Validation (): Element '<elementname>' is not supported. (178 of these warnings! HELP!!)

Hello crew,

I have loads of these warnings here are some samples...

Warning    172    Validation (): Element 'textbox' is not supported.
Warning    173    Another object on this page already uses ID 'datetb'.
Warning    174    Validation (): Element 'textbox' is not supported.
Warning    175    Another object on this page already uses ID 'weighttb'.
Warning    176    Validation (XHTML 1.0 Transitional): Element 'emptydatatemplate' is not supported.

Program works fine despite all of these warnings..

I'm guessing that i haven't registered something correctly.. or that there is an incorrect version of something added in here..

At one point I had the .net 3.5 extensions installed (the package with the dynamic data site template on it.) but took it off because it was causing problems.

It's driving me crazy because intellisense doesn't work and these green squiggly lines are cloggin up my screen! :)
If anyone has any suggestions that would be Great!

here is a screenshot of my references.

I just started experiencing the same Validation (): Element '<elementname>' is not supported. warning message.

This is in an ASP.NET 3.5 project that has been without these warnings for weeks now. I cannot think of or spot any recent changes that would have caused this. The project builds and runs fine otherwise. The lack of intellisense isn't something I want to live with though.

Some other symptoms are that the <asp: tag element names are getting forced to lowercase.

I have a Master page which contains the ScriptManager as shown in the screenshot below. This page, and all subsequent aspx, ascx pages now have this broken intellisense issue.

You have referenced for System.Web.Extensions 1.0 and 3.5. There should be only one. It looks like your project is 3.5 so you can remove 1.0 version.

Thanks

Thanks Mikhail for your response above. It doesn't relate to my experience though. I've tried creating a completely new, blank, ASP.NET project and intellisense remains broken for it in the ASPX pages.

Ok...a bit more info/troubleshooting. My OS is Vista Ultimate, running Visual Studio 2008 Professional.

I recently installed the VS2008 hotfix (KB946581). Thinking that might be related I uninstalled that hotfix but the problem remained.

I then ran aspnet_regiis -lv and received a "Cannot find any installed version." message.

So, I then checked in Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off. My IIS settings were all unchecked...I did not do this manually and not sure how it happened. I compared this to one of my teammate's PCs and he had the following items checked which I then checked on my machine:

This is very "tall" screenshot so I'm just providing the link here: http://i27.tinypic.com/6f8s3l.jpg

I checked the appropriate IIS options based on the working PC's setup. I then ran aspnet_regiis -lv which confirmed ASP.NET 2.0 was now installed on my machine.
However, once back in VS2008 the problem remains. I delted the "obj" folder, deleted all assemblies in my project's "bin" folder as well. I've rebooted, etc, etc.
The problem remains with "broken" intellisense in the ASPX source pages. The codebehind intellisense isn't affected, it works fine.

Also, here is my web.config file (ignore "foo" references, just done to keep generic). This is also a "tall" screnshot and larger so linked here: http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/7800/wc2pz8.jpg

Thanks for any assistance,
Clay

hey cangelly,

I think the cause of my problem was that I'd installed the beta extensions for asp.net 3.5

I ended up uninstalling them and re-installing VS2008.

not a great fix, but it worked for me.  I think that is what i had to end up doing.

Thanks ws... I'm not using any beta software so mine must be a different situation. Thanks for the feedback.

I have made some progress by following Mikhail's instructions here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/mikhailarkhipov/archive/2005/04/21/410557.aspx

That didn't fully solve the problem but once I deleted everything in my
C:\Users\cangelly\AppData\Local\Temp\Temporary ASP.NET Files that seemed to help...still some problems but a bit better...

Is there a real solution to this problem?  I'm having the same problem using Web Developer 2008 Express and it just started happening today.  The idea that excluding 1.1 or whatever has no barring on this issue so I was wondering if anyone actually fixed this problem or is it just in limbo.

 Thanks.

I was able to get away with this problem by cheanging the doctype on the page..

 I had

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">

Changed to

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">

That did the trick for me.

Thanks

This happened to me and it sucks because Intellisense is useless on these elements.   (The reason it happened has to do with profiles getting lost when my sys admin deleted my login from Active Directory, restored my login and in doing so also changed my password for me.)

QUOTING FROM THE BLOG OF From Mikhail Arkipov (AND NOT THE SAME GOES FOR VS 2008)

I blogged earlier that in VS 2005 we switched from using static XML schemas to automatically generating them using reflection on Web controls. XML schemas are generated on demand as you open pages in your Web site. They contain information about ASP.NET controls, custom and user controls. You can find generated files cache in

C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\Application Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\ReflectedSchemas

So, the first thing you want to do if you see dreaded "'asp' is an unrecognized tag prefix or device filter" error is to close all VS instances and then delete the folder contents. Restart VS, open your Web site and we will generate schemas again.

Great! It worked for me. Thanks a lot.

For others who are having trouble, clearing out the C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\ReflectedSchemas folder worked for me as well.
