Shared User Controls Between multiple Web Applications

Hi,

Just wondering if it is possible to have design-time shared user controls.  E.g.  I have followed the process to setup a 'base' web project that contains a number of shared user controls and configured IIS.  I then use these user controls in a number of web application projects.  This works fine as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825996.  However the limitation is that you need to code the registering and using of the user controls rather than drag and drop.

I want to know if it is possible to add these user controls(through vss sharing) to each web app project so to enable you to drag and drop.  When i try i get the error...

"Parser Error Message: The type 'MT.Web.GlobalShared.Controls.DatePickerLite' is ambiguous: it could come from assembly 'C:\dev\MT\2.0\VCR\MT.VCR\MT.VCR.Web\MT.VCR.Web\bin\MT.VCR.Web.DLL' or from assembly 'C:\dev\MT\2.0\VCR\MT.VCR\MT.VCR.Web\MT.VCR.Web\bin\MT.Web.DLL'. Please specify the assembly explicitly in the type name."

which makes sense as there are obviously now 2 dll's using the same namespace.

Is it possible to set this up or do our developers need to hand code this.

 Thanks,

Simon

You could put your user controls in the GAC is one option.

If you do not want to make server controls, and you want design support, you can make a web app project of user controls, and pre compile using web deployment or aspnet merge to create a single or multiples, whatever, and then put those in your gac.

then you can have one top level config in the root of the site, and the referenced assemblies will be known to all applications. you can also install the dll in vs.net and get the controls on the toolbar.

lots of options.

another is to create a junction folder of your user controls in each application, and then they are "physically" there in each application. this has many pros and cons, mainly difficult to maintian, and control, but it works well if you want it.

thanks for the info...i was able to do this also just by not including the files in the project - which gets rid of the error, and still allows me drag and drop functionality - it will work for now

Single page with multiple user web controls VS Multiple page with specific user web controls
I have a question regarding single page with multiple user web controls vs multiple page with specific user web controls   Option 1: I am of the opinion to have multiple pages with specific user web controls and use an object to store all the information as the user navigates through the application. And finally at the end, read this object and save all the information to the backend database.   Option 2: My respected team member suggests that we have only one page, with all the specific user web controls and not use an object, instead show/hide the user web controls based ...

Web User Controls and multiple applications
I have two applications, "A" and "B". I have a user control in application B. When I drag'n drop the user control onto a page within application A, I get a simple html link or text that displays an "http://" path to the actual file, instead of the rendered control. While I know this is probably a "duh" question, I have been unsuccessful searching for answers on the web so... what is necessary to utilize a web usercontrol from another application? Any help is greatly appreciated. are you dropping the control in design view or sourc...

Shared user database but distinct roles for multiple web applications?
Is it possible with the built-in membership and role providers to share a user database between two web applications, but have roles that are specific to the individual web applications?    As an example, if I have two web applications on the same server, and I use distinct applicationNames in the respective web.config files for the role provider, I don’t think that will allow me to share a common user database even if the membership provider specified in the two web.config files has the same application name.  We have a “master” or template web application that is essenti...

Sharing User Controls across applications in .net 2.0

Howto share custom user controls between different web applications ?
Hi everybody, I'm trying to migrate an ASP.Net web application from version 1.1 to 2.0 and i am unable to use my custom user controls which are inside another project.  The way to solve this issue was about creating virtual directories and Project References between Web Projects inside the same solution (KB324785 - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324785). But apparently the notion of "Web Project" does not exist anymore inside VS2005 because the web projects coming from VS2003 are transformed into "web sites" and these web sites do not contain any p...

Can you share an Ajax modal extender between multiple web user controls?
I'm working on a project where we have a single master page which is being used by a couple of pages. Each of these pages has many web user controls. At the moment we're using Telerik's RadWindow control for modal popups, but these are proving to be a bit overkill for what we need, and they leave a massive footprint in the view state! So we're thinking about just sticking to the ajax modal extender instead. Using this will also cut down on postbacks and should lead to being able to asynchronously load controls on the page, because this will rely on not having postback co...
