SeaMonkey 2.2 Beta 2 Release -- Introduces New Features

SeaMonkey 2.2 Beta 2 is available for free download [1] now in 14
languages and makes a list of new functionality available to a wider
testing audience for the first time. Please note that this pre-release
version is still intended for testers only and might still show some
problems in everyday use. As always, we appreciate any feedback you may
have and encourage users to help us by filing bugs.

This version is built on top of Gecko 5 and features the following new
improvements:
CSS Animations [2] are now supported.
Improved canvas, JavaScript, memory, and networking performance.
Improved standards support for HTML5, XHR, MathML, SMIL, and canvas.
Improved spell checking for some locales.
WebGL content can no longer load cross-domain textures. [3]
Background tabs have setTimeout and setInterval clamped to 1000ms
to improve performance. [4]

Major changes since 2.2b1:
Bundled extensions/add-ons (ChatZilla, DOM Inspector and JavaScript
Debugger) are no longer optional in SeaMonkey's windows installer. (Bug
666518).
Archive options can now be changed from the Copies & Folders
Account Settings pane (Bug 607295).

The changes page [5] lists a more detailed overview of new features and
fixes relative to our last stable release, SeaMonkey 2.1. [6]

We welcome any and all discussions on this beta on our newsgroups, or
you can even file a bug if you find one. Be sure to check our Known
Issues prior to filing bugs.

SeaMonkey 2.2 Beta 2 is available for free download on the SeaMonkey
website. Once you have downloaded and installed this release, we'd like
to encourage you to get involved in discussing and reporting problems as
well as further improving the product.

Thanks for testing and helping us to make SeaMonkey even better!

Justin:

Don't forget to mention the fix for corrupt downloads to network share when both
machines are Win7 or Server 2008 R2.

This fix is extremely important because it made FF/SM non-starters for many people.

I have been holding off on 2.1. When do you think 2.2 will be final?

Justin,

In Help|Troubleshooting Information on Thunderbird 5 it includes a 'Mail
and News Accounts' section which is quite helpful. This 'Mail and News
Accounts' section is not available in SM 2.2b2 - will it be in the final
version?

Short answer: No.

SM is currently using the same version that FF uses, which has the
benefit of giving us all improvements made to it (e.g. there have been
several iterations of changes to the graphics hardware acceleration
section) at zero maintenance cost on our side. On the contrary, the TB
devs are maintaining their own version, which has the benefit of
including MailNews data but at the cost of them having to back-port any
changes made to the FF version (part of which might be irrelevant to TB
since they don't include a full browser component). If we adapted their
code, we'd have to maintain yet another version since theirs resides in
non-shared parts of the code.

Note that I'm all in favor of doing our own hybrid version, but that's
something that needs active development, so the chance of making an
appearance in something that is currently in Beta is zero. Probably too
late for Aurora, too. That leave us with "maybe, sometime" (trunk).
Someone needs to commit to doing it first, of course.

The right solution in my mind, is to get the core code for this to allow
"app-specific" hooks into this.

So that Thunderbird/us could add Mail Account data.

Firefox could indicate something that is outside of toolkit in general,
Songbird could indicate the DB size of the song list. [Open]Komodo could
list the versions of configured helper-apps [Python, Perl, etc.] and
enabled JS-Toolkits etc.

I don't know how likely it is to be accepted or any API ideas yet on
this, but maintaining a fork is something I would not want to do if we
could help it (sadly we can't /overlay/ this in content, iirc).
