export crystal report to PDF

 Hi everyone,

I have a question.

I have a project where i had to convert a gridview into a PDF file, but this was getting very difficult so i decided to use a crystal report instead.

Which now leads me to a an other question.

In my page i can use the (drag and drop) CrytalreportViewer and then export to PDF, but i was thinking of something different.

What i wanted to do was still had the gridview but add just below a "Export to PDF" button, that would export the content of the gridview (which is the same of the crystalreport) to PDF.

What i mean is when the user presses the button it would export the crystal report to PDF.

So what i googled and i found this code, but it gives me an error right on the first line

   Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

        Dim myReport As CrystalReport1 = New CrystalReport1()  --> it says : Type CrystalReport1 is not defined.
        'Note : we are creating an instance of the strongly-typed Crystal Report file here.

        Dim DiskOpts As CrystalDecisions.Shared.DiskFileDestinationOptions = New CrystalDecisions.Shared.DiskFileDestinationOptions
        myReport.ExportOptions.ExportDestinationType = CrystalDecisions.[Shared].ExportDestinationType.DiskFile
        ' You also have the option to export the report to other sources
        ' like Microsoft Exchange, MAPI, etc.

        myReport.ExportOptions.ExportFormatType = CrystalDecisions.[Shared].ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat
        'Here we are exporting the report to a .pdf format.  You can
        ' also choose any of the other formats specified above.

        DiskOpts.DiskFileName = "c:\Output.pdf"
        'If you do not specify the exact path here (i.e. including
        ' the drive and Directory),
        'then you would find your output file landing up in the
        'c:\WinNT\System32 directory - atleast in case of a
        ' Windows 2000 System
        myReport.ExportOptions.DestinationOptions = DiskOpts
        'The Reports Export Options does not have a filename property
        'that can be directly set. Instead, you will have to use
        'the DiskFileDestinationOptions object and set its DiskFileName
        'property to the file name (including the path) of your  choice.
        'Then you would set the Report Export Options
        'DestinationOptions property to point to the
        'DiskFileDestinationOption object.

        myReport.Export()
        'This statement exports the report based on the previously set properties.

    End Sub

Can anyone tell how to fix this error? Thanks a lot.

If you have already any crystal report in your project that you want to export as PDF

just make sure CrystalReport1  and CrystalReport1()  renamed as "YourExistingCrystalReport1" and "YourExistingCrystalReport()"

if this work dont forget to make this issue as solved.

Thanks.

You need to add a crystal report named Crystalreport1.rpt in your project.

when you add crystal report make sure you setup the datasource/dataset for that report and when you will setup everything then you will be able to see the preview of that report by selecting the "Main Report Preview" tab located  in the bottom of of your report designer window. If you can see the report properly then you don't need to change any thing of your code you got it from the google.

if you'r using VS2008 then from tool bar menu follow  project-->add new item --> select "Reporting" from the left menu --> and select Crystal report from the right menu--> make sure your report name is CrystalReport1.rpt.
when you will add this report a Crystal report will guide you through everything to finish that report.

Or if you have any crystal report in your project just rename one of the report to CrystalReport1.rpt .

Thanks.

 Hi Marx,

I already have a crystal report created.

The only problem is that i would like to use a button to convert that report to PDF instead of using the CrystalReportViewer.

Thanks anyway.

If you already have a crystal report , example name is "CrystalReport2.rpt" then copy the code in the button's,  you want to use for exporting PDF, event handler.

Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
    Dim myReport As CrystalReport2 = New CrystalReport2()
    Dim DiskOpts As CrystalDecisions.Shared.DiskFileDestinationOptions = New CrystalDecisions.Shared.DiskFileDestinationOptions
    myReport.ExportOptions.ExportDestinationType = CrystalDecisions.[Shared].ExportDestinationType.DiskFile
    myReport.ExportOptions.ExportFormatType = CrystalDecisions.[Shared].ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat
    myReport.ExportOptions.DestinationOptions = DiskOpts
    myReport.ExportToDisk(ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat, "c:\temp\Output.pdf")
  End Sub

Make sure you have a folder name "temp" in your C drive. This code above works in my project properly.

Thanks.

 Hi Marx,

Thanks for the reply.

 I did exactly what you did, but i get and error on this lines

         myReport.ExportOptions.ExportDestinationType = CrystalDecisions.[Shared].ExportDestinationType.DiskFile
        myReport.ExportOptions.ExportFormatType = CrystalDecisions.[Shared].ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat
        myReport.ExportOptions.DestinationOptions = DiskOpts
        myReport.ExportToDisk(ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat, "c:\temp\Output.pdf")

Saying that ExportOptions is not a member of CrystalReport2.   What should i do?

Don't you have any class like someone suggested in a post above?

Thanks

Add CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine, CrystalDecisions.Shared  reference in your project from .Net library. Tool bar menu  project-->Add Reference-->select CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine, CrystalDecisions.Shared  --> Ok

Also imports CrystalDecisions.Shared in your Form class.

Thanks.

 Hi Marx,

I've googled how to find the framework.

I went to C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework and i have 3 folders with these 3 names: "v1.0.3705", "v1.1.4322" and "v2.0.50727".

