GWIA not sending mail(450 Host down)

We had a series of NS go do and made the change to a another provider.
I've changed the DNS records to reflect the change.
I've changed the resolve.cfg file to reflect the changes.
When I run GWIA every outgoing mail has on it 450 Host down
(destination domain)
ex:
01-21-10 00:47:15 0 Queuing deferred message:
NWFS1/MAIL:\GWDOM\WPGATE\GWIA\send\sb56eb93.009
01-21-10 00:47:15 10 DMN: MSG 397 Sending file:
NWFS1/MAIL:\GWDOM\WPGATE\GWIA\send\pb56eb93.009
01-21-10 00:47:15 10 DMN: MSG 397 Send Failure: 450 Host down
(gmail.com)
01-21-10 00:47:25 0 MSG 398 Analyzing result file:
NWFS1/MAIL:\GWDOM\WPGATE\GWIA\result\rb56eb93.009
01-21-10 00:47:25 0 MSG 398 Detected error on SMTP command
01-21-10 00:47:25 0 MSG 398 Command: gmail.com
01-21-10 00:47:25 0 MSG 398 Response: 450 Host down (gmail.com)
01-21-10 00:47:25 0 MSG 398 Deferring message:
NWFS1/MAIL:\GWDOM\WPGATE\GWIA\defer\sb56eb93.009

I've serched the forum and have read a lot of the problems others had
but I'm yet to find a fix. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked/changed any traffic filters to suit the new addresses,
DNS seems to be working, but port 25 traffic doesn't seem to be allowed
out - that's why all the hosts are down.

Are you seeing any incoming mail ?

Cheers Dave

Hi Dave,
Yes they can receive e-mail okay and can send some ok, but not all
outgoing is going out.
I had a look on the blacklist and their ip address is somehow are
listed or registered and I can't see anything that suggest that there is
spam being sent out. Surely this would show up in the GWIA log files...
yes???
I know some of the address/domains that they are trying to send to
always come back as 450 host down.

Those domain are places that the client always sends mail to but cannot
now.

Someone mentioned something about backscatter, exactly what is it and
how does one go about fixing it.

What I need to also mention is that directly behind the router is a
Linux gateway system, data flows back and forth from this and the mail
is sent to the internal GW mailserver.

Sounds like the GWIA should only be talking to the Linux box then ?. If
so, then you need the relay host settings in place for the GWIA, there
should be an /mh setting in the GWIA startup file that points to the Linux
box

I'll have a look at this in the morning while I'm there. My only issue
with that is the only thing that changed was the DNS servers ip address
and this was changed in resolv.conf (cfg).

Dave, does Novell have a method of stopping backscatter for GroupWise
6.5.6?

Thanks

Additional information:
I can ping and telnet to port 25 from a workstation within the network
to the 450 Host down domain. I can ping from the server console to the
450 host down. I can also ping and telnet to port 25 from the Linux
gateway. What I do not understand is why the client is still getting a
450 host down

So the Linux box is only used to handle incoming mail ?, or is it supposed
to handle both incoming and outgoing. I'm not clear on that from your
description.

From the log files, it looks like the GWIA is trying to send directly to
the receiving servers and is finding the target server address, so DNS
seems to be OK, but when the GWIA tries to establish a port 25 connection,
then that fails, hence the 'Host Down' messages.

You say that some messages are going out successfully, so what does that
look like in the logs ?, also is the GWIA logging set to verbose ?

The SCA log entries are the GWIA moving an incoming mail over to the MTA,
but that particular message must have been a fair size to take so long to
move ?

As for the backscatter thing, the GWIA doesn't send mail replies out to
unknown recipients any more and hasn't for a long time, so there is
nothing you need to do about that as far as the GWIA is concerned.
However, if incoming mail is first received by the Linux box, then that is
a separate issue as to how that handles it.

Cheers Dave

Only the incoming mail as GWIA handles the outgoing mail.
Correct when ever there is a port 25 connection to certain sites it
fails with a host down error.

How does the GWIA machine talk to the outside world, directly or NAT ?

This is looking more and more like a bad wire to me, I'd talk to your new
ISP and have them do a thorough check of the connections.

Hi Dave, yes it talks to the outside world via directly.

Good news the problem has been solved, I did a dns lookup on a web
based system and saw that the reverse dns setting was not correct per my
instruction to the isp and once they fixed it all is good now. So the
main problem was definitely the dns servers and the reverse dns
settings.

Thanks for your help

Hi everyone. I have 6.5.7 that is on a 10+ years box. It's time to put it to rest - I said but the boss does not want to spend the money - heard that before!
