Sending Emails with System.Net.Mail

I am having problems getting my web pages to send emails using System.Net.Mail.  When my efforts failed, I downloaded a simple routine that sends an email to a hardcoded address.  Here is the code:

    Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
        Dim mail As New MailMessage()

        'set the addresses
        mail.From = New MailAddress("Sheldon@SheldonPenner.com")
        mail.To.Add("Sheldon.Penner2@verizon.net")

        'set the content
        mail.Subject = "This is an email"
        mail.Body = "this is the body content of the email."

        'send the message
        Dim smtp As New SmtpClient("localhost")
        Try
            smtp.Send(mail)
            Response.Write("Mail sent.")
        Catch ex As Exception
            Dim ex2 As Exception = ex
            Dim errorMessage As String = String.Empty
            While Not (ex2 Is Nothing)
                errorMessage += ex2.ToString()
                ex2 = ex2.InnerException
            End While

            Response.Write(errorMessage)
        End Try
    End Sub
Nobody that I've shown this to has suggested any errors in the code, however it fails on each of the three servers I have access to.  On my home development computer,
the page runs without an error and displays "Mail sent", but no email is sent or received. The same occurs on the server which will
eventually be our production server. On the testing server, the following error message appears:
System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: Failure sending mail. ---> System.IO.IOException: Unable to read data from the transport connection: net_io_connectionclosed. at

Is there an error in my code? Is there some configuration I need to do? How can I use System.Net.Mail to send emails from my web site?

System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient does not support a Connect or Disconnect method.

I am using three different hosts, including my home installation of VWD Express.  None of these support Web.Net.Mail?!  I have spoken to Customer Support and could find nobody who ever heard of smtp.  I guess I will try System.Web.Mail.  This has been denigrated by Microsoft, but it still works on some servers.

No you have to use your SMTP server.  You do not have one setup locally by default.  Plus the destination (Verizon) in this case would most likely reject the e-mail anyway.  If you do not know your SMTP server check your settings in Outlook to send things from your local machine.  From your actual web server check with your host.

Thanks for your response.  The issue has been resolved.  The problem I was having was caused by the value in my smtp.From.  I was using a false address for testing purposes, not realizing that the From address must be a valid one located in the sending domain.  When I changed the From address to ones actually located on the sending domain, the mail went through!

Hi, I got the same problem. Could you please tell me that how could you set the From address to a valid one located in the sending domain when you are using SmtpClient("localhost")?

My localhost is 127.0.0.1 and it doesn't connect with a domain like gmail or yahoo which has my e-mail accounts in it. What could I do?

Thanks for your help

I checked that website before, but I didn't get the answer.

I set everything like the first post, and after the program run, it returned me "e-mail sent", but I got nothing when I check my e-mail box for the test e-mail.

I have the exact same problem System.web.mail works every time from the same c# project without changing any configuration settings, despite warnings that System.web.mail is obsolete. I have now written a new sendMail method with system.net.mail, which failed with

Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: 5.7.1 Unable to relay...

I have made changes to the smtp server on iis, which I shouldn't have had to. Now it sends the messages but I can see .eml files in C:\Inetpub\mailroot\queue\ going nowhere!

What gives? How do we use System.net.mail the way System.web.mail worked.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks

Mine works now. All mails I sent out to Hotmail or Gmail box will be recongnized as garbage mail, that's why I thought it wasn't out before. So check those garbage boxes, it should be there.

My setting in config file is:

  <system.net>
    <mailSettings>
      <smtp from=" radishj@127.0.0.1">
        <network host="127.0.0.1"
                 port="25"
