Converting MDF files (SQL Server Express) to SQL Server 2005 WITHOUT having to buy SQL Server 2005 (I have Express). Personal WebSite Starter Kit
Hi (and HELP!),
I downloaded the Personal WebSite Starter Kit and got it working no problem on my local machine. But I've had nothing but frustration trying to get it up and running on a webhosting site. I picked hostmysite.com which uses SQL Server 2005. I was under the impression that it wouldn't be that big a deal to convert the .MDF files that Sql Server Express uses to a SQL Server 2005 database. I tried using SQL Server Management Studio Express. I was able to "see" my remote database on hostmysite.com, but I was not able to import the .mdf files ...Converting MDF files (SQL Server Express) to SQL Server 2005 WITHOUT having to buy SQL Server 2005 (I have Express). My objective is using a single DB file (mdf file) + SQL Server Express 2005 to run my program
I got two softwares here, Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. Firstly, I installed Visual Studio 2005, normally the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition will be installed with this software. After finishing the installation. I opened a new project and try to open a DB file (.mdf) from Visual Studio 2005, it works. The problem is that I can't restore the mdf file from an old database file since it lose a lot of functions that appear in SQL Server 2000 / SQL Server 2005. ...Sql Server 2005 Express or Sql Server 2005 Developer Edition
I just installed my VS 2005 Pro (full installation) and it installed Sql Server Express 2005. I also have a CD for Sql Server 2005 Developer Edition which I have not installed yet. My need for Sql Server on my development machine is for building and testing apps - just myself - no users will be hitting my sql server on my PC. Most of the time I hit my web server's sql server but also want the engine on my PC for when I'm offline.
Question: Should I install the developer edition and remove sql server express? Doesn't the developer edition more close...SQL server express upgrade to SQL server 2005?
I am currently using SQL server express for my website. The connection is fairly sluggish and it can take about 30 seconds to log in say. My web host says this is because I am using SQL server express and they recommend upgrading to SQL server 2005.
Has anyone else had similar sluggish connection with SQL server express?
Can I also ask the best way to upgrade an SQL server express database to SQL server 2005?
Thanks for any help
I dont know about the sluggishness but if you want to upgrade, you can just detach the DB, re-attach it to the 2005 ser...Upgrading from SQL Server Express to SQL Server 2005
How difficult is it to upgrade from SQL Server Express to SQL Server 2005? I'm afraid to use SQL Server Express because of the 4gb max capacity, but don't want to pony up for SQL Server 2005 just yet. Is it possible to start with SQL Server Express and easily upgrade if it becomes necessary?
You will have no problem moving a database from sql express to the full version.
You can make a backup and restore or you can dettach and attach or just make a create script and use a select into to move the data.
Oh and you can run both on the same machine.
Hope it helpsReg...SQL Server 2005 Installation problems with SQL Server Express & SQL Server 2000
I have had SQL Server Express and Sql Server Management Studio Express installed on my machine for some time and recently tried to install a trial of SQL Server 2005 as well. (Yes, I'm migrating from Visual Studio Express to Visual Studio Professional, just as in tended!)
Everything went fine except that nothing seemed to be installed. I searched in all the obvious places - both on the Start/Programs menu and on the hard-drive: nothing.
A check under Add/Remove Programs showed that Sql Server 2005 Express was installed, but called SQL Server 2005.
So after a number o...Moving SQL Server 2005 Database to SQL Server 2005 Express
I have SQL Server 2005 in my Development machine but the hosting server has only SQL server 2005 Express. I was wondering if I develop the DB in SQL server 2005 would be able to move/deploy it to SQL Server Express in the production server? If so how? Can I just generate the script and then run it on the productions server? Or there is a better/easier way?

Hi,Can SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed in a same machine. Will there be any conflict?Regards,Swami
Sure they can exists on the same machine. Generally speaking there won't be conflict. The only conflict I have encountered came with SQL2000 named instance: after install SQL2005, the anonymous service on UPD 1434 port (used by SQL2000 to find out named instance) may fail to start, if the "SQL Server Brower" service is not started; so connection may fail to find out SQL2000 named instance. In this case you can just start the "SQL Server Brower" ser...Visual Basic .NET 2005 Express & Sql Server 2005 Express remote server
I want to make a component library in Visual Basic.NET and connect to a remote Sql Server. When I create a new DataSet with the wizard, I can only connect to a .mdf file, but not to a Sql Server. With Visual Web Developer I can connect to a Sql server. What is the difference between these enviroments ? How can I do the same with Visual Basic.NET ?
Thanks in advance.
Visual Basic .NET Express cannot connect to SQL Servers. The Visual Web Developer is the only express edition that can utilize SQL Server. You need to upgrade to Visual Studio 2005 Standard or higher.Cheers,&n...Migrating sql server 2005 express database to sql server 2005 database

Hello,If I backup and restore an express database to sql server 2005 standard, will there still be limitations in regards to the database size, cpu...etc.? Thanks,Jon
I suppose that no. Limitations are connected to SQL engine not to database itself. But probably if your database will grow up connected to SQL Standard and you will try to move it back to SQL express you will be in trouble.
