Change Datagrid cell color based on cell value

I was wondering if there is a way to change the background color of an individual cell in a datagrid based on it's value. (I code in VB)

Example:
I have a Due Date field and the cells need to be highlighted yellow for all dates that are over 30 days old. Then for all of the dates that are over 60 days old, their cell backgrounds would need to be red.
Thanks for the help in advance
Dan

Take a look @ Change Color of a Column Based on Column Values

In your case you can use <Table> tag and change the <td> background color using helper function

I don't really like that solution. What I did was use the ItemDataBound method of the datagrid. This is called every time it writes out a row of the datagrid. Here's my code:

Private Sub DataGrid1_ItemDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.DataGridItemEventArgs) Handles DataGrid1.ItemDataBound
If (e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.Item Or e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.AlternatingItem) Then
Select Case CType(e.Item.Cells(5).Text, Integer)
Case Is >= 28
e.Item.BackColor = Drawing.Color.Red
Case Is >= 21
e.Item.BackColor = Drawing.Color.Orange
End Select
End If
End Sub

That will 'traffic light' the entire row. If you only want to have the cell a different colour, then of course you can do e.Item.Cells(#).BackColor = whatever

benbawden, your way seems to work better, but I can't get it to work.

Here is my code...
..aspx file

.....
<asp:DataGrid
id="DataGrid"
AutoGenerateColumns="False"
runat="server"
GridLines="Both"
OnItemDataBound="PickColor_ItemDataBound"
.....

..vb.aspx file

.....
Protected Sub PickColor_ItemDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As DataGridItemEventArgs) Handles DataGrid.ItemDataBound
If (e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.Item Or e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.AlternatingItem) Then

Select Case CType(e.Item.Cells(11).Text, String)
Case "B"
e.Item.BackColor = Drawing.Color.Red
Case Else
e.Item.Cells(11).BackColor = Drawing.Color.Orange
End Select
End If
End Sub
.....

It doesn't see anything in the cell. It always goes to the Case Else statement. If i put..

Select Case CType(e.Item.Cells(11).Text, String)
Case ""
e.Item.BackColor = Drawing.Color.Red
Case Else
e.Item.Cells(11).BackColor = Drawing.Color.Orange
End Select

Then it will color the whole column red because it doesn't see anything in the cells.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks,
D

I figured it out...

This will work, but only if you used <asp:BoundColumn> in the DataGrid. I was using <asp:TemplateColumn>
Does anyone know why this is and if you can do the same thing with <asp:TemplateColumn>?
Thanks,
D

The concept is more or less the same. Normally, instead of access the value using e.Item.Cells(5).Text, you can use the e.Item.FindControl() to find particular control with the ID given.

Can you post you DataGrid's BoundColumns code here? It is not hard since the concept is almost right.

Hi again. Thanks for the reply. Ok, so here's my itemdatabound Sub. You'll see that i'm trying to use the value in the 8th column. This column is labled "Status" in the database.

Public Sub DataGrid1_ItemDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.DataGridItemEventArgs)
    If e.Item.ItemIndex > -1 Then

        Select Case CType(e.Item.Cells(7).Text, String)

           Case "OPEN"
               e.Item.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Red
           Case "SENT"
               e.Item.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Red
           Case "CLOSED"
               e.Item.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Orange
           Case Else
               e.Item.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.White
        End Select
    End If
End Sub

-------------------

So are you saying i should replace (e.Item.Cells(7).Text, String)
with
 (e.Item.FindControl(7)) , and that should work? i'll give it a go tomorrow, let you know what happens. Thanks.

Public Sub DataGrid1_ItemDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.DataGridItemEventArgs)
    If e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.Item OR e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.AlternatingItem Then

        Select Case e.Item.Cells(7).Text

           Case "SENT"
               e.Item.Cells(7).BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Red

Hi, thanks again, but i've got this message that i've got a million times before, which is why i took it out (not a very good solution to a problem :)) I'm sure this must be an easy fix, but i have no idea how to fix.

Compiler Error Message:

Hi again. OK its still not quite working. I've fixed the ListItemType error, but it still is not seeing anything in the cell. So it will always go to the Else statement and make the cell color white. Any ideas?

My code:

Public Sub DataGrid1_ItemDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.DataGridItemEventArgs)
If e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.Item OR e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.AlternatingItem Then

        Select Case e.Item.Cells(6).Text
           Case ""
               e.Item.Cells(6).BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Red
               'e.Item.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Red
           Case "OPEN"
               e.Item.Cells(6).BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Brown
               'e.Item.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Brown
           Case "Some"
               e.Item.Cells(6).BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Orange
               'e.Item.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Orange
           Case Else
               e.Item.Cells(6).BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.White
               'e.Item.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.White
        End Select
    End If
End Sub

Hi, try to set the breakpoint at the line of select case part, and see what the value of the e.Item.Cells(6).Text. By the way, please post the DataGrid declaration in the HTML (inclusive of the column types).

Hope it helps..

ok, what i did was set the 5th cell equal to the 6th cell value in the Case statement. What happened was all the values in the 5th column were gone. So it is returning an empty cell. So now the question is WHY? because i can see in my datagrid, the cells in the 6th column are populated with text values like OPEN, CLOSED and so on, and all of these cells are colored red.
Anyway, here is my datagrid code, sorry for the lenght of it, and thanks very much for the help!

Try this

Public Sub DataGrid1_ItemDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.DataGridItemEventArgs)
If e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.Item OR e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.AlternatingItem Then

        Dim str as String = CType(e.Item.FindControl("lblStatus"),Label).Text

        Select Case str  ' or replace it with e.Item.DataItem("Status")
           Case ""
               e.Item.Cells(6).BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Red
               'e.Item.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Red
           Case "OPEN"
               e.Item.Cells(6).BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Brown
               'e.Item.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Brown
           Case "Some"
               e.Item.Cells(6).BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Orange
               'e.Item.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.Orange
           Case Else
               e.Item.Cells(6).BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.White
               'e.Item.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.White
        End Select
    End If
End Sub

Hope it helps and works...
