Groupwise client view needs refresh to show new email

Hi,
I have several users, to the point that I think it is a universal
problem, who need to use the Groupwise client View;Refresh or F5 to see
their new email show up in the mailbox view. Those who run Groupwise
notify tell me that Notify will tell them they have new email; but when
they go to the Groupwise client, the new email is not there... until they
do a refresh, or close the client and reopen the client.

We are using Groupwise 6.5.3 for Client as well as domain and post
offices. Over the last year I have searched the Novell Knowledgebase for
info, and found nothing that fixes the problem. Clients are configured
to use the default "refresh interval" of 1 minute.

The entire Groupwise system is set up with "Access Mode" Client/Server
only. I am wondering if we have an IP communications problem; but the
reports from users are not all in the same VLAN or IP subnet, etc. so it
doesn't logically sound like that is the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Andy

The notification of new messages happens over UDP (as opposed to TCP,
which is what the client uses to communicate WITH the poa). Anyway, a
primary culprit for such UDP packets being blocked are client firewalls,
including the one in XP2. Are you using a client firewall?

Jim,
No, we are not using any client-side firewalls. This problem has been
evident on users of Windows98 workstations, as well as windowsXP. Those
that are Windows XP2 have the firewall turned off.

There is no network firewall between these users and the Groupwise server.

Andy

Hmm.. I've never seen that behavior happening in non-firewall cases.
Does the problem "clear up" if you restart the POA? Also, on the netware
server, did you by-chance change the

LARGEST UDP PACKET SIZE
or
MAXIMUM PHYSICAL RECEIVE PACKET SIZE

to non-default values? Just stabbing in the dark here...

More stabbing in the dark:
Is there a Broadcom NIC in the server? If so, check the driver version.
See TID 10076183.

Jim,
Presently,
LARGEST UDP PACKET SIZE = 16384
or
MAXIMUM PHYSICAL RECEIVE PACKET SIZE = 4224

I am not sure if these are default; we rarely tweak these settings. Are
they correct?

As for "clearing up" with restart of the POA, I would say "no". The mail
server has been rebooted a few times over the last year. Is there a
valid test I could do here? It seems to me a restart of the POA would
not be the "fix"; but would it tells us anything concrete?
Thanks,
Andy

Uwe,
No, it is an HP NIC (NC10xx/NC67xx/NC77xx Gigabit server adaptor).
Thanks anyway for your help ...I assume you did a search on the
knowledgebase for UPD issues, and found this TID?? Do you have any more
ideas?

Uwe,
Sorry, I was hasty in my answer. the HP card is actually a Broadcom
card, and the Q57.lan dirver mentioned in the TID is in fact what is
running. I am tracking down updates (presently running Q57.lan ver.7.61
june 18, 2004)

Those are defaults, so no problems. I've seen weird cases where admins
tried to set the physical receive packet size to 1514 or similar when
this is a BAD thing on Intel nics because the buffer needs more room
than the actual Ethernet frame size.

It would simply tell us if the problem "appears" over time that the POA
is up (thus implicating the POA itself), or if it happens immediately,
those possibly not implicating the POA itself, but an underlying comms
issue.

Let us know how it goes. We had serious trouble with this a while ago, I
don't know which driver version though.

After research, I have determined the issue was with Q57 and B57 NIC card
driver version 2.32 7 May 2002 and earlier. Though, I have not been able
to find a published statement that this problem was in fact fixed in a
certain version. There are two newer versions of the Q57.lan than what
we now use (7.61 18jun04). We are going to apply NW65sp5 this week,
which contains the newest Q57.lan and TCPIP stack. I will then track if
this gives us an improvement.
Thanks for your help ...I will give a status update here in a couple
weeks.
