Asa Dotzler has posted some plans for the forthcoming Mozilla Firefox 1.1,
Mozilla Thunderbird 1.1 and XULRunner releases
<http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.mozilla.devel.seamonkey/5182> to the
netscape.public.mozilla.seamonkey newsgroup. Firefox 1.1 will be the first
major update to the Mozilla Foundation's flagship Web browser since
November. Similarly, Thunderbird 1.1 will be the first major revision to
the email, newsgroups and RSS/Atom client since its 1.0 release in
December. XULRunner <http://wiki.mozilla.org/XUL:Xul_Runner> is a
relatively new technology that is designed to make it easier to develop and
deploy standalone Mozilla-based applications.

At the moment, the main Mozilla development trunk is frozen, meaning that
only changes approved by drivers@mozilla.org can be checked in. The next
milestone is Gecko 1.8 Beta 2, which will form the basis of the next
Firefox, Thunderbird and XULRunner test releases. The Firefox test release
from this cycle, previously referred to as the Firefox 1.1 Developer
Preview or Firefox 1.1 Alpha, will be called the Deer Park Developer
Preview (Deer Park is the codename for Firefox 1.1). This name is intended
to discourage end users from downloading it. The Deer Park Developer
Preview will aimed primarily at developers and any major extension
development or Web development changes should be finalised by then.

The trunk will remain frozen as progress continues towards the Gecko 1.8
Beta 3 milestone, which is scheduled for around five weeks after the Deer
Park Developer Preview. At this point, Firefox 1.1, Thunderbird 1.1 and
XULRunner should be feature complete. In addition, a localisation freeze
will come in to effect, meaning that changes to user interface text will be
restricted. The Firefox and Thunderbird previews delivered from Gecko 1.8b3
will be more public with names like the Firefox General Preview. Both
developers and interested end users will be encouraged to download and test
them. A more public preview of XULRunner may also be released.

Following this, the trunk will remain frozen and no major changes to Firefox
1.1, Thunderbird 1.1 and XULRunner will be allowed. When the release team
is confident that no major problems have arisen from the General Preview
testing, a 1.8 branch will be created, allowing the trunk to reopen for 1.9
development. The final releases of Firefox 1.1, Thunderbird 1.1 and
XULRunner will come from this branch, with a series of release candidates
made available for testing first. The Firefox 1.1 release is likely to
occur before the Thunderbird 1.1 and XULRunner releases.

Read Asa's newsgroup posting for more details, including a diagram.