So i'm guessing i'm using 2.0, right?

If you already added the reference of those libray files and still you are getting error the delete those references and download from here

http://www.dlldll.com/crystaldecisions.crystalreports.engine.dll_download.html

http://www.dlldll.com/CrystalDecisions.Shared.dll_download.html

Add reference of those dll in your project, hopefully it will work. Because its working in my test project.Thanks.

 Hi Marx,

I've downloaded the library's  and i still have the errors.

The only import i have to do is this: "Imports CrystalDecisions.Shared" , right?

And my report must be called "CrystalReport2.rpt" , right?

 Don't i need any class?

Thanks

You are right what you did so far , but Its a version confilct with the dll. You need  different version of dll for framework 2.0.

As I am using framework 3.5 VS 2008 so It works with my project.

Best way I think read that link to find out what version are you using? http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms225542(VS.80).aspx

Read that link to choose what version of dll you need. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms225607(VS.80).aspx

Then find that version's CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine, CrystalDecisions.Shared  dll in interner and add reference to your project.

Thanks.

 Hi Marx,

I'm a little confused.

I'm using Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition, so from the first link i know that i have Crystal Reports included.

Now from the second link i know this

 Product                                                 Hot Fix Applied        Optional add -Ons      Assembly Version   File Version

Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2005 no none 10.2.3600.0 10.2.51014.0

Then i went to C:\WINDOWS\assembly and found that i have 2 files of CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine. One is the version 10.2.3600.0 and the other is 11.5.3700.0.

So now what do i have to do? Do i have to download the the file version 10.251014.0 of CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine, CrystalDecisions.Shared and then add them to my project? Is  that it?

It seems like you have Crystal Reports version XI , I have a question, beside VS2005 do you have Crystal Reports installed separately in your computer? I mean do you install Crystal Reports before or after you install VS2005?

The Highest version of windows assembly suppose to match with assembly information in your web config file.

Like Iif  CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine  version  10.5.3700.0 . so webconfig file's Asembly information suppose to be  like

<assemblies>
    <add assembly="System.Core, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=B77A5C561934E089"/>
    <add assembly="System.Data.DataSetExtensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=B77A5C561934E089"/>
    <add assembly="System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/>
    <add assembly="System.Xml.Linq, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=B77A5C561934E089"/>

    <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.Web, Version=10.5.3700.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692FBEA5521E1304"/>
    <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.Shared, Version=10.5.3700.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692FBEA5521E1304"/>
    <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.ReportSource, Version=10.5.3700.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692FBEA5521E1304"/>
    <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine, Version=10.5.3700.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692FBEA5521E1304"/>

 Hi Marx,

Well i've never installed crystal reports in this laptop, so i'm guessing the VS2005 was installed  after the crystal reports.

About the web config file i don't understand what  you mean, but here is how my web config file looks like:

<assemblies>

   <add assembly="System.Design, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=B03F5F7F11D50A3A"/>

   <add assembly="System.Web.Extensions, Version=1.0.61025.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/>

   <add assembly="System.Web.Extensions.Design, Version=1.0.61025.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/>

   <add assembly="System.Windows.Forms, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=B77A5C561934E089"/>

   <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine, Version=10.2.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692fbea5521e1304"/>

   <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.ReportSource, Version=10.2.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692fbea5521e1304"/>

   <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.Shared, Version=10.2.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692fbea5521e1304"/>

   <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.Web, Version=10.2.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692fbea5521e1304"/>

   <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ClientDoc, Version=10.2.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692fbea5521e1304"/>

   <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.Framework, Version=10.2.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692fbea5521e1304"/>

   <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.InfoStore, Version=10.2.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692fbea5521e1304"/>

   <add assembly="Microsoft.VisualC, Version=8.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=B03F5F7F11D50A3A"/>

</assemblies>

So is anything wrong?

You can try by downloading version 10.2.3600.0 of CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.dll and CrystalDecisions.Shared.dll and add reference in your project.

Actually Crystal Reports 10.2 is bundled with Visual Studio .NET 2005 installed in your computer. Also you have Crystal reports XI installed separately in your computer. So if you attempt to upgrade a Crystal Reports 10.2 installation to Crystal Reports XI, however, the Crystal Reports XI .NET assemblies will not be available, because it is not possible to upgrade Crystal Reports 10.2 for Visual Studio .NET 2005 using Crystal Reports XI.

Also once you upgrade this version It will sometime causes version conflict during publishing your project.

In your situation, I would transfer my application to other computer that has VS2005 installed and in the c:\windows\assembly folder contains only  one version of CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine 10.2.3600.0.

If you run your application in different computer I think it will be fine.

Thanks.

Nothing crazy, just do things step by step, from simple to complex. First make Cristal Report working on your computer. After that marke reference copy local and deploy to the server.

How do I export from Crystal Reports to PDF
Can anybody give me some knowledge (links) as to how I would export my ASP.NET Crystal Report to PDF.  The way I see it, is I set up a button, that when clicked, exports the report to PDF. In VB .NET the Crystal Report viewer gives you an option to export to PDF. In ASP .NET the View does not give you that option. If I am wrong on this, do please let me know.In the mean time I foun...
