyed on this server.

Glad to hear you got it resolved. Interesting how the files got nuked,
makes you wonder sometimes if computers have a mind of their own ;)

I always forget about the configuration in the UAD.

Yeah, I'm working on getting that figured out too. Data isn't supposed
to disappear from withing the eDir dib files directory like that.

It'd be helpful if that [Boot] error message could be more specific
though, like including the object/attribute/data that it's trying to
reference, rather than just complaining that it couldn't read something
then dieing. That would have saved me a day or two of effort.

>I always forget about the configuration in the UAD.

I don't think I'll ever forget them again.

10.1.1 won't baseline so I can't upgrade to 10.1.2
I have assigned 10.1.1 to all of the devices in the zone and ignored the remaining devices in the pending column, but 10.1.1 says "In Process" and will not Baseline. Can anyone help or has anyone experienced this? I can't upgrade to 10.1.2 until this happens. FF 3.1 Beta 2 Internal Window Won't Close, Can't Open Links in New tabs or Windows
Name: Nellie Product: Firefox Release Candidate Summary: FF 3.1 Beta 2 Internal Window Won't Close, Can't Open Links in New tabs or Windows Comments: When I opened an e-mail message in Excite, the usual message window popped up as an internal window, but there wasn't anyway to get it to close. I've also noticed that the only way to get links to work is to click on them as the current window. If I do a right click, I don't get the usual menu to allow me to open it as a new tab or window. Browser Details: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:...

some can't/won't use 3.x
Name: KFW Email: spreznibatdrizzledotcom Product: Firefox Summary: some can't/won't use 3.x Comments: One could hardly go to the clothing store in 18th-century Virgina and ask for dark-colored clothing so as to make ex-slaves less visible as they traveled, but there was a market for such clothing anyways. Alternatively, people in various parts of the world make other use of computers than consuming Western mass media. Intellectual "property" can mean people's lives, land, foodstuffs, health, and genetics, not just the latest pop hits. But DRM is in...

why I won't (can't) use firefox 3
Name: Christopher Olinde Email: agricolaeatverizondotnet Product: Firefox Summary: why I won't (can't) use firefox 3 Comments: I'm running windows vista on an HP desktop. I keep getting suggestions to upgrade to firefox 3. I tried, and it was a great mistake. It conflicted with my AVG program (I think) and I could not even uninstall either program. I was almost forced into a Recovery. Also, it will not work properly with Microsoft media player--I don't really like anything having to do with Bill Gates, but some of these programs are necessary to acces...

Why I can't or won't use T-bird
Name: John Colman Email: cdbookieatsbcglobaldotnet Product: Thunderbird Summary: Why I can't or won't use T-bird Comments: It is late at night, I'm frustrated. I've spent hours over the past three days trying to get Thunderbird to run. As you can see I have a Yahoo account using Outlook (mine is getting buggy) for e-mail. I'm a confirmed Firefox user, so T-bird seemed the next step. I've use YPOP and webmail. Can't seem to get through the username/password screen. I've searched your faq's, read the tutorial. I'm really not a stupid p...
