Port Problem With IIS 7

 Hi All;

I've set up a virtual web folder in IIS 7 for a project.

When I try to start the Web folder (or the application associated with it),
I get the following error message:

"This Web site cannot be started. Another Web site may be using the same port."

If I stop the default web folder ("C:\inetpub\wwwroot"), I can then start the
new virtual web folder.

IOW: I can only have one web folder active at a time.

I am pretty much clueless about IIS 7.

Can anyone give me any idea as to what I need to do to resolve this issue?

THANKS!!

Only one site can use port 80. Multiple sites can use port 80 if you have defined a host header for them.

That is  if you one sites url is test1.local and other is test2.local you can run both on port 80. Only one site can run on port 80 with no host header defined.

Hello Sam;

What should I give for a host name?

I gave it one - as mentioned within Microsoft TechNet - in Site Bindings:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731692.aspx

When I clicked on "Browse", I got a web page with a page load error:
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Address Not Found

Firefox can't find the server at www.ctablesvdir.com.

The browser could not find the host server for the provided address.

    * Did you make a mistake when typing the domain? (e.g. "ww.mozilla.org" instead of "www.mozilla.org")
    * Are you certain this domain address exists?  Its registration may have expired.
    * Are you unable to browse other sites?  Check your network connection and DNS server settings.
    * Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy?  Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Obviously, I'm missing something here.

Thanks!!!

Well I guess the obvious question is does that address resolve to the machine running IIS 7?

The url in ur error message doesn't exist.

Change your configuration to use the host header: testa.local

Now open the following file on the machine you are using your web browser on:

C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Yes it is just called "hosts" there is no extension. Open this file in notepad

Append this line:

172.16.1.20     testa.local

Replace 172.16.1.20 with the ip address of the machine. As you appear to testing this all on an internal network that should be the actual ip address of your web server.

After saving the file try and browse to http://testa.local

(the instructions relating to "hosts" are only relevant for testing the host header functionality. hosts functions, sort of-not really, like a local dns server. A very simple A records only dns server.

If you wish to deploy something on an intranet or internet you will need to add the correct dns information to your internal dns server or register the domain etc etc to get it working for a bunch of computers)

Hi Sam;

I'm still not clear as to what to give it for a host name.

I tried CTablesVDir.local and CTablesVDir.com, which got the
following:
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Not Found

HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

My physical folder is:
I:\Virtual Webfolder\CTables

It is assigned to the web folder:
CTablesVDir

From IIS Manager, I can right_click on Sites > CTablesVDir - then select "explore"
 - and the correct folder opens.

From IPCONFIG /all, I got my IP address.

One question: What happens should I get a different IP address assigned to
the server?

Wouldn't that mess things up with the hosts file?

(Vista didn't like it when I modified the hosts file.)

(Please keep in mind that I know next to nothing about IIS 7,
and IIS 6 wasn't nearly this much trouble to configure.)

Thanks!!!

The same issues exists whether u use IIS6 or 7. However they have very different management programs.

You need to edit the bindings of your website and configure ur website correctly. Virutal directories have no bearing on what you are trying to do, virtual directories can not have bindings defined for them, only the websites. Below is how to edit the bindings:

You then enter the binding like so:

 Your host file is configured to match ur binding:

You then browse to the site:

 This solution only allows for access on the machine that you have configured the entry in the hosts file for. It's therefore only really good for a test scenario. I can provide further advice if you can describe to me exactly how you want to deploy your site to production and what the audience will be (internet users, intranet users etc).

Actually, I'm trying to get everything running on my laptop, which I intend to use for
demonstration purposes.

Client and server are one and the same in this case, although I'll probably need to learn
how to configure for deployment at some point.

Can I take a rain check on that?   Wink

Thanks!!!

[PATCH lib/Net/Config.pm, MANIFEST, t/lib/Mock/Socket.pm, lib/Net/Config.t] Add Tests for Net::Config
Here's a test suite for Net::Config. In the process of writing this, I've fixed an apparent bug that prevented single values from becoming array references when necessary. I think it's right, but perhaps Graham should weigh in on this. In the process, with some advice from perl-qa, I've added a mock object so the test could control the output of Socket::inet_ntoa() and Socket::inet_aton(). t/lib/Mock/ seemed like as good a place as any. I'm happy to rework this patch if it personally offends anyone whose opinion matters. :) -- c --- lib/Net/~Config.pm S...
