Got a problem on "Using the Web Site Administration Tool" -- Unable to connect to SQL Server

Hi,
I'm trying the tutorial for Visual Web Developer 2005 Express.
I did everything like the tutorial told me, then I reach the step of "Using the Web Site Administration Tool".
In the Administration Tool, it showed:
-------------------------------------------------
Application:/Authors
Current User Name:RADISHJDESKTOP\RADISHJ
----------------------------------------------------------

After I click the "Security" folder label, it showed:
----------------------------------------------------------
There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.

The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm using SQL Server 2000 as my database. I runed aspnet_regsql.exe and set Windows authentication and <defalt> on Database. aspnet_regsql.exe finished with no problem. I checked the SQL Server, the database "aspnetdb" was created. I added the user "RADISHJDESKTOP\Radishj" into the user list and the permit Database role is public and db_owner.

Now, whatever I do, Administration Tool keep telling me "Unable to connect to SQL Server database".

I tried to reset Provider in the tool. After I click Provider -> Select a single provider for all site management data, there is only one option I can select "AspNetSqlProvider". There is one "Test" link button next to it, after I click it, the message was:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Provider Management
Could not establish a connection to the database.
If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please help me, friends! I have been stuck here for about two days, please.

You need to go back to your SQL Server, open users and add the Windows account "RADISHJDESKTOP\ASPNET" (if it's not already there). Choose properties for the account, check the ASPNETDB Database and add "RADISHJDESKTOP\ASPNET" to the "db_owner" role for the ASPNETDB database.

Thanks for you reply.

I did some modifications according your suggestions. Now, both "RADISHJDESKTOP\ASPNET" and "RADISHJDESKTOP\RADISHJ" are  db_owner of aspnetdb. When I go to Security of Administer Tool, the same error message showed up. :(

Did you enter the correct connection string for the role manager in your web.config file? I was also puzzling for days until I found this page. It might help you also:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnpag2/html/paght000013.asp

Good luck.

Problem solved, thanks to Leonid.
I tried the third step, it worked.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Web Admin Tool assumes that you are have a Sql Server Express instance installed and running at localhost\SQLEXPRESS.  Since you are using your own Sql 2000 database, you need to do some configuration to tell Web Admin Tool to use that instead.

The first step you already did - you ran aspnet_regsql.exe tool.

The second step is to give permissions to the account that your page will use to connect to those databases that were created.  There are several roles that get created, for membership, role manager, etc, and if the account is in that role, it can use those features.  You need to add your Sql account to those roles.  If the account you use is a database admin, then you don't need to do this step.

The third step is to modify connection string so that Web Admin Tool knows to connect to your server, and not SqlExpress.  The easiest way to do that is to open machine.config, and change the "LocalSqlServer" connection string under <connectionStrings> element to your Sql 2000 Server.  This is what is being used by WebAdmin tool.  You can also do this on per app level from the web.config on your website - it's up to you.

Someone on the team pointed me to Scott Guthrie's blog that outlines 1st and 3rd steps above - hopefully this will help:  http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2005/08/25/423703.aspx

Thanks,

Leonid

Hi,

I'm also very new to Visual Web Dev Express 2005.

I have the same problem as radishj, but I'm using SQL Server Express instead of SQL Server 2000 as my database.
When I click Security tab, the message was :

It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.

I tried to Choose Data Source on Provider tab, test connection to AspNetSqlProvider, the connection was established succesfully.

Please anybody help me solve this problem Crying <img src=" src="/emoticons/emotion-9.gif">

Getting "When connecting to SQL Server 2005 Error" using MS SQL 2000?
I'm new to using VS2005 and this is my first project connecting to our MS SQL 2000. App worked fine on my dev PC, connection to the same MS SQL Server. Published the web site to the web server (same server running MS SQL Server) and getting the below error. Is this a permission setup problem on SQL Server or does it really think it's connecting with a MS SQL 2005 database? An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remot...

Am I using VWD Express properly? Problems changing database schema while using "Open Web Site"
Previously I used Frontpage to edit some pages on a local intra-net. It was easy to "Open Web Site" and point it to the server. I didn't have to upload/publish files and I could test forms on the fly.  Since moving to VWD Express, I use the same "File" -> "Open Web Site", and everything works fine for a while. Well I added a database to the website, but later determined that I needed to add another field to a table. So I did that. I created a dataset, and added a datagrid to a page, but when the page loads, it says "Invalid Column Name&quo...

I need to foil using the backbutton to "back into" a "secure" web page
I'm constructing a site which will be "protected" under Forms Authentication. So far, everything works great. The issue I'm trying to overcome now is once a user hits the "Logout" button, which calls FormsAuthentication.Clear() then redirects to my login page, the user can use the back button to go back to the last page of the app they visited, or any others, for that matter. They can't do anything with them except view them or they get bumped to the Login page, but it bugs me that they can even navigate through previously viewed pages! How can I foil this? Thanks! E...
