Bellsouth account

Back to square one.

Again the problem with the Bellsouth.net account with Thunderbird 52.7.0

Receives all mail fine but gets the 535 5.7.1 error when sending.
Having been here before, I tried every iteration of smtp possible..nothing.
I just spent over one hour with ATT support(?) going over the reset
password routine until my keyboard and mind crashed.

Reloaded Tbird..copied a backup profile..cleared cache, etc.
I installed a new profile..same thing.
If it's Tbird I'm sure it can be fixed, but ATT...???

I think I've reached the end.

thanks for any additional suggestions

POP3 or IMAP? And that error number appears to be a wrong
username/password combo (but you probably already knew that).

It could well be a simple setting. Have you by chance tried with
Portable Thunderbird? See how it behaves. If Portable works, then it
might be a setting on your side. If it fails, it has to be on the ATT
side. I think 52.8.0 ESR is going to be pushed out in the near future,
it might help.

We also need to know if BellSouth is using Yahoo, Gmail or Outlook for
the service.

Most of these services have have a switch to allow "Less Secure App" to
send & receive eMail. Sp perhaps it might be something like this.

OK I suggest login to your Yahoo account using Firefox and then look for

The error you are getting suggests that either username or the password
is incorrect. However, First you need to check that your SMTP settings
looks like this:

IMAP:
smtp.mail.att.net / 465 or 587
SSL:

Pop3:
outbound.att.net / 465

Make sure your username is in full: responder@bellsouth.net or something
like that.

Thank you again....been there-done that...along with every iteration I
could think of.

Maybe tomorrow, along with a full carafe of coffee, I will bite the
bullet and call ATT again.

OK...Just got off the phone with ATT digital services and after going
through the reset password routine again, the tech now tells me the
problem is with Comcast, my internet provider. He said that Comcast is
not allowing me to connect to the "inbound.att.net" server that ATT
runs the email on..and I should call them to correct it.
The beat goes on....

inbound.att.net server?

I don't see that server here.

Hi, Walt..

Although I felt foolish and knew it was wrong, I allowed Comcast to have
a laugh when I called them

So, I called ATT digital services just now and maybe got the real answer.

As we speak, ATT has cancelled their Yahoo relationship and is in the
process of exporting all the email addresses back to ATT. Not finished
yet, but when my account kept going to Yahoo mail where I have an
account but never use, I logged out and back in with my bellsouth
account and all my mail is there on the ATT site.
Now all by itself, I see that Thunderbird had downloaded all of today's
mail. Next I will try the sending and if that works, no more
coffee...I'll switch to wine.

I guess I had better open the wine because although the inbound is fine,
the outbound still has the 5.7.1 error..

This works fine for me and has done so for years now (since they switched
over to Yahoo mail).

Well, it appears that I can't post a jpg here. This is what my outgoing
server settings for ATT are:

           Description: Default
           Server Name: smtp.att.yahoo.com
                  Port: 465
             User Name: whatever@bellsouth.net
Authentication method: Normal Password
   Connection Security: SSL/TLS

Oh. BTW. Have you cleared the saved password for the account and then
re-entered it? I've been told that this sometimes help if there is a hiccup.
