There are two ways:

1) use an ActiveX control. The user has to agree to install it. With an ActiveX control,  you can do almost anything.

2) for well-known file extensions such as xls and doc, you can just put a link to the file. When the user clicks on the link, the application will open. The application (Excel, Word, etc.) needs to be installed on the user's computer for this to work.

I believe there is another way to do this with out activex.

If i remember it correctly, in the .net framework environment and windows client can be called via a url for example: http:\\testsite\openwindoesclient.exe. But the settings for this in IIS are bit tricky too. I tried this long tiome ago with activex.

Hi,

As far as I can see, I suggest to use "process" to run the windows application from the web application.

The code is shown below.

.cs file

Process proc = new Process();
proc.StartInfo.FileName = @"D:\sample\abc.exe";
proc.StartInfo.Arguments ="args";
proc.Start();

If the process can't be started, please refer to the following link.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555134/en-us

I look forward to receiving your test result.

Zong-Qing, your code will start a new process on the server, not on the client.
