new tab nightmare

When I open a link in Thunderbird a new tab comes up first before the 
website then I have two pages up instead of one. the new tab is a blank 
page. how can I stop new tab from coming up

Thanks for your helpful reply, I tried your suggestions and still had 
the same problem but it made me check further in my settings and I found 
an extension named New Tab Over ride so I disabled it and so far so 
good..thanks for your help
