other platforms

I know that many have wanted Delphi for other platforms.
But for any one that CG supports, there are several left
out in the cold.

It seems like what is needed is a runtime that goes across
platforms. .NET promised to be that, but we know how far
that got.

Is FLEX the answer?
http://dobbscodetalk.com/index.php?option=com_myblog&show=Flex-the-interface.html&Itemid=29

98%! of browsers have Flash loaded. Silverlight can only dream.

Delphi could support this one platform and an app could easily
run on all machines and browsers that have Flash loaded.

Reminds me of the story (note the lack of a reference) of when
the pentagon wanted a remote controlled drone. They went to
Lockheed, as the story goes, which came back with a cut down
fighter at over $1M each. Isreal did the same thing at the same
time but started with a simple remote controlled plane.
Final cost, $150K each.

Silverlight and .NET both seem like the same kind of overkill
solution. To boot, FLEX can run on a desktop, outside of the
browser.

Flex has some downsides.
http://weblogs.asp.net/jezell/archive/2007/05/03/silverlight-vs-flash-the-developer-story.aspx

A good IDE and language that compiled down to Flash would
help a lot with that. 8: -)

Have a look at FreePascal (http://www.freepascal.org)

So did Borland's CLX, but that fell flat on its face.

There are third-party implementations of .NET, such as Mono
(http://www.mono-project.com), for non-Microsoft platforms.

With the rising popularity and capability of Virtual Machines, it could be
argued that the need for multi-platform support is diminishing. Not ideal I
know, but IMHO its better for an app to look and work great in one platform
than be mediocre just to support a few more minor platforms, YMMV.

Yes and no: there are plattforms where a VM is useless.
Smartphones (Windows Mobile) for instance... ;-)

I definitely disagree! Nothing beats (speed, etc) native applications.
If we only consider Windows and Linux - with your argument you can say
nobody needs to develop Linux apps because you can run Windows apps via
WINE. WINE is pretty awesome, but it's only a band-aid until a native
alternative is available.

Remember that there are many, many more platforms other than Linux and
Windows. Mobile devices for a start, OS-X, *BSD, etc...

All nice, but not everybody has a large overpriced machine with a lot of
memory and cpu etc., so price should definitely be an issue.

Since they stepped on the ms-train this is very unlikeley to happen
(unless ms would make a move in that directon), and with the "recent"
CLX background i would not trust codegear with any other OS platforms
ever again. Instead i would put my money in open source projects like
lazarus/fpc or mono. Although its far from finished i was already very
impressed with fpc, its becoming a possible replacement choice for delphi.

IMHO Linux will be a biggest OS-vendor in a few years, and this will
happen as soon as the goverment (or any large companies) will allow open
source replacements for exchange, office and other populair client
software. That could be the start of the downfall of MS. Then again it
could also be decades away, the market is unpredictable, it is not easy
to plan any future development except for obvious unicode and 64 support
(which is a good start btw)

here's a tech question for non-tech
I have not had occasion to want to do this before, so I'm hoping someone can enlighten me. I have an app built in D7, and it's rather complex in its functionality. Is it possible to rebuild the app to run as a service? Would that require separating the user interface from the app? Is dev-platform for platform users or platform developers?
So since dev-tech-xpcom closed, there's been an awful lot of traffic on dev-platform from platform users. I don't really have time to read this, and it probably means I'll be paying less attention to the platform developer traffic on dev-platform (if any at all; I'd long since unsubscribed to dev-tech-xpcom until told to resubscribe to follow the XPCOM memory management discussion). Adding a Platform to a Delphi Package
I have upgraded a project group from D7 to D2010, XE, and now XE2. For some reason, it will not allow me to add the Mac OS/X platform, so I am stuck with only Win32 & Win64. I have re-factored the project so there are no more dependencies on any Windows elements. Is there a way to add the OS/X platform? The projects are Delphi packages that I have re-factored to be compiled with conditional directives to support Win32, Win64, and OS/X. With some directives in place (CodeSite related), the OS/X target would not be valid, but without it, it should be. What is the best w...

Delphi XE
I sure hope I'm wrong but I don't see any mention or even clues about the expected cross-platform support in Delphi 2011. In the first sneak peak video, we see the following: 1) When creating a new project in Delphi XE, the menu gives the same old options: "Package - Delphi", "Unit - Delphi", "VCL Forms Application - Delphi", "Form - Delphi". The absence of a "[Cross Platform VCL] Application - Delphi" is conspicuous. 2) In the closing screen, it lists all the products in RAD Studio XE. For the description for Delphi, it says, ...

Delphi Apps in Mobile platforms [Edit]
Delphi XE2 is bundled with iOS support which gives us enough confidence about the future of Delphi. I want to discuss about how they are going to be implemented. I am quite sure Delphi for Android is going to be based on fire-monkey GUI, but what about the byte-code , It will be based on Dalvic or native ARM code.
